Beware of Signs That Confirm COVID-19 is Spreading in Your Lungs

COVID-19 is associated with various complications and the most severe ones begin appearing when the SARS-CoV-2 starts spreading in your lungs. This is the time when your condition may start worsening and you can start experiencing other pulmonary and lung complications. COVID-19 reaches this stage when you are not able to diagnose the condition in its preliminary phase. Here, we tell you about a few warning signs to look for in order to avoid the development of the complication.

SARS-CoV-2 divides and increases in number in your chest linings. This is how it further causes inflammation and also creates a blockage in your chest. This causes constant coughing. If you are experiencing a dry cough and that persists for at least 2 weeks, you need to consult a doctor as it is a sign of lung infection.

Shortness of Breath

When the COVID-19 causing virus enters your lungs and blocks the entry point of oxygen to the lungs, you feel shortness of breath. A dip in your oxygen level can turn fatal and you may require ventilation support.

Chest Pain

COVID-19 can cause lung damage and that can lead to chest pain. If you suddenly start feeling this symptom, you need to consult a doctor as it can be a sign of severe COVID-19 infection.

This is only for your information, kindly take the advice of your doctor for medicines, exercises and so on.

Internal bleeding post-heart attack might be sign of cancer

Internal bleeding during the first 6 months after being discharged from hospital for a heart attack treatment might indicate the development of cancer in the body, a new study has found.

The findings of this study were presented at ESC Congress 2019.

“Patients should seek medical advice if they experience bleeding after discharge for a heart attack,” said study author.

“Particularly if the bleeding is of gastrointestinal, pulmonary or genitourinary origin, without any obvious reason, and occurs in the first six months. If the cause is cancer, early detection can improve prognosis,” suggested the researcher.

Following discharge for acute coronary syndrome (heart attack or unstable angina), patients are typically treated with dual antiplatelet therapy for around one year.

This treatment inhibits the formation of blood clots but raises the risk of bleeding.

Researchers for the study retrospectively reviewed the hospital records of 3,644 acute coronary syndrome patients discharged with dual antiplatelet therapy from Alvaro Cunqueiro Hospital.

Patients were followed-up for a median of 56.2 months for bleeding events and cancer. The researchers analysed associations between bleeding and the absolute risk of a new cancer diagnosis.
Bleeding occurred in 1,215 patients (33 per cent) during follow-up and 227 patients (6 per cent) had a new diagnosis of cancer.

After adjustment for factors known to influence bleeding or cancer, post-discharge bleeding was associated with a threefold higher risk of a new cancer diagnosis.

The median time from bleeding to cancer was 4.6 months. The link with cancer increased as the severity of bleeding worsened.

Spontaneous bleeding with no apparent cause was linked with four times higher risk of cancer diagnosis while there was no relation with bleeding due to trauma such as injury or bladder catheterisation.

Regarding the location, blood in the faeces was associated with a nearly fourfold risk of cancer diagnosis, while coughing up blood or blood in the urine were linked with four and eight-times greater risks, respectively.

There was a relationship between bleeding and cancer regardless of whether patients were still on dual antiplatelet therapy or not.

The Dr. said, “Most of the bleeding episodes in the study were mild. The bleeding events more strongly related with a new cancer diagnosis were severe haemorrhages of unknown cause requiring surgery – for example, digestive bleeding needing endoscopic treatment.”

“We found a higher incidence of cancer in the first six months after discharge regardless of whether patients were taking dual antiplatelet therapy or not,” the doctor added.

Novel treatment found for disfiguring cutaneous sarcoidosis

A new study has reported successful treatment of a patient with disfiguring sarcoidosis with a drug approved for rheumatoid arthritis.

For several months, a 48 year old, female patient, was treated with arthritis medication tofacitinib, a Jak inhibitor, which blocks a pathway known as Jak-STAT, twice daily. The patient with cutaneous sarcoidosis had not previously had a response to medications and had not received systemic gluco-corticoids. The researchers observes that her skin lesions nearly disappeared. This treatment resulted in clinical and histologic remission of her skin disease. They also performed RNA sequencing on biopsied skin from the patient before and during treatment.

The researcher has pioneered the use of Jak inhibitors to treat other intractable skin diseases, including vitiligo, alopecia areata and eczema.

A frequently awful disease, which to date has no reliably effective therapy, may now be targeted with Jak inhibitors. We've a relatively safe medicine that works. Before treatment, we're able to show that the Jak-STAT pathway is activated, he said.

During treatment, not only does her skin disease go away, but there is no activation of the pathway, he added.

We plan to evaluate the activation of the Jak-STAT pathway in the lung fluid and blood of over 200 patients with pulmonary and multi-organ sarcoidosis, said co-author. These big steps toward understanding a disease that has been a mystery for years, the researchers said. Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that affects multiple organs in the body. While some sarcoidosis patients recover without treatment, others suffer damage to the lungs, heart, lymph nodes, skin and other organs.  Current treatments, including steroids, are not reliably effective for the skin and can cause serious side effects.

Tuberculosis doesn't just affect the lungs; other facts to know

Every year World TB Day is commemorated on March 24 to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of tuberculosis (TB) and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic.

Here are five interesting facts you should know about tuberculosis:

TB doesn't just affect the lungs
While TB is known primarily as a pulmonary (lung) disease, it can also affect other parts of the body, including the kidneys, brain, and spine.

TB is an airborne disease
TB is spread through expelled droplets, every time an infected person coughs, sneezes, or spits. Anyone who breathes in these particles is susceptible to an infection

Smokers are more likely to contract TB
Smokers are more than twice more likely to contract TB, while alcoholics and diabetics are also at a greater risk than the general population.

There is a Vaccine against TB
The Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine is recommended for healthy babies, to be administered as soon as possible after they're born.

Upto 10 per cent of people with latent TB develop active tuberculosis
As an airborne disease, TB is so contagious, it infects a third of the world's population, however only 10 percent actually develop an active infection.

According to a senior consultant in Respiratory Medicine, "Patients with symptoms of TB must visit the doctor at the earliest as with advanced treatment available it can be cured."

"Awareness is the first step towards good health. In infections such as tuberculosis, it is important that patients are fully aware of the burden of the disease, the types of tests needed and the drugs used for treatment," said a Dr.

Kids with asthma may have peanut allergy

Children suffering from asthma may also have peanut allergy, but many are unaware of it because the symptoms are quite similar, says a new study.

The findings suggest that parents should get their asthmatic kids tested for peanut allergy too.

"Many of the respiratory symptoms of peanut allergy can mirror those of an asthma attack, and vice versa. Examples of those symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing," said study lead author Robert Cohn from Mercy Children's Hospital in Toledo, Ohio.

For the study, the researchers looked at 1,517 children from the paediatric pulmonary clinic at Mercy Children's Hospital. They found that about 11 percent of the kids knew they had peanut allergy.

When many of the kids (44 percent) came back for a blood test for peanut allergy, approximately 22 percent were found positive to peanut sensitivity.

However, more than half of these children and their families did not suspect there was any sensitivity to peanuts.

"This study demonstrates children with asthma might benefit from a test for peanut sensitivity, especially when control of wheezing and coughing is difficult to achieve," Cohn pointed out.

"If a physician is having this problem, or if a parent notices it in his or her asthmatic child, they should consider testing, even if they believe their child is not sensitive to peanuts," he cautioned.

The study was presented at the American Thoracic Society (ATS)2015 International Conference at Denver in the US.
