7 Herbs and Supplements for Healthy Joints and Bones

As we grow older, our bones and muscles ache, our skin begins to sag and our hair becomes thinner. We accept these things as a natural byproduct of aging, but what actually causes them are internal processes by which certain substances that occur naturally in our bodies are produced at a lower rate, as well as oxidative stress. The most common expression of this deterioration occurs when the body fails to provide our bones and cartilage with their necessary building blocks, causing a breakdown of joints that is accompanied by severe pain and which can develop to motor disability.

But what happens if, instead of managing the aforementioned symptoms of aging, you take those same substances that your body has stopped producing as a supplement? Would that remedy the aches and pains you’ve been experiencing? Why, yes, it will.

In order to better familiarize yourself with these supplements, we’ve compiled seven of the supplements that are most effective in battling osteoarthritis, the most common joint disease in the world, caused by the wearing down of cartilage and bones.

By taking these supplements, not only will you be able to treat the symptoms of arthritis, you may be able to preempt it completely if it hasn’t developed yet, as the supplements help reinforce the structural integrity of your joints, even if arthritis is not present. This is of particular importance to people who are exercising regularly and putting stress on their joints.

Curcumin
Supplements: curcumin turmeric
Osteoarthritis, the most commonly occurring of all types of arthritis, occurs when there is wear and tear of the cartilage. When cartilage breaks down, the bones begin to rub against each other causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. Age, genes, metabolism, and mechanical and chemical factors are all leading causes of osteoarthritis. Thankfully, turmeric and its active ingredient curcumin can help to reduce inflammation and protect bone health in osteoarthritis sufferers.

Studies have found that a daily intake of turmeric can greatly benefit our breathing, digestion, blood flow, heart, and even our brains. Curcumin has strong anti-inflammation and anti-carcinogenic properties. It's amazing what just a teaspoon of turmeric, mixed with the right ingredients, can do. In supplement form, curcumin is far more concentrated than your everyday turmeric spice powder.

MSM
Despite the intimidating acronym, what MSM really is, is a natural sulfur compound that appears in some plants. MSM has a variety of health and beauty benefits which make it a popular supplement. MSM beauty appliances promote hair growth and protect the skin by strengthening the connective tissue in our skin and the keratin in our hair and nails. But more importantly, as a health supplement, MSM relieves joint pain such as that caused by osteoarthritis and reduces oxidative stress on the body which can cause cell damage and the formation of tumors.

Glucosamine Chondroitin
Supplements: Glucosamine Chondroitin cartilage
Rather than a single supplement, this mouthful is actually a pair of two active ingredients that complement each other in battling arthritis. Glucosamine and chondroitin help form cartilage, thus preventing joint deterioration, while chondroitin is also effective in reducing inflammation. These effects combine to relieve pain caused by osteoarthritis.

Though glucosamine is often derived from the chitin of shellfish, there does not appear to be any danger of severe reactions for those who suffer from shellfish allergies, and it is also possible to attain glucosamine that is not derived from shellfish.

ch-OSA
A fancy scientific name for silicon, as a supplement it has been found to have numerous benefits in those fields where beauty and health coincide. The silicon in ch-OSA supplements restores function and liveliness in skin tissue that has been damaged by the elements, as well as strengthens hair and nails. It has also been found to help bone formation in women who suffer from low bone density (osteopenia).

Hydrolyzed Collagen
Supplements: hydrolized collagen bones
Collagen is the main building block of all mammals, including humans, and functions as a glue that connects bone, muscle and skin cells, as such it is crucial to the well-being and function of our joints and consuming it can improve skin density as well as pain symptoms in the joints. Hydrolyzed collagen is collagen that has been broken down to allow for easier consumption and absorption.

Hyaluronic Acid
Supplements: Hyaluronic Acid psoriasis
Also known as hyaluronan, this is a naturally-occurring substance in our bodies that has an important role in moisture retention and skin regeneration. In our skin, hyaluronic acid serves to bind water to our skin tissue which keeps it soft and supple. Upon injury to the skin, hyaluronan has an important role in accelerating cellular repair and regulating inflammation levels. As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid present in our skin decreases, and by taking it as a supplement, we can restore these crucial functions.

SAMe
S-Adenosyl methionine (or SAMe) is a molecule produced in the liver that has an important role in methylation- a process by which certain genes are regulated and inhibited. This natural process is critical to our development and the protection of our DNA. As a supplement, SAMe has been shown to be as effective at alleviating the pain of osteoarthritis as NSAIDs like ibuprofen are, without the harmful side-effects associated with taking those medications. SAMe is also known to be as effective as some antidepressants in treating the symptoms of major depressive disorder (consult a doctor before taking SAMe for depression).

MSM

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a sulfur chemical compound found in plants, animals, and humans. It can also be chemically made.
Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, MSM is commonly used as an oral supplement to treat arthritis pain and swelling for a number of conditions including:
It’s also available as a topical solution to reduce wrinkles, eliminate stretch marks, and treat minor cuts.
In recent years, it has been researched for possible hair-growth properties.

You may already be eating foods that naturally contain sulfur or MSM. Common foods rich in this compound include:
Cooking these foods can decrease the natural presence of MSM. Eating these foods unprocessed or raw is the best way to consume optimal amounts of this natural compound. MSM supplements can also be taken in combination with MSM found naturally in foods.

Novel pacemakers can be powered with light

Scientists have developed a tiny solar cell that encourages the heart to beat, an advance that may pave the way for pacemakers powered by light. Researchers created a flexible mesh out of silicon, that when activated by flashes of light, creates a tiny electro-chemical effect which can stimulate the heart muscle in a unique way.
They started with one of their own designs previously used to stimulate neurons, but made the mesh thinner to easily wrap around the heart and strewed tiny nano-wires across its surface to attach to cardiac cells. A small optical beam scans the area with a laser. Each flash activates the cells, causing the heart to beat at the same frequency as the light, according to the study.

“Unlike today’s pacemakers, this method appears to ‘train’ the cardiac muscle to beat,” said an associate professor.

It takes a while for the effect to kick in, but the muscles continue to fire for some time after the light pulses are stopped. The method is still early in development. If implanted in humans, the mesh could be injected at the target site, and a small optical fibre that would deliver the light pulses could be inserted through minimally invasive surgery, the asst. Prof. said.

Scientists have developed a coffee-cup-sized prototype of a surgically implantable artificial kidney that uses a silicon nanofilter to remove toxins, salts and other molecules from the blood.

The advance could be a promising alternative to kidney transplantation or dialysis for people with end stage renal disease (ESRD), researchers said. "We aim to conduct clinical trials on an implantable, engineered organ in this decade, and we are coordinating our efforts with both the NIH (US National Institutes of Health) and the US Food and Drug Administration," said Shuvo Roy, from University of California, San Francisco in US.

Researchers prototyped and tested key components of the coffee-cup-sized device, which mimics functions of the human kidney. One component of the new artificial kidney is a silicon nanofilter to remove toxins, salts, some small molecules, and water from the blood.

Bangladesh born Roy's research team designed the device based on manufacturing methods used in the production of semiconductor electronics and microelectromechanical systems. The new silicon nanofilters offer several advantages - including more uniform pore size - over filters now used in dialysis machines, according to Roy, who led the research together with William Fissell, a professor at the Vanderbilt University in US.
The silicon nanofilter is designed to function on blood pressure alone and without a pump or electrical power. Fissell said the project's goal is to create a permanent solution to the scarcity problem in organ transplantation. "We are increasing the options for people with chronic kidney disease who would otherwise be forced onto dialysis," Fissell added.

The artificial kidney being developed by Roy and Fissell is designed to be connected internally to the patient's blood supply and bladder and implanted near the patient's own kidneys, which are not removed. The research was presented at the American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week in US.

Smart patch that can be worn on the wrist to detect symptoms of Parkinson's disease and even deliver drugs.

Researchers have developed a smart patch that can be worn on the wrist to detect symptoms of Parkinson's disease or epilepsy and even deliver drugs.
Dae-Hyeong Kim at the Seoul National University in South Korea and his team developed the adhesive patch that is flexible and can be worn on the wrist like a second skin.
The patch is 1 millimetre thick and made of a hydrocolloid dressing - a type of thin flexible bandage - into which a layer of silicon nanoparticles is embedded.
These silicon nanomembranes are often used for flexible electronics, and can pick up the bend and stretch of human skin and convert these into small electronic signals.
The signals are stored as data in separate memory cells made from layers of gold nanoparticles, 'New Scientist' reported.
The device could be used to detect and treat tremors in people who have Parkinson's disease, or epileptic seizures, said Kim.
If these movements are detected, small heaters in the patch trigger the release of drugs from silicon nanoparticles. The patch also contains temperature sensors to make sure the skin does not burn during the process.
Currently, the patch relies on an external power source, but it could be powered by other devices worn on the wrist, such as a watch, said Kim.
Kim expects the device to be available in about five years for use in healthcare.
