How to Lose Weight with Walking

One of the safest forms of exercise is walking. Depending on how much you do walk, you can lose around one pound or more per week. This means that in less than five months, you can become 20 pounds lighter without having to spend too many hours at the gym, and without having to go on a diet. Furthermore, while you shed the pounds and inches from your body, you can also tone your muscles and improve your health. Without a doubt, when you learn how to implement the principles of walking to lose weight into your lifestyle, you will be hooked on this beneficial exercise routine.

How can you lose weight by walking?
The number of calories you can burn while walking is determined by your body weight and your walking pace. So, if you walk at a pace of four miles per hour, you can burn around 400 calories in just an hour. Of course, you need not walk a full four miles every day. You can walk a shorter distance than that, and simply combine the rest of your miles with your daily schedule. You can also use a device called a pedometer to help you burn extra calories and lose pounds while walking and doing your daily schedule.

Using pedometers to boost weight loss
When trying to lose weight through walking, to ensure greater success for your efforts, buy a pedometer, or a waistband that will track your daily activities. A pedometer is a helpful device that you can attach to your clothing near your hip area. It is light-weight and contains a variety of features, the main feature of which counts the number of steps you take during your workout, or throughout the day.

This device will let you know how many miles you need to cover to drop extra pounds and to determine how many you have covered during your walk. Consequently, you will be able to determine how much you need to increase your steps or distance each day, in order to see a difference in the number on the scale.

So, if you currently take 8000 steps with your existing routine and daily habits, maintaining your current weight, then you would need to increase the number of steps you take and your daily distance to lose weight.

How many steps do I need to take to lose weight?
The average person needs to take about 2,000 steps, about one mile, which burns 100 calories. Bear in mind the following mathematics:

1 mile - 2,000 steps, 100 calories burned
1 pound - 3,500 calories
1 pound weight loss per week - 500 calorie deficit per day

To lose 1 pound per week, you would need to add 10,000 steps to your day.

While this may sound like a lot, there are a few ways to incorporate walking into your busy day. And, you need not start with 10,000 steps as your target, rather, build up to 10,000 steps gradually. Here are a few tips to bear in mind:

1. Get off the bus at an earlier stop and walk the rest.

2. Park your car further away from your destination and walk the extra distance.

3. Walk to the station instead of taking the car or the bus.

4. Take the stairs instead of the lift.

5. Walk with your children to school.

Just be sure to invest in a good quality pedometer to ensure that every step you take is counted. The American Medical Association insist that wearing a pedometer is essential to long-term weight control and successful weight loss.

Keep it interesting Sticking to your usual walking route can become mundane, so be sure to switch things around. To do this, try walking outdoors at different parks, or explore different neighborhoods. Take music with you to motivate and energize you to complete your daily walk. If it's cold outside, try not to stop your routine, invest in a treadmill instead and place it in front of a window or television. It may also be a good idea to invite a family member or a friend along, even if they join just once a week. This will help mix things up a bit, and walkers become more dedicated when sharing their routine with others.

Maintain a stable posture
Over the years, bad posture and habits can cause less than desirable walking standards. If you are walking for exercise, it is important to keep your chin up and your gaze focused about 10 feet in front of you. Keep a long stride and pull your abdomen towards your spine. Keep your glutes squeezed as this style of walking will help you achieve maximum benefits from your workout.

How often must you walk to lose weight faster?
Prior to getting started on your walking routine, consult with your physician to ensure that you are healthy and able to participate in the activity. Once you receive your physician's approval, start your routine by walking three days a week for 15 to 20 minutes. Then, you can gradually increase the frequency until you are able to walk 30 to 60 minutes per day, every day of the week, enabling you to lose weight faster. Moderate exercise is one of the best ways to lose weight and is one of the three things you can do to lose 88 pounds in one year, without dieting.

Vital Tips for Cancer Prevention You Should Take Note Of

Cancer, like we well know, is a dreaded disease. It is estimated that every year, on average, almost 10 million people die from cancer. It is easily one of the world's largest health problems that has a major impact on society, too. Now, you must have heard conflicting reports about cancer prevention. Various cancer-prevention studies have surfaced online over the years that often recommend contradictory tips. The thing is, cancer prevention is still evolving and new measures to stop the disease keep emerging.

Our chances of developing cancer are affected by the lifestyle choices we make. A few simple changes in our way of living can go a long way in helping us remain cancer-free. These new guidelines should certainly help in that regard.

Take a look at the new guidelines for cancer prevention

The recommendations from the American Cancer Society focus on increasing physical activity and establishing healthy eating patterns at every age. Let’s take a closer look at some of the important points from their recommendations list.
Adults should engage in 150‐300 minutes of moderate‐intensity physical activity per week. Alternatively, they can indulge in 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week, or a similar combination. It is also vital that one should achieve the upper limit of 300 minutes. They have also recommended that children and adolescents engage in at least 1 hour of moderate or vigorous‐intensity activity each day. Encouraging healthy habits like cycling, walking, and visiting parks is also suggested.
It is advisable to avoid alcohol. Previously, the ACS had proposed limiting daily alcohol consumption to one drink for women and two men. However, now they advise avoiding alcohol completely. The reason for this change is that it has now come to light that alcohol consumption is the third major cancer risk factor after tobacco use and obesity. If you cannot avoid drinking alcohol, then you must limit it. Ideally, one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men is the upper limit.

Follow a healthy eating pattern at all ages. For this, the ACS proposes consuming foods that are high in nutrients in quantities that can help you maintain healthy body weight. Taking colorful vegetables and fiber-rich legumes (such as beans and peas), whole fruits with a variety of colors, and whole grains can be extremely beneficial in this regard. The ACS also suggests removing the following foods completely:

  • Red and processed meats
  • Sugar-sweetened beverages
  • Highly processed foods
  • Industrially produced grain‐based desserts
  • Ready‐to‐eat or ready‐to‐heat foods
  • Snack foods, candy, and refined grain products.
Sedentary behavior must be limited. This includes sitting, lying down, and watching television, and other forms of screen‐based entertainment for extended hours.
According to the ACS, the guidelines reflect the current science that dietary patterns instead of specific foods are essential to reduce the risk of cancer while also improving one’s overall health.
“There is no one food or even food group that is adequate to achieve a significant reduction in cancer risk,” said Laura Makaroff, DO, the American Cancer Society’s senior vice president of prevention and early detection in a press release. “Current and evolving scientific evidence support a shift away from a nutrient-centric approach to a more holistic concept of dietary patterns.”

Why proper nutrition is so important in preventing cancer

Since the new guidelines have come up, many people have become a little confused particularly about the points regarding healthy eating patterns. Many want to know what they should give up in their diet now.

Leading dieticians say that people must carefully consider what these guidelines mean. Because even the small shifts we make in our eating patterns and how we work towards them can go a long way in improving our health. Also, bear in mind that many of these suggestions have remained quite similar for some time now. They have just been presented in a different and more relevant way.
For instance, the recommendation to limit red and processed meats is not new or specific to a diet pattern for cancer prevention. Thus, you must remember that reducing red and processed meats and following a plant-based diet doesn’t mean that you have to be a vegetarian to see its benefits.
“Reducing meat is the message we often hear, but don’t forget that means you will need to replace the meat in your diet with nutrient-rich plant-based foods, which we know come with their own health benefits,” says Caroline West Passerrello, MS, RDN, LDN, a registered dietician nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Emerging evidence also points to the fact that healthy dietary patterns are associated with a reduced risk for cancer. Vital anti-cancer micronutrients include:
  • Calcium
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin K2
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin C
  • B vitamins.
Also, as mentioned above, vegetables and fiber-rich legumes along with whole fruits can play an important part, too. Obesity is a major risk factor for cancer as well. Experts say that almost 20% of cancers could be avoided by reducing obesity. Thus, eating should be based on our needs and can help us reduce waste. Moreover, it encourages a healthy connection of our minds to our health needs and allows us to lead a more relaxed lifestyle.

Let’s take meaningful steps towards leading a healthy way of life

Reducing cancer rates will not be easy, of course. It will require a collective and consistent effort by the healthcare system, media, corporations, and others, to change the behavior of the society. However, following the guidelines recommended by the American Cancer Society will certainly help. Our first goal should be to reduce the obesity epidemic from everywhere around us, focus on getting more physical activity into our lives along with no smoking and eating right. If all of us pledge to incorporate these points judiciously into our life, then we can definitely make a difference in bringing down the cancer rates.
Remember that many cancers are preventable. This increases the significance of exercise, nutrition, and the need for community involvement. The suggestion made for 300 minutes of exercise per week is based on scientific studies that indicate that exercise can reduce the risk of cancer. It can either be done through weight loss and an improvement in lifestyle or by directly stimulating anticancer molecules in the body.

Now, more than ever, it is time to take meaningful steps towards changing our way of life for our own betterment. Let’s encourage healthy habits in our respective communities and inculcate a lifestyle that is not prone to the risks of cancer.

Here’s a Simple Guide on How to Do Walking Meditation

Stress and anxiety have escalated everywhere right now owing to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. One of the many suggestions made by mental health professionals is to practice walking meditation in this phase to calm your mind. Walking meditation, also known as mindful walking, is a form of meditation in action.

Many of you might be aware of the benefits of meditation but not everyone feels comfortable sitting in the same position for a long time. In walking meditation, you use the experience of walking as your primary focus. It helps you be aware of your mind and body and allows you to be mindful of all your thoughts, emotions, and sensations. This practice, if done properly, can turn into a tool for mindfulness and stress reduction. Now that you know the importance of mindful walking, you would surely like to know exactly how to follow the practice. Here, we help you understand how to do walking meditation through simple yet effective steps.

1. Find a place to walk
One of the cool advantages of walking meditation is that it can be done inside or outside if the area is relatively quiet. It can be the verandah inside your house or the little park outside your place. However, it would better if you avoid steep hills or places where you would be forced to stop regularly. Generally, a lane that allows you to walk back and forth for 10-15 paces without being disturbed would be ideal. Also, the lane doesn’t need to be very long as you don’t have to reach a specific destination through walking meditation.
Now, before you begin walking, do some basic stretches to loosen your body. Your spine should be straight and you should have a good posture before you start. Another good tip is that initially, you should try meditation walking indoors as there would be fewer distractions.
2. Start walking
Once you’ve chosen your spot, you can begin walking. To practice walking meditation properly, first, take 10-15 steps along the lane you’ve chosen while breathing normally. Walk slowly and take small steps. After you have finished your steps, pause, and breathe again. Don’t be in a rush and always take your time. Once you feel comfortable and have finished breathing, take another 10-15 steps in the opposite direction. Continue this process for at least 15 minutes.
If you are not comfortable going back and forth, however, you can also meditate by walking in a straight path. It is crucial to remember here that you are not aiming for a good workout through this routine but are trying to connect to your body and mind.
3. Connect your breathing with your steps
One of the main goals of walking meditation is to create unity between your body and your mind. You can achieve this by following a few instructions regularly. Firstly, breathe in as you take two or three steps. Then, you have to breathe out and take three, four, or five steps. To keep the cycle going, you should alter the number of steps you take with each breath. However, make sure that you don’t stress yourself in doing so. There's shouldn't be any rush. Find what is comfortable for your body and mind.
Remember that it may take you a while to find your rhythm and the pattern that you find convenient. However, your breathing should be slow and relaxed no matter what pattern you adopt.

4. Awareness of your body
A vital part of walking meditation is to be aware of each part of your body. As you are walking, you should notice how your feet feel when they are touching the ground. Also, take note of how your muscles contract as you take each step and the myriad sensations you feel in each part of your body. Even small things like the changing position of your hip as you lift your leg to take a step or how your arms and shoulders swing as you walk should be observed and felt.
You don’t have to think about these body movements, though. You just need to notice and feel the different sensations in your body as you move. This will allow you to connect with it on a deeper level.
5. Awareness of your feelings
Meditation walking also involves being aware of your feelings. When you are walking, notice if there are things that feel pleasant or unpleasant in your body, or outside of you. There are bound to be a few, surely. When you do notice things that are unpleasant in your body, don’t cling onto them but don’t push them away either. Just take note of them. If there are unpleasant things in the outside world that you notice, allow them to drift by. Don’t follow them or change your gaze for those things.
Keep reminding yourself as you walk that there are no right or wrong feelings. You needn’t fight your sentiments. Instead, accept whatever you feel and let it be a part of your meditation walking experience.
6. Take note of your thoughts and emotions
When you are mediation walking you will experience a range of emotions, too. Your emotions will be affected by what is currently happening in your life. It may be some happiness over a new job or sadness over some other issue. You might also be irritated or anxious about something in your life. Whatever emotions you might be feeling at that point, just observe them and don’t let yourself cling on to them. Allow your thoughts to flow naturally.
Also, notice your mind during this process. Is your mind at peace or are you thinking about things unconnected with this practice? Whether you are experiencing negative or positive thoughts, just notice them without any judgment and focus on your walking.

7. Honing your ability to focus
One of the most difficult things to attain in walking meditation is to be aware of your body, feelings, and emotions. This might feel daunting initially and hence it would be better if you break it down and make it simpler. Start by focusing only on your body at first. Give it time and don’t feel agitated if the focus doesn’t come easily in the beginning. It will take time so you need to keep at it. Once you have become a little comfortable on focusing on your body, you can switch to being aware of your feelings and thoughts. This, too, will take time. The more you practice, the better you will get.
Once you have gotten the hang of it, you can modify your focus based on your needs. For instance, you may want to become more aware of your feelings at a certain point and don’t want to be aware of your body or thoughts. Walking meditation allows you to do that once you practice it regularly and integrate it into your daily life. Over time, with the help of this technique, you will feel that your ability to focus, despite the distractions, keeps improving.
8. Allow yourself to live in the moment
The primary idea behind walking meditation is to allow yourself to live in the moment. You don’t have to reach any destination as you should only focus on the journey of this unique exercise. Live in the moment and forget the past. While you are walking, your mind may wander. Let it do so without feeling anxious. Observe those thoughts and let your mind come back to the present moment, to the present breath, whenever it feels comfortable.
Let yourself be free as you walk and don’t worry about any goal. You will feel light and relaxed with time. As you make this into a habit you will start to learn how to live in the present moment rather than always being worried about the future.
