5 reasons why you feel bloated while travelling

Digestion problems while traveling are extremely uncomfortable, but also surprisingly common, with an estimated 30-70% of international tourists reportedly suffering from traveler’s diarrhea alone. However, the fact that digestive issues like constipation, diarrhea and bloating are very common among tourists doesn’t mean that they’re unavoidable or normal. As a matter of fact, the majority of these issues arise due to almost trivial changes in dietary habits most of us don’t even realize are causing the issue. Let’s look at 5 major reasons for traveler’s bloating in particular and learn to prevent it once and for all.

1. Chewing Gum
Many people resort to chewing gum when they're on a plane, as it seems like a miracle fix capable of relieving both blocked ears and a dry mouth. And while chewing gum may make you feel better while you're flying, it may also be doing something a lot less beneficial to your system.
Namely, the very act of chewing gum inadvertently also makes you swallow a lot of air, and guess what happens to it after it reaches your stomach? That's right, it is bound to end up in your bowels, causing bloating and excessive wind. To prevent this from happening, avoid gum or reserve it to takeoff and landing when your ears are the most prone to getting blocked up.

2. Ultra Processed Foods
While we're on the go and luggage space is strictly limited, packing a salad or any other wholesome meal becomes quite difficult. As a result, we often resort to packaged snacks, such as chips and cookies to keep us full, and that's exactly the main mistake.
Unfortunately, most of these snacks, especially those you can pick up at a convenience store on your way from point A to point B, are highly processed and full of simple carbs and sugars that are bound to cause bloating. Apart from that, these foods are often also very dry, so they can bring about constipation as well, just so you know.
So instead of packing unhealthy snacks, develop the habit of taking nuts, dried fruit, fresh veggies, and fruit with you on your journey. If you insist on packaged goods, sugar-free energy bars are also a good option.

3. Dehydration
Speaking of habits that can cause both bloating and constipation, let's discuss your water intake. We're sure that you all know that you should be drinking your 6 glasses of liquids a day, but the thing is, many people seem to leave that knowledge at home when they set off on their travels.
Not drinking enough will affect your health even in the short term, especially if you're traveling by plane where the air is a lot dryer, to begin with. To prevent dehydration, drink as much and as often as you can. You can also pack a water bottle with you to keep better track of your daily water intake.

4. Low Fiber Intake
Fiber is probably the most underestimated essential part of our diet, but it is necessary for you on the daily, much like water and other nutrients. Sorry for the slightly graphic imagery, but fiber is important because it creates the bulk of your bowel movement and acts as food for your gut microbiome, so it's essential for smooth digestion if you know what we mean.
To make sure you get enough fiber, make sure to include fruit and veggies, as well as nuts and whole grains in your diet on a daily basis.

5. Caffeinated and Carbonated Drinks
Another common mistake most of us make while we travel is drinking carbonated and caffeinated beverages, as these are usually very easy to find in the nearest vending machine. Still, we'd advise you to stay away from these drinks while you're traveling, as they can cause bloating as well, despite promising to hydrate you as well as water does.

Caffeinated beverages can be the culprit behind bloating because they overexcite the digestive system and are actually quite dehydrating, whereas carbonated beverages pump your stomach full carbon dioxide, which is also bound to result in a bloated stomach, too. To prevent this from happening, avoid all carbonated drinks, even sparkling water, and don't get crazy with caffeine either. During your travels, tea and water are your two best friends.

The Connection Between Your Appendix and Parkinson's

Scientists have discovered a new clue that Parkinson's disease may get its start not in the brain, but in the gut - and possibly in the appendix. It was found that people who had their appendix removed early in life had a lower risk of getting the tremor-inducing brain disease decades later.

The appendix, which is often considered to be useless, seems to be a storage depot for an abnormal protein. Which, if it somehow makes its way into the brain, becomes a hallmark of Parkinson's. But, before you do go rushing to a surgeon, a neuroscientist and geneticist who led the research team, stressed: "we're not saying to go out and get an appendectomy." Furthermore, there are plenty of people who have no appendix yet still develop Parkinson's. In addition, plenty of others harbor the protein but never get sick.

Understanding the gut connection
Doctors and patients have long suspected a connection between the gastrointestinal tract and Parkinson's. It was also noticed that constipation and other GI troubles are very common for a number of years before patients experience tremors and movement difficulty that lead to a Parkinson's diagnosis.

A Parkinson's specialist , who wasn't part of the study, but has many of her patients ask about the gut link says "This is a great piece of the puzzle. It is a fundamental clue."

A chief scientific officer, who too wasn't involved agreed that "there's a lot of tantalizing potential connections." Furthermore, he noted that despite its reputation, the appendix appears to play a role in immunity which may influence gut inflammation. In addition, the type of gut bacteria that live in the gut may also affect Parkinson's.

However, if it truly is common to harbor that Parkinson's-linked protein, "what we don't know is what starts it, what gets this whole ball rolling," the Dr. says.

Scientists have for many years hypothesized about what might cause the gut-Parkinson's connection. One main theory included the possibility of bad "alpha-synuclein" protein which can travel from nerve fibers in the GI tract up the vagus nerve. This connects the body's major organs to the brain. Abnormal alpha-synuclein is toxic to brain cells involved with movement. There have also been other clues. Decades ago, people who have had their vagus nerve cut as part of a now-abandoned therapy had a reduced risk of Parkinson's. Smaller studies have suggested appendectomies, too, might be protective - but the results were conflicting.

Consequently, the team set out to find stronger evidence. Firstly, the researchers analyzed Sweden's national health database. They examined medical records of nearly 1.7 million people tracked since 1964. It was discovered that the risk of Parkinson's was 19% lower among those who had their appendix surgically removed decades earlier. What was found to be puzzling was that people living in rural areas appeared to get the benefit. The Dr. said that it is possible that the appendix plays a role in environmental risk factors for Parkinson's, including pesticide exposure. In addition, further analysis suggested that people who developed Parkinson's despite an early-in-life appendectomy tended to have symptoms appear a few years later than similarly aged patients.

A common protein
A Dr. who wasn't involved in the research says that kind of study doesn't prove that removing the appendix is what reduces the risk. Consequently, the team examined tissue from 48 Parkinson's-free people. It was found that in 46 of them, the appendix harbored the abnormal Parkinson's-linked protein. So did some Parkinson's patients. Whether the appendix was inflamed or not also did not affect their findings.

This is a crucial finding because it means merely harboring the protein in the gut isn't enough to trigger Parkinson's, the Dr. said. There has to be another step that makes it dangerous only for certain people. She says, "the difference we think is how you manage this pathology," she said, about how the body handles the buildup.

Her team plans additional studies. The findings are compelling , however, another key question is if the abnormal protein collects in healthy people's intestines. In addition, a Dr. adds another caution: There are other unrelated risks for Parkinson's disease, this includes suffering a traumatic brain injury. "This could be one of many avenues that lead to Parkinson's disease, but it's a very exciting one," she said.

5 Effective Techniques for Correct Time Management

Even the most organized people sometimes find themselves in situations where they have to solve problems and perform various tasks in a very short period of time. You can try to get things done as fast as possible, but in most cases, there are no actual shortcuts and all rushing leaves you with more stress and problems you need to fix. You can solve most of these problems if you only learn how to manage your time correctly, and here are 5 proven methods that help you do so with surprising efficiency, especially if you use them all together.

1. Life balance wheel

First, you need to know how to best prioritize your tasks, and then you can build a schedule to help you accomplish all your goals. To do this you may want to create a life balance wheel, divided into 8 categories. Each category is another area that is important in your life and requires responsibility and control. It is likely that your life balance wheel will look different from that of another person since each of us has different goals in life.
Some areas that you could put in the wheel are a happy family, financial stability, career success, improving a certain skill, improving health, weight control, traveling around the world, spending time with friends, spiritual development or anything else that matters to you.

Each part of the wheel is divided into 5 segments, which symbolize your level of satisfaction with your success in that field. Your goal is to analyze your life balance wheel honestly and rank each area with a score of 1 to 5, where 1 is dissatisfaction and 5 is total satisfaction. The areas where you experience the least satisfaction are those that require your primary attention, and you have to invest more in them over other areas.
Do not limit yourself to achieving your goals, instead, be aware of the results you expect, because it will give you more motivation to achieve them. Every goal must also be realistic and you should set milestones for each of them - for this, the last method on this list will help you a lot.

2. The Eisenhower Matrix

Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th president of the United States, was considered one of the country's finest leaders who knew how to best manage their time, and was known to have effectively controlled several areas of his life at the same time. How did he do this? Eisenhower used to divide a page into 4 parts, giving each a different title:
  • Upper right: urgent and unimportant
  • Upper left part: urgent but important
  • Lower right part: not urgent and unimportant
  • Lower left part: not urgent but important

  • In the upper left category (urgent and important) are usually all the things you haven’t had time to do but need to get done today. If you use this list daily, this part should remain blank most of the time.
  • The top right category (urgent but unimportant) is the most important because you need to know how to divide your time correctly and the next method on the list can help you with this greatly. However, the tasks here should not be done in haste, because if you do this they can easily move to the top left (urgent and important) when you don’t do them correctly.
  • The lower left category (not urgent but important) usually includes phone calls that you don’t want to make, meetings that you need to schedule or anything else that can be postponed to another time.
  • The lower right category (not urgent and unimportant) includes tasks that even if left undone, won’t affect you too much.
Make this list daily, and it will help you know exactly what you need to do, when and how much time you need to spend on each task or whether you can postpone it for another time.

3. The tomato method

The goal of this method is to set deadlines for completing tasks, and it helps complete more tasks in a short time. In this method, the "tomato" is a piece of time that includes 25 minutes of work and 5 minutes of break. Work until you complete your task, and after 4 "tomatoes" allow yourself to enjoy a longer break of 15-20 minutes.
This method is especially helpful in preventing distractions because you spend time also on things that are not necessarily related to your main task. Additionally, if you think about how many "tomatoes" you did each day, you can slowly learn to plan your time with "tomatoes" every day.

4. Eat the frog first

This method was inspired by Mark Twain, who used to say with amusement: " If you eat a frog in the morning, you can live all day with the feeling that it won’t be worse." Meaning do the hard stuff first! Then, any other task will be much easier for you to perform, and it is important to remember that the more you postpone a difficult task the more you’ll feel stressed about it. When you work with this method you will experience much less stress throughout the day.

5. Benjamin Franklin’s method - the pyramid of productivity

This method was developed by Benjamin Franklin, and he developed it at the age of 20. Today it is also known as the "pyramid of productivity" and is particularly effective for goals that require long-term investment. You need to spend time planning your goals and ways to achieve them, and after doing so you will have a clear path on which you can fulfill any dream and ambition.
time management graphics
  • In the first stage, you must understand what your values and aspirations are so that you know what really matters to you.
  • In the second stage, you must set an achievable goal for your life that can be reached within the specified time. So, ask yourself, "What do I want to achieve in the next X years?"
Each step is then devoted to planning the path to achieving the goal:
  • General planning - detailed instructions for achieving the goal in general
  • Long-term – steps for 3-5 years
  • Short-term - steps for the month/year (1-12 months)
  • Top step - steps for every day or week
Once you’ve written instructions for each time span, you will have a lot more motivation to achieve your goal, because you already know exactly what you need to do and when to finish each stage - sometimes lack of planning is what lowers motivation, but clear tasks help you know what steps need to be taken, and for the most part they also seem less threatening as a result.
