What Are Antioxidants & Their Role In The Body?

Antioxidants are substances that help the body protect itself from harmful molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are not necessarily formed by medicines. It needs change to free radicals produced by enzymatic and nonenzymatic reactions/by inflammation and external factors like smoking x-rays, chemicals, industrial pollutants, ozone and certain drugs. They are sometimes called "free-radical scavengers."

The sources of antioxidants can be natural or artificial. Certain plant-based foods are thought to be rich in antioxidants. Plant-based antioxidants are a kind of phytonutrient, or plant-based nutrient.

Free radicals are waste substances produced by cells as the body processes food and reacts to the environment. If the body cannot process and remove free radicals efficiently, oxidative stress can result. This can harm cells and body function. Free radicals are also known as reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Factors that increase the production of free radicals in the body can be internal, such as inflammation, or external, for example, pollution, UV exposure, and cigarette smoke.

Oxidative stress has been linked to heart disease, cancer, arthritis, stroke, respiratory diseases, immune deficiency, emphysema, Parkinson's disease, and other inflammatory or ischemic conditions.
Antioxidants are said to help neutralize free radicals in our bodies, and this is thought to boost overall health.

Antioxidants include vitamins C and E, beta carotene and minerals such as flavonoids and selenium; both of which are found in plants. The best kind of antioxidants the human body receives is from fruits and veggies. While flavonoids are found in red wine, fruits and in different types of tea; pharmaceutical companies also sell dietary supplements rich in antioxidants.

Antioxidants and their role in the human body:
Antioxidants play a great role in management, prevention and in the subsequent elimination of diseases such as various types of Cancers, Alzheimer’s and a few arthritis related conditions.
How safe are antioxidants for your body?
Medical practitioners are of the opinion that the best source of antioxidants is your natural sources rather than dietary supplements. Over abuse of antioxidants can be lethal for your body. It is always advised to have plenty of fruits and vegetables each day.

Not only does diet contribute to antioxidants, the body too employs certain mechanisms to protect itself from damage. Antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase are few such enzymes. Micronutrients such as iron, copper, selenium, zinc and manganese are required to help facilitate these mechanisms. Inadequate intake of these minerals in your diet might reduce the activities performed by antioxidants; these claims have been backed by scientific studies.

Nowadays different types of snacks are in the market enriched with multivitamins. You can try true elements antioxidant mix roasted snacks to meet your evening cravings. It is one of the perfect snacks which contains the goodness of the chia seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds etc.

There are thought to be hundreds and possibly thousands of substances that can act as antioxidants. Each has its own role and can interact with others to help the body work effectively.
"Antioxidant" is not really the name of a substance, but rather it describes what a range of substances can do.
Examples of antioxidants that come from outside the body include:
  • vitamin A
  • vitamin C
  • vitamin E
  • beta-carotene
  • lycopene
  • lutein
  • selenium
  • manganese
  • zeaxanthin
Flavonoids, flavones, catechins, polyphenols, and phytoestrogens are all types of antioxidants and phytonutrients, and they are all found in plant-based foods.
Each antioxidant serves a different function and is not interchangeable with another. This is why it is important to have a varied diet.

The best sources of antioxidants are plant-based foods, especially fruits and vegetables.
Foods that are particularly high in antioxidants are often referred to as a "superfood" or "functional food."
To obtain some specific antioxidants, try to include the following in your diet:
Vitamin A: Dairy produce, eggs, and liver
Vitamin C: Most fruits and vegetables, especially berries, oranges, and bell peppers
Vitamin E: Nuts and seeds, sunflower and other vegetable oils, and green, leafy vegetables
Beta-carotene: Brightly colored fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, peas, spinach, and mangoes
Lycopene: Pink and red fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes and watermelon
Lutein: Green, leafy vegetables, corn, papaya, and oranges
Selenium: Rice, corn, wheat, and other whole grains, as well as nuts, eggs, cheese, and legumes
Other foods that are believed to be good sources of antioxidants include:
  • eggplants
  • legumes such as black beans or kidney beans
  • green and black teas
  • red grapes
  • dark chocolate
  • pomegranates
  • goji berries
Foods with rich, vibrant colors often contain the most antioxidants.
The following foods are good sources of antioxidants. Click on each one to find out more about their health benefits and nutritional information:
  • blueberries
  • apples
  • broccoli
  • spinach
  • lentils

Effect of cooking

Cooking particular foods can either increase or decrease antioxidant levels.
Lycopene is the antioxidant that gives tomatoes their rich red color. When tomatoes are heat-treated, the lycopene becomes more bio-available (easier for our bodies to process and use).
However, studies have shown that cauliflower, peas, and zucchini lose much of their antioxidant activity in the cooking process. Keep in mind that the important thing is eating a variety of antioxidant-rich foods, cooked and raw.

The following tips could help increase your antioxidant intake:
  • Include a fruit or a vegetable every time you eat, meals and snacks included.
  • Have a cup of green or matcha tea every day.
  • Look at the colors on your plate. If your food is mostly brown or beige, the antioxidant levels are likely to be low. Add in foods with rich colors, such as kale, beets, and berries.
  • Use turmeric, cumin, oregano, ginger, clove, and cinnamon to spice up the flavor and antioxidant content of your meals.
  • Snack on nuts, seeds, especially Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, and dried fruit, but choose those with no added sugar or salt.

World Sickle Cell Day - Everything That You Should Know

World Sickle Cell Day is observed each year on June 19th to raise the public awareness regarding this disease and its treatment methods. Sickle Cell disease is an inherited transmitted deformity/abnormality of haemoglobin. It is an inherited form of anaemia. This abnormality generates changes in the shape of red blood cells from round to crescent, which reduces the oxygen carrying capacity and slows down the flow of blood to various parts of the body.

Generally, red blood vessels are round and flexible, passing easily through the blood vessels. The red blood cells become sticky and rigid in sickle cell anaemia. Sickle cells last 10 to 20 days, which causes anaemia because of the disorder of red blood cells, while healthy red blood cells could live up to 120 days.

Millions of people around the world are affected by Sickle Cell Anemia. There is no specific cure for this disease as Sickle cell anaemia is not contagious, it is hereditary. Sickle cell anaemia is named so for the reason that red blood cells are crescent-shaped or sickle-shaped, and anaemia signifies lack of blood. There is a difference between iron-deficiency anaemia and sickle cell anaemia.

Symptoms
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) has many symptoms which includes: serious anemia, episodes of suffering, additionally a range of complications, heart failure, dizziness,  chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute chest syndrome (ACS), chest pain, gallstones, pulmonary hypertension, immune deficiency, paralysis or stroke, splenomegaly, joint damage mainly in the hip joint, foot ulcers, delayed puberty, retinopathy, and endocrine disorders.

Diagnosis
Sickle Cell Disease is diagnosed by blood tests.

Treatment
Bone marrow transplant or stem cell transplant in patients usually below the age of sixteen is the only available cure for the disease.

Aim of the World Sickle Cell Day
The aim of the World Sickle Cell Day is to support and promote research for the patients in order to help them upgrade their overall quality of life to the maximum possible extent. It also aspires to increase awareness for sickle cell disease disorder in the general public so that they know how to deal with patients suffering from the disease. Moreover, the World Sickle Cell Day has the objective of raising awareness of the importance among generations of pre-marital screening to lessen the transmission of Sickle Cell Disease.

Target Groups for Awareness Programs
Though it is desirable that everybody knows about Sickle Cell Disease, the target groups for the awareness programs include health decision-makers, sickle cell anaemia sufferers and their families, health organizations and associations, people who are planning to get married, and the health workers including health educators, physicians, and nurses.

On the World Sickle Cell Day, different societies provide advocacy, information, and advice for raising awareness. They also provide educational and welfare grants, support services, annual children’s holiday, home help, hospital visits, mentoring and befriending through holding talks, assisting into research and training, lobbying for better service provision, patient education seminars, and campaigning.

How Hazardous 'Forever Chemicals' Get In Food and Drinking Water

A recent report by the FDA raises awareness about a class of hazardous chemicals called PFAS worldwide. Dubbed ‘forever chemicals’ in media and news outlets, PFAS are known to have many adverse health effects. It has been known for some time that forever chemicals can contaminate water supplies, but the new report found them in common foods such as milk, lettuce and chocolate cake mix as well. Continue reading for a review of the report, as well as PFAS and their health effects.

What are Forever Chemicals?

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a class of extremely resistant man-made chemicals used in various industries worldwide since the 1940’s. There are over 5.000 different types of PFAS, with PFOA and PFOS being the most used and studied ones.
The main benefit and drawback of these chemicals is that they are very stable and don’t break down in contact with oil, water and heat. This makes them very useful in manufacturing stain- and water-resistant clothing, shoes and furniture, as well as nonstick cookware, oil-resistant food packaging, paints and polishes. PFAS are also a key ingredient in producing fire-fighting foams.
Since the early 2000’s, scientists started finding PFAS in different concentrations around plants that used it in the production process, including freshwater sources, soil and in animals. They noticed that these chemicals are so resistant that they don’t break down and accumulate in the surroundings, as well as living organisms.
By 2006, there was sufficient evidence proving that these chemicals (PFOS and PFOA in particular) were harmful for the environment and human health, which urged the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to ban the production of only one such chemical, PFOA, in the United States. However, it can still enter the U.S. from abroad, where it continues to be manufactured.
PFAS Forever Chemicals nonstick pans

In 2019, the UN banned all production of PFOA worldwide and by the end of the year, this specific chemical will no longer be manufactured. Still, there are several locations in the United States that have been polluted by forever chemicals in the past, and the recent FDA report shows that in some of these locations, PFAS pollution deeply penetrated the environment and even the food industry.

How Can You be Exposed to PFAS?

There are several ways you can be exposed to different amounts of forever chemicals. We discuss each below.

1. At your workplace. Some manufaturing facilities, such as those producing electronics, chrome plates use PFAS in the manufacturing process, and so do some oil recovery facilities. Firefighters are exposed to PFAS because it’s in fire-fighting foams.

2. From drinking water. If you live near a firefighter training facility, landfill, wastewater treatment facility, or plant that manufactures or uses PFAS, the chemicals can seep into the drinking water supply and contaminate it.

3. From foods. PFAS build up in foods, such as fish, meat, milk and plant foods as they are exposed to forever chemicals through polluted soil, water, as well as equipment or food packaging containing PFAS.

4. From home goods. As we mentioned previously, PFAS are widely used in the production of water-resistant clothing, textiles, shoes and nonstick cookware, all of which get in contact with your body.

Recently, FDA representatives took 91 samples from grocery stores across the country, especially in locations with known PFAS contamination. The conclusions of this process were summed up in a report that found that a dairy farm in New Mexico could be a health hazard. The dairy products had high levels of PFAS that came from groundwater contaminated with forever chemicals.

A similar case of contamination was also found at a farm producing leafy green vegetables in North Carolina, as well as 12 other samples, but the FDA concluded that none of these contaminated products posed a health concern.

Despite the conclusions, these findings are very alarming, especially since we know that PFAS can accumulate in the human body for years until they cause adverse health effects. More on these specific effects below.

The Health Effects of Forever Chemicals

Medical studies recognize that PFAS can cause an abundance of serious health problems, such as:
  • Cancer
  • Infertility and reproductive issues
  • Liver and kidney conditions
  • High cholesterol and hypertension
  • Thyroid issues
  • Immune deficiency.
Still, we don’t know a lot about the real long-term effects of these chemicals, as they haven’t been studied enough. The strongest evidence of the above-listed health hazards of PFAS we have for now is from a study that looked at the long-term effects of water contamination in Ohio and West Virginia since the 1950's until 2002.
As of 2019, there are no laws regulating the safe levels for forever chemicals in the environment, as well as the food industry and manufacturing. Hopefully, in the near future, such binding regulations will appear and the production of forever chemicals will be brought to a possible minimum.

Need to spread awareness on lupus

Till last year this mother had not heard of lupus, a serious and disabling autoimmune disease. It was only when her 21-year-old daughter was diagnosed with it that she started researching it.

Her daughter is currently undergoing treatment for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), or lupus, at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

It was in August last year, two days before her birthday, that girl had high fever after which she was diagnosed with SLE. Since then it has been a long journey for the family, going from one hospital to another.

“First we thought it is just fever. But the fever only increased and her face swelled. We took her to a private doctor who said he could not diagnose the problem. So, we went to a private hospital which referred her to another hospital where we heard about the disease for the first time,” said the mother.

However, her treatment was not successful at this Hospital and it was then that she was brought to AIIMS. On Tuesday, she was at the premier institute for a follow-up.

Even though the girl appears healthy, she is not able to do much physical activity like other girls her age due to constant pain in the joints. “The treatment here is going good, but there are days when she  coughs a lot of blood. She doesn’t go out of the house much. She needs a lot of rest,” said her mother.

“When people ask about this disease, we don’t know how to explain,” she added.

Lupus arises from immunity deficiency, which damages healthy tissues. Under normal conditions, the immune system makes antibodies to protect and fight against antigens such as viruses and bacteria. Lupus makes the immune system unable to differentiate between antigens and healthy tissue and thus antibodies attack the latter also.

On the eve of “World Lupus Day”, doctors said that even though an estimated 5 million people worldwide have lupus, there is not much awareness about the disease, which prevents early diagnosis.
“Out of every 100 patients in AIIMS, one is suffering from lupus. But people and doctors often confuse it with TB as one of the symptoms is coughing out blood. There is no cure for lupus. But if detected early, it can be managed successfully,” said Dr Uma Kumar, the head of department of rheumatology at AIIMS.

Lupus is more common in young women between the age group of 20-40 years. Common symptoms include fever, overwhelming fatigue, painful and swollen joints, skin rashes, excessive hair fall, breathlessness, and photosensitivity. It can damage any organ like the skin or kidney.

Dr Kumar added that the disease flares up in summer as ultraviolet rays are potent inducers.

Even air pollution in some cases triggers the “aberrant immune response.” In fact, a study conducted in Brazil last year has confirmed that air pollution is an important contributory factor in lupus. This year the theme for World Lupus Day is “lupus knows no boundaries”.
