6. Ginger:  If you do not find raw ginger to be very pungent, you can keep a candied ginger slice in your mouth for instant relief from acidity.  If you feel that you wouldn’t be able to chew raw ginger, you can boil it in water and drink it after it cools down.  Ginger can be also eaten with a small piece of jaggery to help the juice reach the stomach and alleviate the acidity.

Health Benefits Of Mint

1. Soothes Nausea
Whenever you are feeling nauseous, chew on some mint. Its powerful smell can alleviate stomachaches and sooth headaches. To reap the benefits, crush up and chew on some mint leaves, smell a mint-flavored product, chew on some mint flavored gum or apply essential oil where needed.

 2. Clears up Congestion
Mint contains menthol, which helps clear the sinus cavities. It also contains an anti-inflammatory agent, rosmarinic acid, which helps fight allergy symptoms. To clear your sinuses, drink peppermint tea or inhale the aroma of peppermint.

3. Prevents Acne

Mint also contains vitamin A, which helps control excessive oil production. The antioxidants found in mint will help keep your skin healthy, clear and free from bacteria. You can apply mint to the skin topically, either as a paste or combined with other skin-boosting ingredients like cucumber or lemon juice.

4. Improves Oral Hygiene

One of mint's well-known benefits lies in its ability to fight germs and mask smells. Opt for a toothpaste that contains mint and you can also swill a little bit of peppermint or spearmint oil (combined with water) in your mouth, killing any bacteria and leaving your breath incredibly fresh.

5. Provides Powerful Antioxidants

In comparison to other food, mint ranks pretty high in terms of antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help destroy free radicals that can develop a host of illnesses if left untreated. Ingesting mint can therefore be rather beneficial for your health. Mint can be safely ingested in many ways. Add it to your water, teas or use it to flavor your food.

6. Aids Digestion

For a healthy digestive process, eating or smelling mint is enough to activate the salivary glands in your mouth. Eat mint before or during a big meal to cleanse the palette and prepare the body for digestion later on.

 7. Reduces the Effects of Breastfeeding
Very often, women can suffer from mild skin damage during breastfeeding - this can include chapping, cracking or pain around the nipples. Alleviate the symptoms by rubbing some mint oil (combined with a carrier oil, such as olive oil) around the area to soothe the pain. Its anti-inflammatory properties can also heal the damage.

8. Promotes Weight Loss

The digestive enzymes found in mint can promote a more consistent, properly functioning metabolism, which in turn can lead to weight loss and an overall healthier physique.

 9. Boosts Mood and Fatigue
Mint is a stimulant that can help recharge brain function. The menthol found in mint is also known to have a calming, soothing effect on the body and mind. To reap the benefits, take sips of mint tea or inhale its scent to help you feel calm and less agitated.

Remedies To Get Rid Of Acidity

Over eating or spicy food gives us regular or once-in-a-while acidity. While we all love to indulge in good food, at times, we are forced to abstain for fear of the acidic reaction that follows.

Follow these simple home remedies which can cure and help combat acidity.

1) Cold milk - milk has calcium which stops acid build up in the stomach. For immediate relief from acidity, it is advised to drink a glass of cold milk.

2) Fennel Seeds - if you have had a spicy or a heavy meal, chew on some fennel seeds as is the habit in india, traditionally.

3) Ginger - ginger has anti-inflammatory properties which help cure acidity. All that one needs to do is chew on a slice of ginger. If you have a chronic acidity problem, you can make it a habit to drink the water with ginger boiled in it.

4) Cloves - if you face problems with acidity regularly, it is advisable to carry cloves with you at all times. Chew a few cloves everytime you feel acidic.

5) Basil Leaves - chew basil leaves at the first sign of acidity. Alternatively, you can also boil 3-5 leaves in a cup of water for a few minutes. Drink this water for relief. While you can add honey for taste, do not add milk.

6) Cinnamon - boil half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder in a cup of water for a few minutes and drink it throughout the day.

7) Buttermilk - lactic acid in buttermilk helps dilute the acidity in your stomach. Drink chilled buttermilk bit by bit throughout the day or until you get relief.

8) Cardamom - cardamom is known to sooth the inner lining of our stomach to reduce the effects of excess acid produced in the stomach. You can crush a couple of cardamom pods, boil in water, and drink it for instant relief.

9) Mint Leaves - mint leaves help digestion and in lowering the acid content in our stomach. Boil some chopped mint leaves in water, cool the water and drink it.

7 easy ways to counter side effects of antibiotics

There are times when it becomes unavoidable to take antibiotics. While these may cure you of your diseases, they leave you with nasty side effects like bloating, belching, gas, constipation and diarrhea. As the very name antibiotics suggests, it kills bacteria. Unfortunately, it also kills friendly bacteria which are so very valuable for your health.

One to two kg of friendly bacteria and yeast are present in your intestines. The friendly bacteria not only aid in digestion but also lend a helping hand in manufacturing B vitamins. Not only that, these keep the omnipresent yeast at bay, thus fighting infection. As a result of the intake of antibiotics, yeasts grow unchecked into large colonies, causing a condition called dysbiosis. These weaken your immune system.

Here are a few simple steps which can ease the situation considerably.

1. The first line of defence is cut out factors which forced you to take antibiotics in the first place. Quit smoking and drinking. Dump all soda. Put aside those chocolates, sugary and starchy foods. Also out are dairy products, fatty and spicy foods, tea and coffee.

2. Increase water intake. Don’t guzzle orange juice. Vitamin C is better obtained from oranges. Taking it through juices will only supply you excess sugar, which will rather worsen your condition.

3. Start taking probiotics in the shape of yoghurt on a regular basis, whenever you have a course of antibiotics. Probiotics must be continued long after the course has completed. Even otherwise, it is a good idea to make probiotics a regular part of your diet. Fermented foods like pickles, pickled turnips and carrots contain natural probiotics. That earthy Kanji that your grandmother used to make will be perfect during your post-antibiotic days.

4. Eat light, easily digestible food because your digestion will be in bad shape for several months after taking those tiny pills. Boil five mint leaves, an inch of ginger and about half a teaspoon of Ajwain (carom seeds or bishop’s weed) in a glass of water till the water is reduced to half. Drink half a glass thrice a day.

5. Light exercise is equally important. What matters is regularity.

6. Another wonderful remedy in your kitchen is garlic. Allicin present in it gets rid of the antibiotics in the body.

7. Vitamins A,C and E, zinc and selenium are a great help. Aloe vera juice protects intestinal lining. Make sure that you don’t get constipated. Psyllium husk and flax seed will not only aid in bowel movement but will also relieve diarrhea by absorbing excess water. Antibacterial oregano oil taken thrice a day provides considerable help.
