The Benefits of Drinking Sugar Water

It has been proven that carbohydrates help to boost athletic performance and maximize endurance, which is why there are so many energy bars and drinks readily available at gyms and sports shops. But, what about plain and simple sugar water? We’re about to reveal the surprising effects that sugar water has on our bodies.

According to the experts, we often get our daily sugar fix from soft drinks and fruit drinks, but these sources are not always the best choice for our bodies.
Below we’ll explain what happens to our bodies when we consume sugar water and how it benefits us.

Sugar Water Gives our Bodies a Quick Energy Boost
We all know that having too much sugar in our diets is bad for us. While it’s very true that nutritionists recommend that we get only around 10% of our daily calorie intake from sugars, there are times when our bodies demand an immediate energy boost
•  When we consume sugar water, our bodies absorb the sugar molecules into the bloodstream, where they are then taken by our cells and converted into energy.
•  Sucrose, the sugar molecule which is found in most store-bought table sugars, has been found to have a faster absorption rate than any other type of sugar.
Research has shown that the relatively simple components of sugar water could be a better energy source than store-bought sweetened drinks.

What is Sugar Water Made of?
Sugar water can be easily made by stirring table sugar into a glass of water. However, the sugar that we use at home is different from the sugars used in other sweetened drinks.
•  Sugar water contains sucrose, while other sweetened beverages contain glucose in combination with other sugars (corn starch syrup and fructose, to name but a couple).
•  Sucrose is a disaccharide which is made up of 2 sugar molecules, glucose, and fructose.

A recent study shows that the way our bodies use sucrose is better and more efficient than other sugar molecules.
Why Sugar Water is Better than Other Sweetened Drinks
It would appear that energy drinks, fruit juices, and vitamin water all have the same basic components as sugar water, but that’s not true. There are significant differences between sugar water and other sweetened beverages:
• Sugar water contains sucrose, while other sweetened beverages contain glucose in combination with other sugars (corn starch syrup and fructose, to name but a couple).
• Sucrose is a disaccharide which is made up of 2 sugar molecules, glucose, and fructose.

Why Athletes Choose Sugar Water
While sugar water is good for everyone, there are many additional benefits for those who work our regularly or train professionally:
•  While all carbohydrates help to restore energy levels during exercise, it’s the rate at which energy is restored that truly makes a difference during an intense workout.
•  Most sports drinks contain combinations of glucose that can cause a lot of discomfort as they are absorbed by the intestines.
•  Scientists have found that athletes who consumed sugar water experienced a faster and smoother recovery than those who consumed energy drinks.

Therefore, if you’re running a marathon or simply need to feel at your best, it’s actually much better to substitute store-bought sugary drinks with a simple homemade sugar water.
When is the Best Time to Consume Sugar Water?
There are a number of situations where it’s not only healthy but necessary to boost your carbohydrate intake:
•  Before, during, and after a workout
•  During high-intensity activities such as biking, hiking, and rollerblading.
•  When you experience long gaps in between meals
•  Whenever you need a quick energy boost without the effects of feeling full
Recommended Sugar Water Intake
Sugar water, just like all sweet treats, is supposed to be consumed in moderation.
•  For endurance-based workouts such as cycling, it’s best to consume 7 tablespoons of sugar per hour. It’s recommended to mix roughly 1.5 tablespoons with a cup of water.
•  For less intense workouts, it might be wise to reduce the amount by half.
•  If you’re not doing any exercise and just need a quick pick me up throughout the day, it’s recommended to consume no more than 2 teaspoons of sugar per cup of water.

Some Amazing uses of Sugar

You thought sugar was only to sweeten your drinks, cookies and cakes, you'll be happy to know that they've some more uses too !

 1) Calms babies-pediatric studies have shown that babies who were given a solution containing one spoon of sugar and flour glasses of water before being vaccinated, reacted more calmly to shots than those that weren't.

2) Treat Wounds- A pinch os sugar may help heal many types of wounds, such as pressure wounds, ulcer, or cuts. Pour a little sugar on the wound to kill the bacteria in the area and relieve chronic local pain.

3) Treat a burnt tongue- sipping too quickly from a scalding coffee cup or biting into a steaming pizza are easy ways of burning your tongue. Put a little sugar on the burnt area for quick pain relief.

4) Clean dirty hands- when your hands are very dirty ( with paint or grease, for instance), you can use sugar to remove the hard stains. Add sugar to soap foam and give a good rub.

Beware Of added sugar in foods

Increased intake of food and drink with added sugar may possibly raise the risk of heart attack or myocardial infarction by about a third, in some people, a study has warned.

Although sucrose occurs naturally in fruit and vegetables, most of which is consumed through added inclusion.

Besides sweetened beverages, cakes and sweets, sucrose is added to many other foods -- dairy products, bread and jam, the study said.

"For the vast majority (of people), the consumption of added sugar does not appear to be a problem -- the risk of developing myocardial infarction or other serious heart disease," said Associate Professor Emily Sonestedt of Lund University in Sweden.

But, "among the five per cent of participants who got at least 15 per cent of their daily energy intake from  sucrose, the risk of myocardial infarction increased by about a third," Sonestedt added.

The results were adjusted for factors traditionally associated with cardiovascular diseases, including lifestyle, such as smoking, alcohol and exercise habits.

"There is currently very little indication that the prevalence of myocardial infarctions or other serious heart diseases would be reduced if those already following the sugar intake recommendations were to further limit the intake," Sonestedt said.

However, it was advisable to reach those whose consumption exceeds the current recommended level, and above all the major consumers of sweetened foods and drinks, through targeted initiatives, the researchers observed.

In the study, the team analysed more than 26,000 participants with no known diabetes or cardiovascular diseases.

Dietary consumption was also analysed and adjustments made for foods which are seen as linked to cardiovascular risk, such as meat, whole grains, fruit, vegetables and coffee.

The study appeared in the British Journal of Nutrition.
