Want to prevent silverfish from invading your house? Do so with these tips prevent silverfish house

And you definitely have to do this if you already have them at home

Silverfish are uninvited guests in many households. These slippery creatures move at lightning speed, and they are very difficult to get rid of once they invade.
Preventing the silverfish from moving into your home is easier than treating once they’ve entered.
Allergy

Silverfish can cause an allergic reaction with symptoms that are similar to asthma. Think of stuffiness, watery eyes and a runny nose. They are also carriers of bacteria. All sorts of bacteria are attached to the legs of silverfish and paperfish, and you obviously don’t want that in your house.
Silverfish

Silverfish love a moist environment and penetrate your house through cracks and holes. They often hide in the walls of your house, between them and the insulation. It is nice, warm and humid there. Because silverfish thrive best in a humid climate, do everything you can to avoid moisture in the house. Read on the following page how you can best prevent them.

Meeting place

You may often find silverfish on the floor of your bathroom because it is nice and humid there. You may also find them in the bathtub. The critters can’t walk well on slippery surfaces, so when they try to climb into or out of the bathtub they often slide down.

Prevention is better than a cure, so it is best to ensure that you do not create a pleasant environment for these dirty insects. They like to live under our laminate and parquet floors and only come out at night.

Do this to prevent silverfish:

Make sure you avoid moisture as much as possible by ventilating damp rooms and letting clothes dry well before putting them away. If you have a very damp house, use a moisture regulator.

Make sure you keep the temperature around 22 degrees. Silverfish are fond of warm places.

Discard old paper, and do not leave it exposed for too long. If you do not want to throw it away, store it in sealed containers.

Store potatoes and fruit well, too. These two things are extremely attractive to these fish.

Potato

Has the damage already happened? Then try the following trick: halve a potato and put it in an open plastic bag. Silverfish are fond of starch, so they will flock here in droves. If you have caught a few bugs, close the plastic bag and throw it away.

Simple test to find the purity of turmeric !

Turmeric is such a common and powerful ingredient with so many medicinal properties, that we use it blindly thinking that all that is sold with good brand names should be pure, wish it was so ! Very often scrupulous traders, adulterate most of the products to earn that extra money at the cost of our health. So, for at least now, to test the purity of turmeric, few simple tests will tell you and it can be done by you in your own kitchen !

Turmeric often tends to have unwanted additives such as chalk powder or starch or sawdust and sometimes, it is made to look appealing with the help of synthetic colors. Adulteration in spices is a common situation in many countries and therefore, it pays to ensure that the turmeric you buy and eat is free from Metanil yellow or lead chromate which are some of the toxic chemicals.
Simple tricks that can help you check-

Chalk powder: You can take a pinch of turmeric powder in a glass flask and add a few drops of water to it. Now add a few drops of hydrochloric acid, and if you see it to give off bubbles, it is indicative of the presence of yellow soap powder or chalk powder or both.

Metanil yellow: A few drops of hydrochloric acid in a pinch of turmeric will also help you understand whether it has Metanil yellow. Add some water and shake the mixture as vigorously as you can. If you see the mixture to turn pink, then rest assured that it contains this unwanted additive.

Adulterated turmeric root: Sometimes, we need turmeric root instead of the powder, and you will be surprised to know that it may also be coated with some unwanted substance. To test for it, you will have to place turmeric root on a piece of paper and pour some water on it. If you see it leaving color, it can be impure and polished to give the desired look.

Simple water test: This is one of the easiest ways to find out if there is any adulteration. You will have to take some warm water in a glass and pour in little quantity of turmeric on the surface. Do not stir or mix it and leave it for around 20 to 30 minutes. If all the turmeric powder settles at the bottom of the glass and the water is crystal clear, then the turmeric is pure. If you find the water to turn cloudy, then change to another brand with the hope that it is pure, again test it !

3 Simple tests to find out how safe is the milk you consume

Test 1
put a drop of milk on a slanting surface- pure milk slows slowly with a white trail, while adulterated milk with water flows faster without a mark

Test 2
detergents in milk

in 2 bottles pour pure and adulterated milk and equal amount of water, close the bottles and shake both vigorously for some time, then pour in 2  glasses- pure milk forms a thin layer of foam, while adulterated with detergent forms dense lather.

Test 3
Starch in milk

take some boiled milk with equal amount of water in 2 glasses, add a few drops of tincture of iodine in both, if the milk is pure, colour doesn't change, even when you stir it, but the adulterated one turns blue indicating the presence of starch !

The Importance of the Glycemic Index

You might have heard the words “glycemic index” being thrown around, but wasn’t sure what the whole thing was about. The glycemic index (GI) is a number that is associated with different foods and shows what their effect on the glucose levels in the blood (also known as “blood sugar”). The number represents the total rise in glucose level after eating that food.
How the GI is determined:
The level of “sweetness” of a food doesn’t necessarily make it low/high glycemic - Foods with simple carbohydrates break down faster in the stomach, releasing glucose into the blood more rapidly and therefor have a higher GI value. Foods with complex carbohydrates, which break down slower, will have a lower GI value.
Other factors that affect GI levels:
Dietary fiber, fat, protein, vinegar and amylose starch will lower the GI levels in food. Research shows that consuming a small amount of alcohol shortly before a meal will reduce the GI level of the meal by 15%.
GI classification:
Classification GI range Examples
Low GI 55 or less beans (white, black, pink, kidney, lentil, soy, almond, peanut, walnut, chickpea); small seeds (sunflower, flax, pumpkin, poppy, sesame); most whole intact grains (durum/spelt/kamut wheat, millet, oat, rye, rice, barley); most vegetables, most sweet fruits (peaches, strawberries, mangos); fructose; mushrooms; chilis
Medium GI 56-69 not intact whole wheat or enriched wheat, pita bread, basmati rice, unpeeled boiled potato, grape juice, raisins, prunes, pumpernickel bread, cranberry juice, regular ice cream, sucrose, banana
High GI 70 or higher white bread (only wheat endosperm), most white rice (only rice endosperm), corn flakes, extruded breakfast cereals, glucose, maltose, maltodextrins, potato, pretzels, bagels
Source: Wikipedia.org
Why do we need to know the GI of food?
Diabetics need to know what their glucose levels are, as changes in these levels can have serious effects on their physical and mental state and may even be detrimental to their health. Non-diabetics can use the GI to better regulate their energy levels and improve results when working out. Some people with a thyroid condition need to control their blood glucose levels in order to lose or maintain weight.
High glycemic foods break down fast, providing a quick energy boost, especially after a workout. Low glycemic foods take more time to break down, making them a great fuel before a workout, as they release energy into the body steadily. These factors can help you prevent hypoglycemia symptoms.
A 1999 research discovered that people who follow a low GI diet over a prolonged period of time reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes and even age-related muscular degeneration.
Things to be aware of:
The GI index is not perfect – there are many foods that are low-glycemic which are unhealthy (Chocolate cake – GI 31, ice cream – GI 37) and ones that are high-glycemic that are good for you (Potato/rice – 100 GI). Remember to practice moderation.
The amount of carbohydrates in food can have more of an impact than GI on the glucose levels in your blood. Losing weight and consuming less carbs will also lower blood glucose levels.
