The Benefits of Spending Time Alone

While I enjoy spending time with my loved ones, I do treasure moments to myself too - it is my way to disconnect from the distractions around me, while also giving me a moment to tune into and reconnect with myself. Seeking solitude is something that I take the time to do often, and over the years, I have found that being alone has had its benefits on my health and well-being too, contributing to both physical and psychological effects.

Here are six things that I have learned in seeking solitude.
The Benefits of Seeking Solitude
Solitude allows you to reboot your brain and unwind.

In today's constantly connected world, our minds are continually on 'on' mode, whereby, we hardly give our brain a chance to rest and replenish itself. Spending time alone, however, with no distractions, is one of the best ways to clear the mind. It enables us to focus, to think more clearly and it also gives us the opportunity to revitalize, not only our mind but our body too.

Solitude helps to improve concentration and increase productivity.
Seeking solitude takes us away from distractions and interruptions that bombard us every day. Without these distractions, we are better able to concentrate, thus enabling us to get more work done in a shorter amount of time.

Solitude gives you an opportunity to discover yourself and find your inner voice.
Being part of a group, be it family, friends or colleagues, means that we are often more likely to go along with what the group is doing or thinking. But this may not always be the action that we would take, nor would it be a decision that we would make had we been on our own.

Solitude provides time for you to think deeply.
Everyday chores, responsibilities, as well as stress and worries, can often get the better of us. This constant motion, of feeling as though we continually have something to do or to think about, prevents us from engaging in deep thought and reflection. But not taking the time to reflect on our life can often inhibit creativity and lessen productivity.

Solitude helps you work through problems more effectively.

When we are constantly distracted by incoming information (be it through electronic means, or from people), it is hard to think of an effective solution to our problems. Seeking solitude gives us the time to think through our thoughts and our issues.

Solitude can enhance the quality of your relationship with others.
Spending time alone will give us a better understanding of who we are and what we desire in life. It also enables us to make better choices about who we want to be around. And, we also tend to become more appreciative of the relationships that we do have, once we have spent time alone.

School children discover ancient family recipe with antimalarial properties

London schoolchildren recently discovered that some of their families' soup recipes, which have been passed through generations, have antimalarial properties.

Researchers helped the schoolchildren test their family soup broths for activity against the malaria parasite, for a study which was published in the Journal Archives of Disease in Childhood.

Several of the soup broths, collected from traditional family recipes that originated around the world, showed activity against the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, either by curbing its growth or preventing it from maturing. The soup recipes had been passed down through the generations for the treatment of fever.

Five of the broths were able to curb the growth of the parasite in its disease-causing stage by more than 50 per cent. In two of these, the inhibitory activity was comparable with that of a leading antimalarial drug, dihydroartemisinin.

Four other broths were more than 50 per cent effective at blocking the ability of the parasites to mature to a form that infects mosquitoes, potentially blocking the process of transmission.

Dihydroarteminisin contains artemisinin, which was isolated from a traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The researchers behind the new study hope that they may similarly discover new antimalarial compounds from the work looking at the soup. The next step is to identify the active ingredients responsibly.

Lead researcher Professor Jake Baum, from the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial, said: "Malaria kills more than 400,000 people per year and infects more than 200 million, yet resistance to our frontline drugs continues to emerge. We may have to look beyond the chemistry shelf for new drugs, and natural remedies shouldn't be off our watch list, as artemisinin shows."

The pupils brought in samples of homemade clear soup broths from family recipes from across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Filtered extracts of the broths were then tested against two stages of the parasite: when it can infect mosquitoes, and when it can cause the disease in humans.

The recipes for each of the broths varied. They were vegetarian, chicken or beef-based, with no particular ingredient common to those with the strongest antimalarial activity.

The active ingredients in the broths studied are yet to be identified and tested. To move forward, the active ingredients would need to be isolated, before tests of toxicology and effectiveness, first in human cells and later preclinical trials.

Professor Baum said: "It's really interesting to find potential routes for future drug development in something like your grandmother's soup. In all honesty, the true strength of the study, however, was engaging children in the idea of what's the difference between a natural remedy and a real medicine - the answer is evidence! The children understood that soups could really become a drug if you test them the right way."

Scientists discover promising off-switch for inflammation

Scientists have discovered a new metabolic process in the body that can switch off inflammation. They found that ‘itaconate’ – a molecule derived from glucose – acts as a powerful off-switch for macrophages, which are the cells in the immune system that lie at the heart of many inflammatory diseases. “It is well known that macrophages cause inflammation, but we have just found that they can be coaxed to make a biochemical called itaconate,” said a scientist.

“This functions as an important brake, or off-switch, on the macrophage, cooling the heat of inflammation in a process never before described,” he said. The discovery, is very much on the frontier of inflammation research and the researchers are now exploring its relevance to the onset and development of inflammatory and infectious diseases. They are also keen to explore whether the findings can be exploited in the effort to develop new anti-inflammatory medicines.

“The macrophage takes the nutrient glucose, whose day job it is to provide energy, and surprisingly turns it into itaconate,” said a scientist. “This then blocks production of inflammatory factors, and also protects mice from the lethal inflammation that can occur during infection,” he said.

BE YOUR OWN INSPIRATION

1) Be your own inspiration- No one knows what you are "really" thinking or feeling. So why not be your own inspiration? Think about it - if you're the one who knows you the best then you're the only person who can truly evoke change and pin point what you want to improve.

Instead of looking to others for a spark or bode of confidence - use others as reinforcement but look to yourself for inspiration. Here are 10 tips to help you become your own inspiration.

2)List your goal and plan to achieve it- Write down the goal or improvement, now write out all of the big goals that you will need to accomplish to achieve it and then fill in the blanks by writing down the smaller goals/tasks that you will have to complete.

Writing it down on paper is like making a check list. You will feel a sense of satisfaction each time you are able to check off a task that you accomplished. Seeing the plan on paper will help you stay focused and the visual will help you not forget important to-dos.

3) Stop being negative! It's simple instead of focusing on the things that you're not happy with focus on the things you are satisfied with. You may not like your height, so focus on your amazing muscles. Look for the positive within every aspect. You may not like being short but at least you can wear heels and not tower over everyone. Find a positive to your negative and it will make life a lot easier.

You can apply this aspect to your daily life as well. Bummer - you have to stay up late to study for a test; soon you will have that degree and land the job of your dreams. Focus on the positivity!

Remove negativity and the question what if. If your thought process doesn't consist of the possibility that something will not go the way you want, then you will be a happier person. Disappointment is inevitable in life but it is a lot easier to adjust when you're not constantly preparing for a disaster.

4) Never give up- Next time you hear the two letter word no, train your brain to hear not yet instead. No is not a permanent answer and doesn't mean that something will never happen or change. No just means that it isn't going to happen in that instance however it will eventually happen if you continue to stay focused and remain positive. Determination is the key to achieving dreams. Everything happens for a reason, so if something did work out there's a reason and God has a plan.

5) Embrace your sadness-  Instead of falling into a pitfall - embrace your sadness and flaws. Even though it may seem like the world is falling from beneath your feet, keep in mind that everything happens for a reason and that this too shall pass. Everything that occurs in life will help you become the person that you are meant to be - so breath in your sadness and make the most out of it. Embracing something that is crippling or debilitating may seem difficult, but remember that your sadness plays an important part of your life just like happiness.

6) Learn to be humble- Never get ahead of yourself - stay grounded. Being humble will keep you from becoming blinded by success and selfishness; instead you will keep others in your thoughts and remember to be there for your friends and family.

7) Appreciate nature and everything around you- No matter how busy you get in life, take time to look around at your surroundings. No matter what it is: the beautiful sunset, the blooming flowers, the smiling couple that are so in love, the laughing child swinging on the swing and the person you're riding in the elevator with. Live each day to the fullest and soak up everything around you. Everything that occurs in your daily life moulds you into the person you are today and will be tomorrow. Appreciate life!

8) Dress to be happy for yourself- When you're dressed nicely it makes you have an extra bounce in your step and gives you an extra bode of confidence. Feeling good about yourself will help you stay motivated and give you the confidence that will help you take on the world. Aim to make yourself happy!

9) Ask What if? And not why not instead? - A dream according to Webster is something that fully satisfies a wish, a strongly desired goal or purpose, or a visionary creation of the imagination. No matter how you define it - dreams are not impossible. If you dream it up, then it's possible. Maintain the mindset, no matter how rough things may get, that anything is possible. Instead of asking yourself why not, remain focus and do things within your power to make it happen. What if you do this or that - your dreams could be within reach.

10) Discover yourself- You are in control of you. You're the author of your own book and whatever the next chapter has in store is totally up to you. Live a fulfilled life and reinvent yourself to reflect your growth. You're the only person who's in control of improving your life and yourself.
