5 Mindfulness Methods That Will Improve Your Wellbeing

Most of us tend to go through our daily routines in a similar manner every day. We are so used to this daily rhythm, to the point where our actions can become automatic – we can go through a whole day in that robotic fashion, following the same fixed orders our brain sends us. But shouldn’t you be the one in control of your mind rather than vice versa?

What is Mindfulness?

A good way to regain that control is by practicing mindfulness. This technique originates in Buddhism, and it started gaining popularity in the west by the late 1970s when it was incorporated in medical practices and mental health treatments. Nowadays, mindfulness programs are applied in schools, hospitals and even prisons around the world.

This list contains 5 moments in life in which mindfulness can be helpful, with practical tips on how to implement it.

1. Mindful Morning Routine – Set a Goal for the Day

When we get out of bed mindlessly in the morning, without a guiding thought or a specific goal for the day, we give our minds “permission” to operate through the subconscious. When that happens, our decision-making process is aimless and can feel random or meaningless. You can overcome that feeling by creating a mindful morning routine. Instead of checking your phone and your e-mails first thing in the morning, try to do the following:

1. When You Wake Up, Sit Up in Bed For a Few Moments – Close your eyes, and feel the sensation in your body when you’re sitting up. Feel the weight of your body and the softness of your bed. Make sure you are sitting up straight.

2. Take 3 Deep Breaths – Inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth. After that, let your breath take its natural course and listen to it. Pay attention to the movements happening in your body when you breathe – how your chest and abdomen rise and fall.

3. Ask Yourself ‘What Are My Intentions Today?’ – Think of the people you’re about to see today and the activities and tasks you will do. What are your intentions? Maybe leaving others with a positive impression of you? Or feeling more at ease in your interactions?

4. Set a Goal For the Rest of the Day – For example, “today I will be kind to myself, joyful and patient with those around me”.

5. Check on Yourself During the Day – Stop what you’re doing from time to time, take a breath and remind yourself of the goal you set in the morning.
Practicing these steps over time can lead to an overall improvement in your mood, and in your relationships.

2. Mindful Eating – Enjoy Every Bite

It’s easy to get distracted while eating and to get in a rhythm of just chewing and swallowing. However, eating is one of the most pleasurable moments in our day, and it would be a shame not to savor it fully. Eating mindfully will allow you to have a richer, more satisfying experience. Moreover, it’s a good way of controlling the quantity of food you consume, as each bite will become more meaningful and important in your mind. These are the steps for mindful eating:

1. Breathe Before Starting to Eat – Busy schedules make us go from one task to the next without taking a moment to breathe in between. Have that awareness in mind, and before you start your meal take a moment to breathe deeply, calm down, and let your body transition to a state of eating. Sit comfortably, slowly take 8-10 breaths and only then go on to the next stage.

2. Listen to Your Body - After breathing, gain awareness of your physical sensations, mainly in the stomach. Ask yourself ‘How hungry am I on a scale of 1-10?’ You might also ask why you’re hungry; is your stomach empty? Are you bored? Try not to think of the last time you ate and just listen to your physical sensations in the present moment.
3. Eat According to Your Hunger Level - Now that you are aware of your feeling of hunger and its reasons, you can choose better what and how much you want to eat.
4. Eat Calmly – Don’t try to finish the meal quickly. Eat slowly and breathe between bites.
5. If You Aren’t Enjoying, Don’t Force Yourself to Continue – During the first 3 bites, feel the taste and texture of the food and think of how much enjoyment you are getting from what you are consuming. If you find that you aren’t experiencing joy, simply stop eating. You will find that if you practice this step – even sweets sometimes become less appealing.

3. Fall Asleep Mindfully - Meditate for Better Sleep

Busier our lives, the harder it can get to fall asleep. A constant stream of thoughts and worries is washing over our minds as we try to unwind. Falling asleep mindfully, which has proven helpful to a large part of the population, is done through practicing meditation before bed.

1. Dim the Lights - You should do this as early as one hour before your planned sleep time. Lighting plays an important part in calming our thoughts.
2. Avoid Screens - Once you have deemed the lights, you can engage in a relaxing activity outside of your bed, but try not to look at any screens - phone, computer, or TV. The light they produce can keep you awake and alert.
3. Meditate - 10 minutes before bedtime, begin a focused mindfulness exercise. If you are new to meditation, there are many great apps to help you get started.

4. Mindful Leisure Time – Rewire the Brain

Experts claim that about 95% of our daily actions are done on ‘autopilot’, in a process which is controlled by the ‘fast brain’. The neurotransmitters that control our repetitive habits do it with such efficiency, and that is what makes breaking a habit (e.g. smoking) difficult. Mindfulness is the exact opposite of automatically giving in to habits, and when we practice it, we put our ‘slow brain’ to use.

The more you practice, the stronger the sense of control over the mind becomes, and new habits can form. But there is one problem. While our ‘slow brain’ is doing the work, the ‘fast brain’ is still trying to get us to take shortcuts. To remind ourselves that we’re the ones in power over our minds we can take a number of steps:
1. Create a Motivating Environment – If one of your goals for the day is to stretch instead of sitting on the couch watching TV, place your workout mat in the middle of the living room. It will remind you of your decision, and invite you to take action.

2. Mix Up Your Motivation Methods - The previous tip might work for a week or so. After that the ‘fast brain’ will prompt you to go back to your old habits, and caving to it will be harder to resist. Therefore, you need to freshen up the ways in which you motivate yourself to take action. For example, instead of placing the mat in the living room, stick a note on the TV screen saying ’10 minutes of stretches’.
3. Intentionally Create New Patterns of Thinking - Create a new thought pattern using the ‘X means Y’ model. For example, if you want to be more relaxed and happy when you get home from work, repeat the mantra ‘Coming in through the door means a smile’. If you’re nervous about making phone calls, repeat ‘phone calls mean deep breaths’. This intentional conditioning will help you be more aware of your actions and behaviors, by using the ‘slow brain’.

5. Mindful Driving – Stay Calm On the Road

There is nothing more irritating than being stuck in traffic. The thought of being late for work, or just stuck for hours initiates our ‘fight or flight’ response. Some of us feel like we’re ‘going crazy’ on the road, and say or do things that we wouldn’t have said or done normally. The worse the traffic jam is, the higher the stress level. It may not look like it, but that is actually the perfect time to try a few mindfulness techniques, that might help balance your mood and change your perspective on your current situation.

1. First of All, Take a Deep Breath – It might sound corny and simplistic, but inhaling oxygen into your body does help to reduce stress levels. While you breathe, remind yourself that the choice is yours, and you choose to stay calm.
2. Ask Yourself What You Need – If you need to regain your composure, try to notice exactly how you feel in each part of your body and find the parts that are tense. If it is a feeling of security that you need, remind yourself that even if you’re late for work, everything will be alright. If you’re 15 minutes late you can stay an extra 15 minutes at the end of the day – every problem has a solution.
3. Look Around at Other Drivers – Everyone on the road wants to feel safe and calm, but not everyone manages to do so. Try to find a driver that feels the same way as you, to understand how a stressed driver looks like from the outside. You might find people who manage road stress by singing in the car or even smiling. When you spot them, you will instantly feel better.

FDA Approves Endobronchial Valves for Severe Emphysema

The US FDA has approved the Zephyr Endobronchial Valve System for treating severe emphysema patients, according to manufacturer Pulmonx Corp.

The Pulmonx Zephyr Endobronchial Valves are implantable bronchial valves indicated for the bronchoscopic treatment of adult patients with hyperinflation associated with severe emphysema in regions of the lung that have little to no collateral ventilation.

Zephyr is the first minimally-invasive device approved in the United States for treating patients with severe emphysema, a progressive and life-threatening form of COPD.

The approval is based on positive clinical data from the pivotal LIBERATE Study and two other multicenter randomized control trials. In the LIBERATE study, patients treated with Zephyr Valves were able to breathe easier, be more active and energetic, be less short of breath, and enjoy a significantly improved quality of life compared to patients who received medical management alone.

As stated in the Summary of Safety and Effectiveness Data, the FDA granted the Zephyr Valve an expedited review because it “represents a breakthrough technology as the device offers bronchoscopic lung volume reduction without surgery and its associated risks. This device offers significant clinically meaningful advantage over the current standard of care and, therefore, its availability is also in the best interest of patients.”

“Zephyr Valves are a major step forward in treating severe emphysema patients who consistently feel short of breath despite all the medications we can offer. I have seen Zephyr Valve-treated patients getting back to a more active life doing the things they enjoy. As a physician, it is very gratifying to have a new treatment that can restore a patient’s confidence and change their life for the long term,” said Gerard Criner, MD, FACP, FACCP, Chair and Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery, Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, and lead investigator for the LIBERATE Study.

More than 15 million Americans suffer from COPD, and 3.5 million of those patients have emphysema. Despite using COPD medications, over one million emphysema patients continue to suffer symptoms of hyperinflation, in which air becomes trapped in the lungs and prevents new air from coming in, causing severe shortness of breath. The inability to get enough air often prevents these patients from doing simple daily activities, such as bathing, getting dressed, performing household chores and walking, without pausing to catch their breath. Until now, the only other options for these patients were highly invasive treatments such as lung volume reduction surgery or lung transplantation.

During a bronchoscopic procedure requiring no cutting or incisions, tiny Zephyr Valves are placed in the airways to occlude a diseased part of the lungs and reduce hyperinflation. This helps the healthier parts of the lungs to expand and lifts pressure off the diaphragm, thereby decreasing shortness of breath and making breathing easier.

Patients most likely to benefit from Zephyr Valve treatment can be identified with assessment tools also offered by Pulmonx.  Physicians use the Pulmonx Chartis Pulmonary Assessment System and StratX Lung Analysis Platform to help identify potential responders to Zephyr Valve treatment.

Since 2007, more than 14,000 patients have been treated with the Zephyr Valve worldwide. Zephyr Valve treatment is included in emphysema treatment guidance issued by leading health organizations worldwide, including the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) and the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

Quit smoking, adopt cardio exercises: These healthy habits help you breathe better

By following certain healthy habits, you can ensure that your lungs are performing well, and keep the oxygen flowing through the body.

Here are five habits that will help you improve your lung health.

Exercise: Your lungs are often working at half capacity because there is no reason for them to work at their full potential. But if you exercise, it pushes your heart to beat faster and makes your lungs work better. Do exercises that will make you breathe fast to ensure healthy lungs.

Stop or avoid smoking: Smoking is the biggest danger for your lungs. It reduces lung function and is also linked to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Cigarettes also contain chemicals that inflame and damage the lungs, and may even lead to lung cancer.

Eat right: The best foods for your lungs include fish rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, apples, walnuts, and berries. Drink adequate water to hydrate the organ.

Avoid exposure to pollution: Air pollution damages the lungs and can make it prone to infections and diseases. To stay safe, avoid inhaling exhaust fumes and second-hand smoke. Ensure your home is a smoke- and dust-free zone.

Benefits of spices: Curcumin, in turmeric, has been shown to be beneficial in inhibiting tumour growth in lung cancer, and has anti-inflammatory properties.

It’s not “Just Asthma”: Asthma and its Impact on Quality of Life

We conducted a large survey of people living with asthma where we asked questions about their diagnosis, medications, and treatments, and how asthma impacts one’s quality of life. The survey revealed to us that asthma is not just about taking your inhaler and is a complex condition where major aspects of one’s life are impacted by it.

For many people, asthma symptoms can be ever-present. While some asthma symptoms can be invisible like fatigue and exhaustion from constantly trying to breathe easier, other symptoms like shortness of breath can be straight-up be scary. And so many of our community members have shared with us experiencing chronic cough which those who don’t live with asthma mistake as the contagious kind of cough.

Asthma symptoms are not only annoying but impact one’s day to day life too. Those living with asthma report that various aspects of their lives are impacted by it, including, but not limited to their physical and emotional well-being. Many people who don’t live with asthma are unaware of the profound impact asthma can have on one’s quality of life, including sleep.

It is not only difficult to identify asthma triggers, but also very tough and sometimes simply impossible for people to change their living situation or environment to control the triggers that cause their symptoms to exacerbate.

There is a common misconception among those who don’t live with asthma that it is “easy to manage”. People think one just has to “take the inhaler” and it’s done. But managing control medications, rescue inhalers, avoiding triggers, dealing with asthma attacks and exacerbation, dealing with hospitalization due to asthma episodes, growing old with asthma and what that entails, are only some of the things that put a significant burden of disease management for those who live with this condition.

All in all, living with asthma impacts all aspects of one’s life. Awareness about this aspect of asthma is key in order to fully support those who grapple with this diagnosis and management.

I can tell you, for others, Oh, just asthma, only those who have it know what we go through. As now, I've graduated to COPD !, people don't mistake it for NYPD /LAPD !

5 Acupressure Points for Neck Pain

Do you suffer from neck pain? Muscle tension and back strain may be the cause. The worn joints and broken down cartilage can also be a factor. Neck pain usually centers on one location in your neck, but it can also be dispersed. This kind of pain can result in stiffness or spasms. So, what can we do to help ease the pain? For centuries, people have resorted to reflexology and acupressure to relieve neck pain. Acupressure focuses on points on your body that can be massaged and stimulated to relieve health conditions, Treating neck pain with reflexology is currently being evaluated for its effectiveness, Nevertheless, evidence suggests it works for some people. Below, you'll discover how pressure points might relieve your neck pain.

neck pain

The science behind pressure points and neck pain
Acupuncture has been studied extensively for its treatment for neck pain. Some evidence indicates that acupuncture does indeed work for neck pain, though acupressure is not universally accepted as a neck pain treatment. Researchers, however, do wonder if the needles in acupuncture stimulate chemicals in your body that provide pain relief. However, it's not to say that acupressure should be ruled out as a holistic neck pain treatment. And it is believed that stimulating pressure points may relieve neck pain and soothe aching muscles.
Pressure points for neck pain
Try acupressure for neck pain relief by following these steps:
1. Relax and breathe in deeply, being mindful to choose a comfortable and quiet setting to practice acupressure treatment.
2. Use a firm, deep pressure to massage the points which you have identified (see below) to soothe your neck pain. Bear in mind that it is best to rotate your fingers in a circular or up-and-down motion for 3-4 minutes at each point. If you feel a sharp intense pain anywhere on the body, stop right away.
3. Repeat the massage treatment throughout the day, if you feel that the pressure points have been effective.

Take note of the following pressure points:
1. Jian Jing (GB21)
This point is located in the muscles of the shoulders, about halfway between your neck and where your arms behind. This point has been extensively studied in acupuncture for headaches and muscle tension. It may also successfully treat the pain of a sore or stiff neck. Be aware that stimulating this point may induce labor and should, therefore, be avoided during pregnancy.
2. He Gu (L14)
This point is on the 'web' fold of the skin between your thumb and forefinger. According to reflexologists, stimulating this point can relieve pain in many different parts of the body, including the neck. Once again, stimulating this point should be avoided during pregnancy.
3. Wind Pool (Feng Chi/GB20)
The Feng Chi point is behind your earlobe, toward the top of your neck and the base of your skull. This point is used to treat everything from fatigue to a headache. Stimulating this pressure point will also improve a stiff neck caused by sleeping in an uncomfortable position.
4. Zhong Zu (TE3)
This point is located between the knuckles above your pinky and ring fingers. This pressure point may stimulate different parts of your brain when it's activated, promoting circulation and tension release. You can stimulate this point to relieve neck pain that is caused by tension or stress.
5. Heaven’s Pillar
This point is found on either side of your neck at the base of your skull. It is about two inches away from the top of where your backbone begins, right above your shoulders. Stimulating this point may help release congestion and swollen lymph nodes that can cause a sore neck.
Acupressure and reflexology can complement other effective neck pain relief home remedies. You can use a warm compress, stretch, and even over-the-counter pain relief in addition to this. Normally, rest and self-care are sufficient and most neck pain tends to resolve on its own within a day or tow. However, recurring neck pain could indicate an issue with your sleeping arrangements or the amount of stress in your life. It could be a result of doing exercises incorrectly. If your neck pain is a result of an injury or a car accident, get the care you need from a physician and physical therapist.
