The best at-home blackhead treatments, according to dermatologists

Dermatologists weigh in on the efficacy of at-home blackhead treatments, including pore strips, cleansers and serums.

If you have acne-prone skin, you're probably familiar with those pesky dark spots on the forehead, nose or chin, commonly known as blackheads. Though it may be tempting to pop and pick at them when they show up, that only makes the problem worse, experts say.

With so many cleansers and exfoliants on the market, it can become difficult to narrow down the ones that actually decongest your pores and minimize the appearance of enlarged ones. We spoke to board-certified dermatologists about the best blackhead-fighting ingredients, how to safely and effectively remove blackheads at home and which over-the-counter products they suggest.

What are blackheads?

Blackheads, also known as open comedones, start as sebum plugs, which are collections of oily liquid that help the skin stay lubricated. They clog up pores when they mix with bacteria and dead skin cells, according to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Deborah Spey. Blackheads turn black when exposed to air and oxidize, hence their name. These clogged pores are commonly found on the nose, forehead, chin, back and chest since they are sebum rich areas, says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Arash Akhavan.

How we picked the best blackhead treatments

Dermatologists recommend focusing on preventing future breakouts and decongesting current blackheads with the following ingredients:

  • Retinoids: These help regulate cell turnover and prevent the pores from becoming congested, says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Karen Burke. Topical retinoids work on all types of acne but are especially helpful for blackheads and whiteheads, she says.
  • Salicylic acid: A type of beta hydroxy acid (BHA), salicylic acid penetrates pores to help dissolve oil, unclog pores and prevent buildup of dead skin, oil and other debris, says Spey.
  • Benzoyl peroxide: This is an antioxidant, so it kills bacteria and stops the lipid, the protective layer of cells, from oxidizing, according to Burke. Cleansers that combine both benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are very effective at treating blackheads, says Burke.
  • Lactic acid: Lactic acid is an exfoliant that helps break up dead skin cells and unclog pores, says Spey.
  • Charcoal: Charcoal doesn’t prevent future blackheads, but it does offer some immediate benefits like drawing out impurities such as oil, debris and dirt from your pores, which helps minimize their appearance, according to Spey.

Signs and Treatment of Combination Skin

Most of us have dry or oily facial skin that can be treated simply and quickly, but when the two are combined, treatment may be a bit more complicated. Most creams provide excessive moisture, facial masks absorb too much oil and the serums that are supposed to bring balance to our skin, don’t. Many people suffer from these and other problems with combination skin which is why it's important to know how to take care of it. We invite you to read on and check whether you also suffer from this skin type, what the reason for it is, and how it can be dealt with best with a few simple tips.

The 7 signs of combination skin

1. About twenty minutes after you wash your face, you notice oiliness in different areas of your face alongside clean areas.
 skin
2. When you use a moisturizer meant for normal skin, it makes your cheeks feel good, but your T-zone (forehead, nose, chin, and around your mouth) becomes very greasy.

3. The pores on your nose are larger than the pores on your cheeks and jaw.
4. You suffer from dandruff.
5. You suffer from acne and dry patches at the same time.
6. The state of your T zone changes depending on the weather.
7. You suffer from flakiness in your T-zone.

What is the reason behind combination skin?

There are a variety of factors that can contribute to the development of combination skin, but in most cases, it is simply about luck and the genes you inherited from your parents. However, one of the main reasons is the use of products that aren’t suitable for facial skin which can cause dryness in different areas, and oiliness in others (especially around the nose). If you use such products, you are actually causing the development of combination facial skin. It is important to know how to adapt the right treatment and product to your personal skin type, because once you use the right products - such as those we’ll recommend later in this article - your facial skin will improve immediately, becoming balanced once more.

5 tips for dealing with combined skin

It is important to note that combination skin care should be personally tailored according to the dry and oily areas of the face. In fact, taking care of this skin type comes down to one important rule - you must treat each of the different areas of your face separately. Oil-absorbing ingredients in some of the products will work great for oily areas but can damage dry areas, just as moisturizers will work great on the dry areas, but will also cause oily areas to stay that way. Therefore, when treating the different areas of your face, you should pay personal attention to each area and use the correct products. In addition, here are five tips for dealing with combination skin:
1. Start using gentle and effective water-soluble cleansing products - these products can be cream or gel-based, with the main goal of effectively removing impurities and makeup without leaving the skin dry or oily. If you need extra cleansing, consider using a soft-bristled cleaning brush - softness is very important because anything else will irritate your skin.
2. Use a soothing and hydrating cleanser - Many facial cleansers have enough skin rejuvenating ingredients and antioxidants. The good-quality cleanser can help moisturize dry parts and minimize oily grease in other areas - so you can use the same product for your whole face without drying out or over moisturizing the different areas of your face.
3. Use gentle salicylic acid-based peels - this is the perfect choice for a gentle peeling treatment for combined skin. Salicylic acid helps to shed dead skin properly without being overly abrasive. These peels shrink pores, reduce oily skin, and smooth rough dry and sensitive patches. The acid penetrates the pores and cleans them while helping to balance the amounts of oil they secrete.

4. Protect your skin from sun damage - no matter what type of skin you have, sunscreen should be applied every day of the year, especially if you have combination skin; This is one step that will help you reduce the early signs of aging, along with protecting your skin. It is recommended that you use a mild sunscreen on the face and apply it to the neck as well - note that before use, you apply a hydrating serum to the dry areas. 5. Moisturize before bedtime – moisturizers contain amazing ingredients such as antioxidants and skin rejuvenation ingredients that are essential to soothing the skin, reducing excess oil, and moisturizing dry areas, including around the eyes. When these ingredients are combined together they have amazing anti-aging effects on the skin.

Home-made combination skin facial mask

Along with the familiar products on the market and those that can be prepared at home to treat your skin, there is one face mask designed for combination skin that you should know and learn how to prepare. For this mask, you’ll need only two ingredients: pro-biotic yogurt and egg whites. Both of these ingredients have many benefits which have an excellent effect on combination skin; Yogurt is a rich food that helps nourish and soften the skin, while also fighting acne and bacteria found in the pores and skin, and helps hydrate dry patches; Egg whites help tighten large skin pores, sagging skin, and are excellent for dealing with oily skin.
How to
Mix one tablespoon of yogurt and one tablespoon of egg white in a small bowl, apply the mask that you created on your face, taking care not to rub the area of the eyes and mouth, and let sit 10-15 minutes. Then, when the face mask has dried completely, rinse with warm water and then cold water to close the pores, and wipe with a soft dry towel. Please note that you use regular, unsweetened, pro-biotic yogurt to prevent skin irritations and allergies. In addition, the face mask should be applied over a sink to prevent making a mess on the floor.

Large Pores- What One Can Do

Women go to great lengths to hide their large pores. They look for the right makeup primer, foundation, powder, matte products, they look in the mirror every hour, wash the makeup off in the evenings and repeat this all again the next day! Aside from using makeup, they also use scrubs and masks. But in order to solve the issue of large pores on your skin, you need to choose an integrated approach.

What causes large pores and what to do with them
Skin pores produce an oil-like substance called sebum which keeps the skin moisturized and saturated with oxygen. It also helps absorb healthy ingredients from cosmetics. But if the skin produces too much sebum and doesn't get the right care, pores become dirty and enlarged which may cause acne.

Large pores come about due to a number of reasons. Excess production of sebum is one, which may be caused by bad food, stress, sunlight exposure without sunscreen, the wrong type of skincare or comedogenic cosmetics. A decrease in elasticity is another possible cause. With age, the production of collagen is slowed down, the skin becomes less elastic and the pores look bigger.
Take care when out in the sun as damage due to sunlight exposure can also lead to the destruction of collagen. Genes may also be a cause. In fact, scientists found out that the pores of Asian women do not change much with age, while the pores of Indian women become bigger. And while you cannot change your genes, you can change your approach to skincare and food, ensuring that your skin looks better. So, what more can you do to protect your skin:
1. Reconsider your diet
Firstly, decrease the production of sebum. You should also reconsider your diet, your skincare procedures and the ingredients of your cosmetics. Be sure to protect your skin from collagen destruction by using sunscreen every day and stop the pores from becoming bigger by moisturizing them regularly, using non-comedogenic cosmetics. This approach won't change your skin type but it will help to make your pores smaller and clearer. If you notice your skin becoming oily after just one hour after morning care, maybe it's because your skin produces too much sebum.
What you can do:
1. Decrease the number of carbs you eat: Foods that have a high glycemic index, such as sugar, white bread, and white rice can make the skin produce more sebum. Consequently, pores get blocked and this may lead to acne.
2. Add herbs and spices to your food: Opt for cinnamon, oregano, cloves, ginger, and garlic. All this prevents the processes that lead to aging of the skin and the decrease in elasticity.
3. Drink green tea: It contains polyphenols that decrease the production of sebum, helping to reduce acne.
4. Eat more fish and vegetables: These foods decrease the probability of acne.
2. Clearing and moisturizing
If your skin is prone to large pores it should be moisturized and cleaned twice a day. The remains of cosmetics, dead skin cells and dirt block the pores, leading to a breakout.
What you can do:
1. Use peels that contain salicylic acid (up to 1%) or glycolic or lactic acid (2-5%) as they stimulate the regeneration of cells, helping to keep pores clear.
2. Don't use scrubs as they contain abrasive particles that can damage the skin and cause inflammation which can lead to enlargement of pores.
3. Use gels to clear your face as they are better for oily skin than lotions are.
4. Don't wash your face with regular soap. The acidity of soap is 8 to 10 on the pH scale so it can destroy the protective layer of the skin, which will lead to an increase in sebum production. Use products with a pH no higher than 5.5.
5. Wash your face sometime between noon and 4 pm. At this time of day, the skin produces sebum very actively which is why we notice an oily shine in the middle of the day.
6. Use sunscreen as if you don't, the UV-light will destroy the collagen in your skin making it less elastic.
7. Use a water-based cream or gel as they moisturize the skin without blocking the pores.
3. Choose safe cosmetics
Cosmetics are comedogenic if they contain ingredients that can block pores like wax, oils, talcum and other similar components. Skin with enlarged pores requires cosmetics that decrease the production of sebum. Look out for useful components in cosmetics like Nordihyroguaiaretic acid, NDGA, and sarcosine, which reduce the production of sebum. Furthermore, it's better if you do not buy cosmetics that contain:
1. Talcum as it clocks pores. You're better off using mineral based products.
2. Alcohol dries out the skin and disrupts the natural process of removing dead skin cells.
3. Mineral oil is a cheap, easy comedogenic component of many cosmetic products.

12 Home Methods to Remove Warts!

A wart is a small, rough growth resembling a cauliflower or a solid blister. It typically occurs on human’s hands or feet, but often in other locations. They are caused by a viral infection, specifically by one of the many types of human papillomavirus (HPV). There are as many as 10 varieties of warts, the most common considered to be mostly harmless. Worse than anything, they make us feel embarrassed and unattractive.

Use one of these easy methods to remove the invader from your body:

Salicylic acid - can be bought in pharmacies both as an ointment and as soaked pads. The advantage of Salicylic acid is that it works well. Its disadvantage is that it requires daily use to work and it may take months to see the effect. In order to make it more efficient, you can gently scrape the wart with a nail file before putting it on. In any case, consult a physician.

Adhesive tape - This may sound weird, but adhesive paper tape, wrapped tightly around the wart and replaced every day, will work. Just don't make it too tight so you don't stop the flow of blood.

Garlic - A number of studies have made the recommendation of rubbing some garlic on the wart every night and even bandage it with it. Apparently the natural anti-inflammatory and anti-viral materials help to fight the skin infection.

Freezing and needle work - Put ice on your wart and sterilize a needle. After the area of the wart feels frozen, prick it a few times from a few different directions and points. Be sure to get through all the skin layers, but maintain a steady pressure, as not to injure yourselves. This action, violent as it seems, will help introduce the blood flow to the infection and will better enable the immune system to locate and destroy the wart. This is especially helpful in cases of multiple warts, as the immune system will get wise to all of them.

Soda with Castor oil - Mix soda with castor oil to create an ointment. Smear the ointment on the wart and bandage it for the night. The acid in the Castor oil will irritate the wart and help it heal. Remove the bandage in the morning and repeat the action for a few days until the wart is gone.

Hot water - Soaking warts in hot water can help the healing. The hot water softens the wart and can kill the virus. Keep the water below 60C (140f) so you don't burn yourselves. Salt water or adding sea salt to the water is recommended, to dry the wart out.

Vitamin C and E Bandages - Crunch a pill of vitamin C, mash it to dust and mix with a little water to create an ointment. Smear it on the wart and bandage. You can do the same with Vitamin E. Remove at night to let the area breath.  Repeat 3 times a day.

Citrus fruit peels - Slice a bit of a lemon peel. The piece should be a bit larger than the wart. Press the peel to the wart with medical glue.

Basil - Crush some fresh basil and bandage it directly on the wart. Repeat the action daily for a week. The anti-viral materials in the basil leaves will help kill the virus.

Toothpaste - Smear some toothpaste on the wart and bandage it. Stay with the bandage for a whole day and repeat the action until the wart disappears.

Tea Tree Oil - There are many uses for the materials in tea leaves, and so goes with warts. The oil is a concentrated essence of all these materials and smearing it on the wart will help. Smear the wart with the oil and bandage. Do this daily for 3 weeks.

Carrot and olive oil - Scrape a carrot as thin as possible and add some olive oil to create an ointment. Smear on the wart and leave for half an hour. Repeat the treatment twice a day for 2-3 weeks.
