7 Natural Earache Remedies You Can Try at Home

If you or your child are prone to getting ear infections, you know how painful they can be. They can be triggered by many things, like wax build-up, moisture build-up and allergies, which lead to bacterial and viral infections. Luckily, they can be treated at home naturally, using historically proven remedies that are both safe, effective and have little to no side effects.

1. Castor or olive oil

Most ear infections occur due to wax build-up blocking the Eustachian tubes. Use a few drops of castor oil in the infected ear (remember to heat it up a little) before going to bed. Put a cotton plug in your ear and sleep on your side with the ear facing up. In the morning, clean your ear with a cotton swab (Repeat for a week). The warm oil helps to melt the obstructing wax.

2. Garlic

Known for its anti-bacterial properties, garlic is great for treating ear infections. Cook halved cloves of garlic in sesame or mustard oil on low heat, strain the oil and allow to cool. Pour a little bit into the infected ear and see how quickly you feel better.
3. Onion

Warm the onion in the oven and strain the juice, the put a few drops in the infected ear and tilt your head to allow the liquid to pour out. You can add a warm compress to the treatment - it will draw out the infection.
4. Steam

Put a few drops of tea tree oil and an equal measure of eucalyptus oil in a bowl of boiling water, place your head over the bowl and cover your head with a towel. This is highly effective at treating infections caused by blockage. To increase the effectiveness of the treatment, plug your ear with some cotton – this will absorb more moisture and heat, and focus the treatment in the infected ear (If you don’t have either oil, just plain steam will also work).

5. Fresh holy basil (Tulasi)

The Tulasi has been used in India to treat ear infections for hundreds of years. Crush a few leaves and rub the juice around the ear and on it, but make sure not to get it in the ear canal.
6. Mango leaves

Fresh young mango leaves contain juices that are very effective at treating ear infections. Grind or crush them to get the juice, then warm it up. Use the warm juice as ear drops and you’ll feel a relief very quickly.
7. Salt

If you’re suffering from moisture build-up, this is the best method to relieve it. Heat up salt in a pan (or the microwave) for 5 minutes, then place it in a towel or some other thick cloth, and then close it into a ball. Let it cool down and apply the filled cloth ball to the ear. The salt will draw out and absorb the moisture in your ear.

Gastritis is an inflammation, irritation, or erosion of the stomach lining called gastric mucosa. The most common symptoms of the condition include nausea, vomiting and illness in the upper abdomen, right after having a meal. Heartburn, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, indigestion and bloating are other symptoms of gastritis.

Some reasons as to why people suffer from gastritis, there are four primary causes: infection of the stomach mucosa by the Helicobacter pylori bacteria, vitamin B12 deficiency, taking too many pain relievers or other anti-inflammatory drugs, and acidic and spicy foods and drinks.

Drinking too much of alcohol, old age  and people suffering from diseases and conditions like AIDS, Crohn’s disease and parasitic infections are at a higher risk of getting gastritis. Viral or fungal infections and stress can also be contributing factors.Mild cases of acute gastritis usually clear up within a few days. Plus, you can try simple home remedies along with lifestyle and diet modifications to prevent and control the problem.

Some ways to treat gastritis at home

6 Herbs That Can Prevent Risk of Cancer

Pilot studies conducted by AIIMS earlier found that Ayurvedic herbs helped reduce side effects in breast cancer patients who were undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Ayurveda sees health as a perfect balance between mind, body and consciousness. To achieve this it promulgates a  daily regimen of exercise , emotional balance and a healthy diet. This, in itself, is a great way to prevent the onset of many life style diseases.

Ayurveda recommends a number of herbs for preventing cancer and there is a growing body of scientific studies that backs this ancient knowledge. Here are some common herbs which are proven to have anti-cancer properties.

1. Amla( Indian gooseberry)
Amla is an Ayurvedic superfood. It is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C and also contains quercetin, phyllaemblic compounds, gallic acid, tannins, flavonoids, pectin and various polyphenolic compounds, making it the king of rejuvenation. Scientific research of three decades has proven the traditional use of amla to be correct. Laboratory trials of amla extracts have shown its ability to kill and prevent growth of cancer cells while not harming the healthy cells.

2. Garlic
Garlic contains sulphur, arginine, flavonoids and selenium. The bio-active compounds of garlic are formed from allicin when the bulb is chopped or crushed. The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), an ongoing multinational study across 10 countries has shown a positive co-relation between the consumption of garlic and onion and reduced risk of cancer. Studies from the US , China and France have all shown that consumption of  garlic is associated with lowered risk of cancer. Garlic is a known anti-bacterial agent with the ability to stop the formation (2) and activation of cancer causing agents. The World Health Organisation recommends at least 2-5 grams or one bulb of garlic daily for adults.

3. Turmeric
Haldi is one of the most researched herbs for its anti-cancer properties. It is attributed with anti-oxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic values. The principle component of turmeric is curcumin which is a potent antioxidant scavenging free radicals and inhibiting the growth of cancerous cells. Almost 2000 published scientific papers have shown that curcumin has the ability to kill cancer cells while not harming the healthy cells.

4. Ashwagandha
Also know as the Indian ginseng, it has been used to help the body deal with stress in Ayurveda. Its anti-cancer value was realized about 40 years ago when researchers isolated a crystalline steroidal compound (withaferin A) from this herb. Further research on these extracts which were taken from the leaf of ashwagandha showed that they were able to kill cancerous cells.

 5. Holy Basil
Commonly known as Tulsi in India, this sacred herb is known for its healing powers. It is used for improving immunity and fighting stress. Research has shown that it also possesses anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-diabetic and anti-stress properties. Studies have shown that the phytochemicals present in tulsi prevented chemically induced lung, liver, oral and skin cancers by increasing the antioxidant activity, altering gene expressions, killing cancer cells and preventing the spread of cancer to other cells.

6. Ginger
Ginger has a 2000-year long history of medicinal use. The active constituents of ginger have potent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and some have exhibited cancer preventive activity in experimental models. Today, there are a number of studies that point towards the cancer preventive effect of ginger. In a study conducted by the University of Michigan, ginger caused ovarian cancer cells to die. Another study, published in Cancer Prevention Research, showed decreased inflammation of the colon.

While scientific research continues to dig deeper into the prevention and cure of cancer given its growing menace, you should take all precautions to safeguard yourself. Be active and eat well. The healthier you live, the less risk you’re at. If you have a positive family history, sign up for regular checks-up. Earlier detection of cancer makes it easier to treat.
