This popular painkiller may be causing you more harm than good— new study reveals heart-linked risks

New research suggests that popular and widely prescribed painkiller tramadol may not be as effective or harmless as you may think. An analysis of the available research claimed that tramadol is not that effective at easing chronic pain and likely increases the risk of serious side effects.

The analysis prompted the researchers to conclude that "the potential harms of tramadol probably outweigh its benefits". It also suggested that tramadol's use should be minimised.

The study was published in the BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine in October 2025.

What is Tramadol?

Tramadol, often seen as a " safer painkiller", is a dual-action opioid widely prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe acute and chronic pain (after an operation or a serious injury). It is a strong painkiller from a group of medicines called opiates, or narcotics, according to the National Health Service (NHS) UK.

Tramadol is sold under brand names such as Maxitram, Marol, Zydol, Zamadol, Tramulief and Tramquel. It is also called by the brand names Invodol, Larapam, Mabron, Maneo, Oldaram, Tilodol, Tradorec and Zeridame.

It is available only by prescription and comes in tablet, capsule, and liquid drop forms. It can also be given by injection, but this is usually only done in hospitals.

Even NHS UK claims that tramadol does not stop the pain completely, “but you will not be able to feel it as much”.

Is tramadol addictive?

The NHS UK says it's possible to become addicted to tramadol. But doctors can explain how to reduce those risks.

“Approximately 60 million individuals worldwide experience the addictive effects of opioids. In 2019, drug use was responsible for approximately 600,000 deaths, with nearly 80% of these fatalities associated with opioids and approximately 25% resulting from opioid overdose," researchers said.

Why study tramadol?

Tramadol became one of the most commonly prescribed opioids in the US, possibly because of its perceived lower risk of side effects.

It's also believed that tramadol is "safer and less addictive than other short-acting opioids," researchers said, as per the official press release by the BMJ Group.

They also pointed to the lack of a comprehensive assessment of tramadol’s efficacy and safety in a range of chronic pain conditions.

To bridge this knowledge gap, the researchers analysed research databases for randomised clinical trials published up to February 2025 that compared tramadol with placebo (dummy treatment) for patients with chronic pain, including cancer pain.

The researchers concluded: “Tramadol may have a slight effect on reducing chronic pain [low certainty of evidence] while likely increasing the risk of both serious [moderate certainty of evidence] and non-serious adverse events [very low certainty of evidence]."

"The potential harms associated with tramadol use for pain management likely outweigh its limited benefits,” they said.

What did the BMJ study show? The side effects

The large analysis of clinical trials found that while tramadol does reduce chronic pain, the relief is modest, so negligible that many patients likely wouldn’t notice much real-world benefit.

Data analysis of the trial results by researchers showed that while tramadol eased pain, the effect was small and below what would be considered “clinically effective”.

The study also revealed a likely increase in the risk of serious side effects, including heart problems such as chest pain and heart failure, along with common issues such as nausea, dizziness, and sleepiness.

Statistical analysis of some trials indicated a "doubling in the risk of harms associated with tramadol...mainly driven by a higher proportion of ' cardiac events,’ such as chest pain, coronary artery disease, and congestive heart failure," the press release stated.

It further suggested that the use of tramadol was associated with a heightened risk of some cancers, “although the follow-up period was short, making this finding 'questionable”, the researchers said.

Tramadol treatment was also associated with a heightened risk of several milder side effects, including nausea, dizziness, constipation, and sleepiness, as revealed following the detailed analysis of all the trial results.

Another study in the BMJ had earlier advised federal governing bodies to consider reclassifying tramadol, and providers should use as much caution when prescribing tramadol in the setting of acute pain as for other short-acting opioids.

‘High risk of bias’ and study limits

The official statement by the BMJ group mentioned that the researchers acknowledged the high risk of bias in the outcome results.

"But this increases the likelihood that the findings overestimate the beneficial effects and underestimate the harmful effects of tramadol," they suggested.

Study methodology

As many as 19 clinical trials involving 6,506 participants with chronic pain were eligible for inclusion in the analysis.

Five looked at the impact of tramadol on neuropathic pain; nine focused on osteoarthritis; four looked at chronic low back pain; and one focused on fibromyalgia.

The average age of the trial participants was 58, but ranged from 47 to 69.

Tablets were the primary formulation used; only one trial included a topical cream. Length of treatment ranged from 2 to 16 weeks, while length of follow-up ranged from 3 to 15 weeks.

Benefits Of Music

I'm sure that all of you must have heard that there are so many therapies used to treat patients now. Well, music is one of them. I'm sure that everyone loves music, it could be classical, jazz, film music, folk music and so on.

1) Favorite tunes keep you calm- Listening to their favorite music lowered anxiety among ICU patients by about one third, according to a study. Not just any tunes—it had to be familiar and comforting pieces, according to researchers.

2) Mood music makes you eat less- It is known that when people hear soothing music to their ears, they eat less and feel happy. This has been noted by many eateries that playing soft, soothing music, make their customers happy, so they eat less !

3) Inspiring instrumentals improve your mental focus-  When young adults were given a task that required intense concentration, they did better while listening to the bright “Spring” concerto versus the slower and more somber “Autumn” one.

4) Good music soothes and relaxes your blood vessels-   Listening to music that brings you joy causes blood vessels to expand, increasing blood flow and improving cardiovascular health, a study found. The average upper-arm blood vessel diameter of people in the study increased 26 percent after listening to joyful music. A separate review of 26 studies covering almost 1,400 heart disease patients found that music
reduced heart rate, blood pressure, and anxiety.

5) Children who listen to music are more helpful- Preschoolers who sang and played instruments as a group were a whopping 30 times more likely to help others in subsequent tasks that measured their helpfulness and problem-solving abilities, compared with a control group of kids who listened to a story, researchers reported in 2013.

6) Help teens cope with cancer-  Teenagers undergoing cancer treatment who joined a music therapy program in the hospital showed improved coping skills and more resilience when compared to a control group of patients who received audio books. The patients, who were undergoing stem cell transplants, worked with music therapists to write song lyrics and produce videos. “Making music videos allows these patients to project their feelings through another outlet,”

7) Your work will get done faster- Listening to happy music at
work can help you complete
tasks more quickly, especially if you’re doing something repetitive such as checking e-mail or filing documents. One study showed that the accuracy and efficiency of surgeons improved when they worked with the music of their choice in the background.

8)Stress levels will go down-   Music decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol just
as well as massage therapy does,
according to a small 2010 study. Scientists randomly assigned anxious patients to listen to music either during massage therapy or while lying
in a dim room. After three months, those who just listened to music experienced the same drop in anxiety as those who also got massages.

9)Music can help during surgery- Listening to music before surgery has been shown to ease anxiety and limit the need for sedatives.
After surgery, it helps reduce pain. An analysis of 73 studies in 2015 confirmed that listening to music before, during,
or after surgery improves anxiety
and pain levels, which in turn means less pain medication.

10)Music makes you more creative-People come up with more creative solutions when they listen to happy, upbeat music than when they sit in silence, according to researchers from the Netherlands and Australia. It may be because music improves your brain’s flexibility or because it relaxes you enough for
the creative juices to flow.

11) It gets dopamine flowing- When you listen to music, your brain releases dopamine, the same neurotransmitter that’s released when you eat chocolate, have sex, or use cocaine. It’s also associated with being in love. One small study found that just the anticipation of knowing the best part of a song is coming
can get the dopamine flowing.

12) Music makes you more comfortable- Music distracts you from your discomfort and motivates you to stay with the beat. The effect is so profound that the author of a 2012 review examining the psychological effects of music on exercise called music “a type of legal performance-enhancing drug.”

13) Helps one to have sound sleep- Lullabies aren’t just for babies. Listening to music before bed can help you fall asleep faster, wake up less often during the night, and feel more rested in the morning, according to the researchers. In one study, seniors with sleep problems who listened to 45 minutes of soft, slow music before bed reported a 35 percent improvement in the duration of their shut-eye and less dysfunction throughout the day.

14) Music helps to heal fast-  Music has been used to heal
for centuries, and now we’re learning why it works. The latest meta-analysis of 400 studies finds that listening to music promotes
the body’s production of an antibody (called immunoglobulin A) that
attacks viruses and bacteria, as well as natural “killer cells,” which kill
invading viruses and cancerous cells.

15) It makes time fly by- Time does fly when you’re listening to music: Scientists have shown repeatedly that people judge
a period of waiting as shorter when music is playing. Retailers use that to their advantage, playing music so you stay longer and spend more. For instance, more drinks and food are sold in bars and restaurants when music (especially slow music) is played. And grocery sales increase by 38 percent when the background music is slow.

16) Music helps to reduce pain-  In one study, adults who
focused on childhood melodies while receiving safe electric shocks decreased their pain by 17 percent overall. Other studies show that music may reduce pain for fibromyalgia and cancer patients. It works on kids, too: Children who listened to soothing and/or upbeat music while having
an IV inserted reported less pain and distress compared with those who had the procedure in silence, according to a study.

17) It helps Alzheimer's patients remember- Maybe you’ve heard about Alzheimer’s patients coming alive when they hear a song from their past. Studies show that music helps them retrieve memories, communicate more effectively, and remember who they are. Singing is particularly powerful; the researchers demonstrated that
Alzheimer’s patients who regularly belt out their favorites may boost their cognitive function over time.

MASSAGING FEET AT NIGHT IS BENEFICIAL

People have always been saying it is good to be on your feet, right? Well, it is because, our nerve endings for various organs can be found in our feet. So, when we walk, those various pressure points get pressed, which takes care of various organs. At times, one or few points may get blocked, by massaging, we're able to release those blockages, which help the energy flow between various organs properly. It not only cures various diseases by massaging our feet, it also helps us to relax and have a sound sleep.

Reflexology has been shown to be extremely effective in relieving all kinds of pain, stress, and aches. It's as simple as applying pressure to certain spots on your hands and feet to increase the blood flow to various parts in the body.

The desire to get away from medications and to take matters into our own hands is a tried and true method that has worked for ages. Sometimes it's simply because we don't want to experience the side effects of certain medications or we simply don't like taking pills. Whatever the case, here are some reasons to massage your feet and how to do it.

Reflexology has been shown to be extremely effective in relieving all kinds of pain, stress, and aches. It's as simple as applying pressure to certain spots on your hands and feet to increase the blood flow to various parts in the body. Reflexology in particular focuses on the stimulation of reflex points that help regulate and alleviate abnormalities in different body parts. As human beings, we have a vast network of nerves (over 15000!) that connect to different areas of the body. A major plus of performing reflexology is that it's relatively effortless and completely free to perform from home. That's right, no need to fork over any money for medication or to get a massage from a registered massage therapist, you can do all these pain relieving techniques straight from the comfort of the very chair you're sitting in.

1)Relaxation: Massaging the feet at night gives a perfect relaxation and helps you to cope with the long and tiring day. It is simply a great way for the reduction of stress and feels relaxed.

2) Improving blood circulation: We all know that a good blood circulation is an essence of maintaining good health. If blood cannot circulate freely, it may give rise to many health problems. A foot massage at the specific point before going to bed significantly helps in the improvement of the flow of blood.

3) Good sleep: Massaging the feet at night plays a crucial role in having a good night’s sleep which is extremely beneficial for good health.

4) Reduce PMS: Pre-Menstrual Syndrome abbreviated as PMS is a difficult battle that all women have to deal with. PMS causes a lot of pain accompanied by a lot of physical changes. To effectively deal with PMS feet massaging at night is an excellent option.

5) Reduce pains and aches: Massaging the feet every night before going to bed is a very effective way in the reduction of various types of pains and aches of the body. A proper and regular massage is recommended in this situation for more effective relief from pains.

6)Good for headaches and migraines: Another amazing benefit of feet massaging at night is that it helps to give you a great relief from headaches and migraines. It gives you a quick relief and most importantly without taking any medicines or having to face any other side effects.

7) Reduces heel pain: Many experience difficulties with heel pain in the morning after waking up. Feet massage at night before going to bed is a great way for the reduction of pain in the heels. At the same time, it also helps to deal with pain from flat feet.

8)Fights depression: A feet massage at night time also helps to fight depression effectively, and in this case, it is recommended to give a self-massage.

Thus, a foot massage at night is highly beneficial, and Ayurveda encourages massaging with oil as the benefits are multiplied when the foot is massaged with medicated oils.

Solution for obesity in medicinal herb? Chinese scientists discover magical compound!

The fact that obesity is a step toward long term health problems is not unknown.

It can negatively affect most of your organs – especially the heart – make you vulnerable to diabetes, joint pains, arthritis, make it difficult for women during pregnancy – basically, impact your overall health.

Obesity is one of the biggest problems that is swiftly becoming a part of everyone's life. The rising number of obese people around the world just goes to show how we are allowing a particular lifestyle to dictate us into an unhealthy state of being.

Various diets, numerous forms of exercise are supremely helpful, but these things will bear fruit only if they are offered pure dedicated and devoted effort.

Now, to help you in your weight loss journey, Chinese scientists have discovered a compound from the extract of a medicinal herb which targets cell metabolism and may help prevent obesity.

The new compound Celastrol was extracted from thunder god vine, a natural extract that reduces pain and inflammation, and artemisinin developed from sweet wormwood.

The research team led by Zhang Xiaokun, professor with the College of Medicine at Xiamen University, found that Celastrol could clear inflamed mitochondria from cells to alleviate inflammation, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Mitochondria plays an integral role in cell death, immunity and inflammation. By affecting inflamed mitochondria, Celastrol can help control cell metabolism.

Zhang said his team would continue to research how Celastrol regulates metabolism to explore new drugs with low toxicity and high efficiency to help people lose weight.

The team carried out the research on mice and found that Celastrol could effectively control weight increases in mice feeding on high fat food.

Like sweet wormwood, thunder god vine is native to China though it also grows in other East Asian countries.

The herb has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating arthritis and autoimmune diseases, the report said.

However, the whole plant is extremely toxic and in modern research has been used in clinical trials on AIDS treatment.

Its compounds have been found to have the potential to treat joint pain and rheumatoid arthritis, the report said.

The discovery of artemisinin had won Chinese scientist Tu Youyou the Nobel Prize in 2015.

The research was published in science journal Molecular Cell on Thursday.

The research has been supported by the National Nature and Science Foundation and Xiamen South Sea Center.
