Bukgur Is Great For Your Heart and Weight Loss

 Bulgur in a bowl

Even though bulgur is a staple grain in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines, consumers who live outside of these geographical regions are often unfamiliar with this grain and how to use it. This is a real shame because bulgur is not only a super nutritious grain, but it is also much easier to prepare than other grains, such as rice and oatmeal.

Bulgur is a low-glycemic whole food that can become a useful staple in your kitchen, and we’re here to tell you everything you need to know about the nutrition benefits and uses of this whole grain.

What is bulgur?

Bulgur is similar to cracked wheat. The raw base for bulgur is either durum wheat or another wheat variety. The entire wheat kernel - the germ, the endosperm, and the bran - is used to prepare bulgur, which means that it’s a whole grain and is superior to refined grains like white rice, quick oats, and white flour in terms of nutrition.

Unlike cracked wheat, however, bulgur is partially steamed, or parboiled, and then cracked, so that it can be prepared quickly. Parboiling also enhances the flavor of this whole grain, giving it a pleasant nuttiness while also preserving a satisfying hearty texture. You can easily find bulgur in the grain aisle at any grocery store, and it’s relatively inexpensive.

The health benefits of Bulgur

 Bulgur nutrition facts

Since bulgur is a minimally processed grain, it’s significantly more nutrient-rich than refined products made of wheat, such as white flour, pasta, white bread, and the like. It’s also important to point out that bulgur is also lower in calories than other whole grains, namely brown rice or quinoa.

Bulgur is an excellent source of fiber, with 1 cup of cooked bulgur containing 8 grams of dietary fiber. It’s also particularly rich in vitamins B3, B6, and B9 (folate), as well as magnesium, iron, and manganese (for more information, see the table above). Eating bulgur regularly is rewarding for one’s health, too.

Nutrition experts outline the following health benefits associated with this whole grain:

Weight loss and improved digestion.

The dietary fiber present in high quantities in bulgur, as well as its pleasant chewy texture, make it a very satisfying and filling food to eat. This means fewer food cravings. In addition, eating whole grains is known to promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria, which will improve your digestion and promote regular bowel movements.
Heart health.
Eating primarily whole grains promotes long-term heart health and keeps that bad LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol level low. “Whole grains and dietary fiber can help lower total and LDL cholesterol, which reduces the risk of heart disease,” according to Danielle Gaffen, a registered nutritionist and dietitian. Studies point out that a diet rich in whole grains can reduce one’s risk of lifelong heart disease by as much as 20%. In these studies, the participants consumed between 3 and 7.5 servings of whole grains a day, which is about 90-225 g (3-8 oz).

Natural blood sugar control.
Unlike refined grains, whole grains are what doctors call low-glycemic foods, which are foods that don’t raise blood sugar very quickly and reduce the blood sugar spike after a meal. In fact, research suggests that whole grains improve insulin sensitivity, which means that they’re good for reducing your risk of diabetes. Bulgur has plenty of fiber and phytonutrients, which are good for blood sugar control.
How to use bulgur in cuisine
Bulgur originated in the Mediterranean thousands of years ago, and it remains a staple food in this region, as well as the Middle East. Bulgur is an extremely versatile ingredient that can be easily combined with other Mediterranean staple ingredients, such as seafood, beans, nuts, fresh herbs, olive oil, and tomatoes, to name just a few. The result is an array of delicious, filling, and healthy dishes.
Preparation.
All you have to do to prepare bulgur is to add two parts of boiling water and let it steep under a lid for 15-20 minutes. Due to its versatility and easy preparation, you can prepare batches of bulgur and add them to salads or wraps to make them heartier, more filling, and richer in fiber.

Chia Seeds Side Effects: These People Must Avoid Them At All Costs, Doctors Warn

 चिया सीड्स

Chia seeds, often hailed as a "superfood", have become a staple in the diets of health-conscious individuals worldwide. Rich in fibre, omega-3 fatty acids, and minerals, they are widely promoted for aiding weight management, controlling blood sugar, and supporting heart health. However, nutritionists caution that these tiny seeds may not suit everyone. In some cases, their consumption can trigger complications serious enough to warrant medical attention.

Medical experts underline four categories of people who should approach chia seeds with care, or avoid them entirely. Those on blood-thinning drugs or medication for high blood pressure are at particular risk. "Chia seeds contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which can further thin the blood," warn health professionals. This can result in excessive bleeding or a dangerous drop in blood pressure if combined with prescribed medication.

While chia seeds are valued for their high fibre content, they may cause bloating, constipation, or abdominal pain in those with sensitive digestive systems. Doctors recommend moderation or avoidance for anyone with a history of gastrointestinal problems.

Expectant and nursing mothers are advised not to introduce chia seeds into their diets without prior consultation with a doctor. Nutritional requirements during these phases are unique, and introducing new foods without guidance could carry unforeseen risks.

Here's a Much Healthier Alternative to Regular Coffee!

Mushroom coffee has quickly become a popular alternative to traditional coffee. This unique beverage combines the morning coffee ritual with the potential health benefits of adaptogenic mushrooms. It is lauded for its ability to potentially boost immunity, improve mental clarity, and reduce stress. Different types of functional mushrooms, like lion’s mane, chaga, and reishi, are used in these blends, each offering distinct advantages.

As people look for natural ways to improve their well-being, mushroom coffee provides an opportunity to merge the energy-boosting effects of coffee with potential health benefits.

Here, we will explore the science behind mushroom coffee, how to make it, and discuss the potential benefits and things to consider when incorporating this trendy drink into your daily routine.

How is mushroom coffee made?
Mushroom CoffeeMushroom coffee is made by combining regular coffee with medicinal mushrooms to create a unique and healthy drink. The process starts with sourcing high-quality coffee beans and medicinal mushrooms like lion’s mane, chaga, reishi, or cordyceps, all known for their health benefits.
First, the mushrooms are gathered and dried. After drying, they undergo a careful extraction process to obtain their active compounds. This usually involves extracting with hot water, alcohol, or a combination of both to capture the full range of beneficial compounds. The extracts are then transformed into a fine powder.

Next, high-quality coffee beans are roasted to the desired level and then ground. The mushroom powder is mixed with the coffee grounds in specific ratios, typically ranging from a small percentage up to 50%, depending on the desired strength and flavor profile. This blend ensures that each cup of mushroom coffee delivers both the robust taste of regular coffee and the health benefits of mushrooms.

For convenience, mushroom coffee is available in various forms, including instant coffee packets, ground coffee blends, and coffee pods. Making mushroom coffee is as easy as brewing regular coffee—using a coffee maker, French press, or simply adding hot water for instant varieties. This innovative process results in a beverage that offers a smooth, rich flavor with added health benefits, making it an attractive choice for health-conscious coffee lovers.

5 Possible Benefits of Mushroom Coffee

Medicinal mushrooms have played an important part in traditional Chinese medicine for generations. These mushrooms contain active compounds known as adaptogens, which are believed to enhance the body’s ability to manage stress.

Since the 1970s, researchers have become more interested in the possible health benefits of mushroom-derived adaptogens. However, it is important to note that most research has been done on animals or in laboratory settings, with only a few well-designed clinical trials including humans.

Thus, the findings should be seen as preliminary, and might not fully represent the effects on human cells in a real-world context. That being said, let's consider what the available evidence suggests about the potential benefits of drinking mushroom coffee.

Immune system support
Turkey Tail mushroom is an adaptogen sometimes found in mushroom coffee. It's rich in beta-glucans, which may stimulate the immune system. Research suggests that turkey tail extracts could benefit immune function in cancer patients undergoing treatment. While more research is needed for healthy individuals, the immune-boosting benefits of Turkey Tail in mushroom coffee may be worth investigating.

Also, while the evidence for reishi mushrooms and immune function is currently limited to test-tube studies, preliminary research shows promise. The findings of several test tube studies have indicated that reishi mushrooms can promote the function of cells' immune systems.

Can help with blood sugar control

Recent preliminary research suggests that mushrooms may help prevent and manage diabetes by regulating blood sugar levels. A comprehensive review of previous studies, which included test tube experiments, animal research, and small-scale human trials, indicated that several forms of mushrooms—whole, extract, and powdered—exhibit potential blood sugar-regulating properties.

Enhanced cognitive function

Mushroom coffee and supplements are often touted for their brain-boosting properties. A review analyzing studies on mushrooms and brain health found positive associations between mushroom consumption (including lion's mane) and improved cognition and mood in large population studies. However, the authors call for more specific research to definitively link mushrooms to these benefits.

Potential for cancer prevention

Could mushrooms be a weapon against cancer? This is a question scientists are actively investigating. Studies using lion's mane extract in a laboratory setting have shown promising results in terms of protecting against leukemia cells. Another study found that lion's mane extract might reduce tumor development in cancer cells in mice. However, it's important to remember that these are early findings that require further research.

Reduced heart disease risk

An in vitro (laboratory) study looked at the possible effects of Reishi mushroom extract on cholesterol. The results suggest the extract might play a role in lowering LDL cholesterol, the "bad" cholesterol, and increasing HDL cholesterol, the "good" cholesterol. However, do note that this is a preliminary study conducted in a controlled setting, and further research is needed to confirm these findings in humans.

5 Teas You Need to Drink and How to Make Them

Tea has been around for thousands of centuries, and there's a good reason why. Numerous studies show that traditional tea made from Camellia sinensis leaves is not only a soothing warm drink, but it may also help ward off cancer, type 2 diabetes, and arthritis.

This brew was once considered an official medicine in ancient Chinese culture. While it is still a component of today's herbal remedies, these days you'll find hundreds of different teas that are said to fight various diseases. Warm tea has also been proven to stimulate the digestive system as well as boost immunity, ease stress and enhance physical endurance.

Sip on the five teas below to help boost your health:
tea
1. Oolong tea
Health benefit: weight loss
According to research, drinking oolong tea may give your metabolism a boost and increase the body's energy levels. This lightly fermented black tea can help you shed a few pounds by increasing the number of calories you burn. While the reasons for this aren't completely known, scientists think the caffeine and flavanols, typically found in black and green teas may work as fat-burning agents. This tea is often served in Chinese restaurants. It's got a sweet and fruity taste that is good served both hot or cold. One serving generally yields around 75mg of caffeine, about half the amount in a cup of coffee. So, whether you are looking for a little pick-me-up or something to supplement your weight loss regime, steep some of this tea.

Here's How: Place 1 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons of oolong tea in a pot or cup, either directly or in an infuser. Pour 6 ounces pre-boiled water over the tea leaves. Steep anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes.

2. Peppermint and holy basil tea
Health benefit: liver protection and immunity
This minty tea is refreshing and can be enjoyed steaming or chilled. The peppermint will help relax the stomach, while the holy basil (tulsi) is a super herb widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. Deemed the mother medicine of nature, tulsi has a broad array of healing property ranges from preventing infections to taming anxiety. Numerous studies show that holy basil can also protect the liver and kidneys from damage caused by ingesting pesticides and industrial chemicals, sometimes found in fruits and vegetables.

Here's How: To make the tea, boil the water and pour a teaspoon of holy basil leaves. Allow to steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Holy basil pairs well with other extras including a blend of herbs such as peppermint, lemon or ginger, or a dash of honey!
tea
3. Rhodiola tea

Health benefit: improved endurance and exercise recovery
If you suffer from anxiety, Rhodiola tea is a great place to start. Studies have also found it to increase endurance and quicker exercise recovery time. The tea doesn't contain caffeine so it will leave you feeling energized without suffering from an energy crash later on. Its flavor is subtle, with hints of rose.

Here's How: Once the roots are dried and ground, 5 grams of finely chopped Rhodiola root can be steeped in hot water. If you have a steeper, you can prepare the tea with that, if not, pack tea bags with the root. The water should be hot, but the roots should not be exposed to temperatures higher than 85 degrees Fahrenheit, as it can damage the active ingredients in the root. Usually, the tea is left to steep for extended periods of time.

4. Seaweed tea  tea
Health benefit: essential mineral boost
While you may have eaten seaweed before, have you ever given much thought to drinking it? Seaweed offers the broadest range of minerals in comparison to other food. It contains thyroid-protecting iodine, immune-boosting vitamin C and energizing iron. Brewing it will enable you to take advantage of its nutritional benefits. It also contains about 60 trace minerals essential for the human body. Regular intake of seaweed maintains hair health and promotes growth.

Tip: Your best bet would be to find edible seaweed tea from a health store and follow package instructions.

5. Apple cider vinegar tea

Health benefit: blood sugar control
Apple cider vinegar has been used for just about anything. It can be used to eliminate blemishes or to lose weight, alongside many other things. It has been touted as a natural cure-all and perhaps one of its biggest perks is that it can lower blood sugar when consumed with starchy foods, making it a helpful tool for those managing type 2 diabetes. One drawback is that it's highly acidic and may possibly damage your tooth enamel. For this reason, it's best diluted with water, and preparing it as a tea.

Here's How: Combine and stir 1 cup warm water, 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and a dash of cayenne.
