Here’s why children with autism lack applied behaviour analysis therapists for recommended treatment

As the number of cases suffering from autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasing, a recent study says how insufficient is the supply of certified applied behaviour analysis (ABA) providers to meet the needs of children with autism.

The study has found that there is substantial variation across states and regions. For instance, the per capita supply of certified ABA providers is substantially higher in the Northeast than in any other region in the USA.

The rising prevalence of ASD underscores the importance of access to evidence-based interventions such as ABA. An estimated one in 59 children had ASD in 2014, up from one in 125 a decade earlier, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

ABA uses behavioural learning principles to help children with ASD increase positive behaviours and social interactions and decrease problematic behaviours.

It is the recommended treatment for children with autism and is supported by more than 30 years of research. ABA is most effective when it is started at early childhood and the therapy is provided between 20 and 40 hours per week.

Study authors compared the per capita supply of certified ABA providers in each state with a benchmark established using the board’s guidelines.

They found that the per capita supply of certified ABA providers fell below the benchmark in 49 states. The supply was highest in the Northeast, which included the top seven states in the US based on per capita ABA providers.

In the Midwest, however, no state had more than one-third of the minimum number of ABA providers needed for the number of children with autism.

Early Warning Signs of A Child With Mental Health Problems

Around the world 10-20% of children and adolescents suffer from mental disorders. Half of all mental health diseases begin at age 14. If not treated, these conditions severely affect the growth of children, their educational attainment and their ability to live a productive and productive life. ~ WHO
Mental health disorder can be a terrible thing, regardless of age. Unlike adults, children often lack the awareness, coping abilities and resources to seek treatment.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that up to two in 10 children suffer from mental disorder. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the top five mental illnesses for children aged 3 to 17 are:

– Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): 6.8%
– Behavioral or personal disorder: 3.5%
– Anxiety: 3%
– Depression: 2.1%
– autism spectrum disorder and autism: 1.1%

Suicide, according to the CDC, “can result from the interaction of mental disorders and other factors.” Regarding, suicide is the second leading cause of death among teenagers.
Tends to have some commonalities among young people with mental health problems. As such, there are signs of mental health disorders in children and adolescents.
Here are some signs:
  1. They are more aggravated
Just like adults, children become stressed and aggravated. In most cases, child stress is caused by school or peer pressure; however, there may be a significantly intensified exacerbation of the underlying mental health disorder.

Children with mental disorders often make excuses not to go to school or study. Their nerves may cause headaches, stomach aches or any other pain. Children who seem to be aggravated and may have been plagued with bullying or other problems with their peers or peers.
With regard to this, bullying may have become the first issue facing school-age children today. As such, bullying poses a serious threat to the child’s mental health.

  1. They are increasingly concerned
Childhood is supposed to be a relatively important time in one’s life; so when a young child begins to exhibit disturbing behaviors, this may be cause for concern.
Here’s a typical story for a child with anxiety disorder:
“Every morning, she was worried that she would not take the bus on time, although she did not miss it once a year, and in every age, she was worried she would not get her favorite place at the lunch table, or she You may get a popular test in a science class and you will not be ready … ”
  1. It is dried or drop-down
According to the National Alliance of Mental Disorders, one out of every five teenagers suffers from a bout of depression; 8 percent suffer from severe depressive disorder (MDD).
Dr. Charles Rison, professor of psychiatry at the University of Arizona School of Medicine, offers his simple and direct advice: “I think you should start worrying … at any time there is enough change when you go,” my God, no ” themselves.”
Raison recommends that parents intervene if their child exhibits depressive behavior or withdraws for more than two to three weeks. It is also common for children with depression to experience drastic changes in sleep patterns.

4. Your child is having more difficulty at school.
5.Your child is hitting or bullying other children.
6. Your child is attempting to injure himself.
7.Your child is experiencing frequent mood swings.
8. Your child is experiencing intense emotions such as angry outbursts or extreme fear
9.Your child is lacking energy or motivation.
10. Your child is neglecting his or her appearance.
11. Your child is eating significantly more or less than usual

Autism spectrum disorder and diet

Every year, April 2 is observed as World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD), an event to raise public awareness about autism as well as highlight the needs to help and improve the lives of those affected by the developmental disorder. This year’s WAAD is focusing on leveraging the use of assistive technologies for persons with autism.

First discovered in the 1940s, autism is a serious disorder wherein a child has difficulty in communicating and his social skills are impaired. It is called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as the signs can be varied based on the severity of the condition. Indicators may appear by age of 2-3 years.
Experts say that early intervention can help improve communication skills and help in brain development so that the child can have a near-normal life later as an adult. Perhaps, there is convincing empirical evidence that dietary intervention can help many with autism.

Symptoms and causes of autism spectrum disorder

Few signs that a child might be autistic are - lack of eye contact, poor facial expressions, resists cuddling or holding, shows repetitive behaviour, doesn’t respond when his name is called out, is not able to express his feelings or understand other persons feeling, etc.

The exact cause of autism is not very clear as it may be associated with environmental and genetic factors - ranging from exposure to few drugs during pregnancy to genetic mutation.

Diet and Autism: What parents need to know

Children with autism may have a sensitive gut, inflammation, poor digestion, malabsorption, etc. It has been observed that children with autism have high peptide levels in the blood as compared to children without the disorder.

Generally, a gluten- and casein-free diet (GFCF) is highly recommended for people with autism, said a Nutritionist- Lifestyle and Weight Management Expert. Gluten-free means avoiding grains like wheat, oats, barley and their products in the diet. Instead, parents can give quinoa, rye, potato flour, rice, tapioca, etc. One can also make paratha, chelas, pancakes, porridge, pulav, dosa, etc out of these flours. You may also use them as a binding agent to make a patty out of vegetables.

A casein-free diet is a diet free of dairy products like milk, curd, cheese, drinks which are milk-based or supplements which have milk powder in them. The advice here is to read the label before giving anything to the child or better still cook and prepare food from scratch at home.

Another option is to substitute milk with almond milk, coconut milk, rice milk, etc. Packed milk contains carrageenans which can lead to inflammation, hence, one should try to prepare at home. There is clear advice of not using soya milk or products as soya is genetically modified and commonly have cross contamination. Also, parents need to avoid saturated fats and sugars as well apart from gluten and casein. Here are a few important diet tips for parents to follow.
  1. Be careful about cross contamination - e.g. using the same knife or spoon between GFCF and normal diet.
  2. Do not stock your kitchen with gluten-free products as most of them will be high in sugar. Honey can be a good substitute but that too in limited quantities.
  3. Let the child have as much as he wants to eat as long as it is within the allowed category.
  4. If possible, the whole family should turn to the same diet as it is easier to follow and avoid contamination.
  5. Avoid additives, colour, preservatives, hormones, etc in food.
  6. Food should be nutrient-dense as the child’s nutritive needs are higher than the counterpart.
It has been seen that if we eliminate grains and milk, there will be obvious nutritional deficiencies in children who are already poor eaters. So here the task is to give enough options and variety to the child with the main focus on fresh fruits and vegetables.

Training to coaches offers a means for helping children with autism

Ahead of World Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd, researchers have shown that training provided to the coaches offers a means for helping children with autism. A study to this effect has been published by researchers.

The reserchers ran a school-based multi-sports programme titled " Supporting Success" designed to help children with autism develop important life skills via regular organised sports. It helps children with autism develop important life skills via regular organised sports. Yet it does so by focusing on the child's environment instead of directing the intervention to the child itself.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental condition that can affect how a person communicates and interacts with the world around them. " Coaches play a paramount role in providing the ' right' environment for students with autism to enjoy and participate in sport. Yet the challenge is that they often feel unprepared to work in special settings, said one of the researchers.
Our research shows that there are specific tactics that coaches can use to encourage students with autism to more effectively participate in sports and physical activities, said a researcher. It can be done  by using visual cards to communicate, demonstrating activities before students have a go; using distinct coaching aids to familiarize students with sports  equipment, and various approaches for overcoming individual sensory challenges.

We're very pleased to hear that both parents and teachers are reporting great improvements in physical and interpersonal skills, concentration, and general calmness, as well as increased interests in new experiences, new friendships, and a general feeling of being more connected with the environment and community, she said. According to co-researcher, the findings show important it is to consider the world from the perspective of a child with ASD.

Many kids  struggle to process auditory commands which can make verbal instructions tricky, but add a visual cue card as a prompt or actively show them what they need to do, and it's a completely different story, " he said. " Similarly, we've found it effective to use plain words to describe activities. Instead of sports-specific lingo, like " Throw the cricket ball at the stumps", we're suggesting coaches use literal words, like ' throw the ball at the 3 sticks'. This was far more effective for kids with autism, especially when they're just learning about the sport, he added.

Digital medicine may help treat kids with autism, ADHD

The study confirmed the feasibility and safety of the tool called Project: EVO, which delivers sensory and motor stimuli through an action video game experience. As many as 50 per cent of children with ASD have some ADHD symptoms, with roughly 30 per cent receiving a secondary diagnosis of ADHD.

However, since ADHD medications are less effective in children with both disorders than in those with only ADHD, researchers are exploring alternative treatments. Children with ASD and ADHD symptoms are also at high risk for impaired "cognitive function," including the brain's ability to maintain attention and focus on goals while ignoring distractions. As children reach school age and beyond, these cognitive impairments make it more difficult for them to set and achieve goals, as well as successfully navigate the demands of day-to-day life in the community.

"Our study showed that children engaged with the Project: EVO treatment for the recommended amount of time, and that parents and children reported high rates of satisfaction with the treatment," said  a child psychologist. "Based on the promising study results, we look forward to continuing to evaluate the potential for Project: EVO as a new treatment option for children with ASD and ADHD," said the Prof.

The study included 19 children aged 9-13 diagnosed with ASD and co-occurring ADHD symptoms. Participants in the study were given either the Project: EVO treatment, which is delivered via an action video game experience, or an educational activity involving pattern recognition. Key secondary outcome measures were caregiver reports of ADHD symptoms and the ability of the child to plan and complete tasks, as well as a cognitive test battery assessing working memory.

The study found that children adhered to the treatment protocol by engaging with the treatment for 95 per cent or more of the recommended treatment sessions. Both parents and children reported that the treatment had value for improving a child's ability to pay attention and served as a worthwhile approach for treatment. The study also found that after using Project: EVO, children showed a trend toward improved attention, and they showed general ADHD symptom improvement based on parent reports. Though the sample size of the study was small, the study showed that using Project: EVO was feasible and acceptable with potentially therapeutic effects. The research team is planning a larger follow-up study for continued evaluation of Project: EVO's potential efficacy.

Altered mitochondrial DNA linked to autism

Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have greater numbers of harmful mutations in their mitochondrial DAN  (mDNA) than family members, US researchers have found.

Autism is a serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact.

Previous studies pointed out to the malfunctions in mitochondria -- the powerhouse of the cell -- as a major cause of ASD, however, the biological link was not established.

In the new study, the researchers discovered a unique pattern of heteroplasmic mutations, where both mutant and normal mDNA sequences exist in a single cell.

Children with ASD have more than twice as many potentially harmful mutations compared to unaffected siblings, and 1.5 times as many mutations that would alter the resulting protein.

"The result of our study synergises with recent work on ASD, calling attention to children diagnosed with ASD, who have one or more developmental abnormalities or related co-morbid clinical conditions for further testing on mDNA and mitochondrial function," said Zhenglong Gu of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Further, the study showed that these mutations can be inherited from the mother, or could be a result of spontaneous mutation during development.

Carrying harmful mutations in mDNA is also associated with increased risk of neurological and developmental problems among children with ASD, because mitochondria plays a central role in metabolism.

The risks are most pronounced in children with lower IQ and poor social behaviour compared to their unaffected siblings, the researchers said.

"Since many neurodevelopmental disorders and related childhood disorders show abnormalities that converge upon mitochondrial dysfunction, and may have mDNA defects as a common harbinger, future research is needed...," Gu noted.

For the study, published in the journal PLOS Genetics, the scientists analysed mDNA sequences from 903 children with ASD, along with their unaffected siblings and mothers.
