Stress hormone controls your body clock 24/7

Stress hormone, and not neurons, manage the fixed circadian rhythm that controls everything from sleep needs to body temperature, the researchers have found.

Our internal clock is controlled by some very distinct hereditary genes, known as clock genes. These genes are particularly active in the so-called suprachiasmatic nucleus area of the brain.

However, these areas of the brain are not directly linked by neurons, and this made researchers at the University of Copenhagen curious.

Using lab tests, the team demonstrated that the circadian rhythm is controlled by the stress hormone, corticosterone.

"In humans, the hormone is known as cortisol, and although the sleep rhythm in rats is the opposite of ours, we basically have the same hormonal system," said Associate Professor.

In the study with the stress hormone corticosterone, the researchers removed the suprachiasmatic nucleus in a number of rats.

As expected, this removed the circadian rhythm of the animals.

However, the circadian rhythm of the cerebellum was restored when the rats were subsequently implanted with a special programmable micropump.

In this case, however, the researchers used the pump to emit doses of corticosterone at different times of the day and night, similar to the animals' natural rhythm.

"Nobody has used these pumps for anything like this before. So technically, we were onto something completely new," said the Asst. Prof.

With the artificial corticosterone supplement, researchers were again able to read a rhythmic activity of clock genes in the animals.

"This is interesting from a scientific point of view, because it means that we have two systems - the nervous system and the hormonal system - that communicate perfectly and influence one another, all in the course of a reasonably tight 24-hour programme," he elaborated.

The researchers now plans to study other rhythmic hormones in a similar manner, including hormones from the thyroid gland.

Scientists identify new cause of high blood pressure

Scientists have discovered a new cause of high blood pressure which could lead to better ways of managing the disorder.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, often goes unnoticed but if left untreated can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

However, it is known that in up to 10 per cent of hypertensive patients the overproduction of the adrenal hormone aldosterone - a condition known as primary aldosteronism or Conn syndrome - is the cause of disease.

Researchers, including those from University of Burmingham, in the UK, found that a large number of patients with Conn syndrome do not only overproduce aldosterone but also the stress hormone cortisol.

Scientists have decided to name this new cause of hypertension - the combined overproduction of aldosterone and cortisol - as Connshing syndrome.

At present, many Conn syndrome patients are treated with drugs that are directed against the adverse effects of aldosterone. However, this leaves the cortisol excess untreated, researchers said.

"Our findings show that the adrenal glands of many patients with Conn syndrome also produce too much cortisol, which finally explains puzzling results of previous studies in Conn patients," said Wiebke Arlt of University of Birmingham.

"These previous studies had found increased rates of type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and depression in Conn patients - problems typically caused by overproduction of cortisol, also termed Cushing syndrome, and not by too much aldosterone," Arlt said.

"These findings are very likely to change clinical practise," said Katharina Lang from University of Birmingham.

"Patients will now need to undergo more detailed assessment to clarify whether they suffer from Conn or Connshing syndrome," Lang said.

The study was published in the journal JCI Insight.

Pregnant women should avoid eating mulethi / liquorice

Eating large amounts of liquorice, commonly known as mulethi in India, during pregnancy may adversely affect the development of your child’s brain, a new study has warned.

In the study, youths that were exposed to large amounts of liquorice in the womb performed less well than others in cognitive reasoning tests carried out by a psychologist. The difference was equivalent to about seven IQ points.

Those exposed to liquorice also performed less well in tasks measuring memory capacity and according to parental estimates, they had more ADHD-type problems than others. With girls, puberty had started earlier and advanced further.

Researchers, including those from the University of Helsinki in Finland, compared 378 youths of about 13 years whose mothers had consumed “large amounts” or “little/no” liquorice during pregnancy.

In the study a large amount was defined as over 500 milligrammes (mg) and little/no as less than 249 mg glycyrrhizin per week.
These cutoffs are not based on health effects. 500 mg glycyrrhizin corresponds on average to 250 grammes liquorice.

Researchers suggest that pregnant women and women planning pregnancy should be informed of the harmful effects that products containing glycyrrhizin - such as liquorice and salty liquorice - may have on the foetus.

Glycyrrhizin is one of many factors that affect the development of a foetus but it is impossible to say whether it was glycyrrhizin expressly that affected the development of a certain individual.

As a result of animal experiments, the biological mechanism of the effects of liquorice is well known.

Glycyrrhizin intensifies the effects of stress hormone cortisol by inhibiting the enzyme that inactivates cortisol. While cortisol is essential to the development of a foetus, it is detrimental in large amounts.

It has long been known that glycyrrhizin causes higher blood pressure and shorter pregnancies in humans, but such long-lasting effects on the foetus have not been proven before.

The study was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Chamomile tea to battle gas

Nation Remedies
This is an old German remedy that now has science backing it up. Stanford University researchers found that sipping 2 glasses of chamomile tea a day can reduce that bloated feeling as well actual gasses in the digestion system.

The chamomile reduces the secretion of cortisol, a hormone secreted during times of stress and causes stomach cramps.
