Why do people resist blood sugar medication in favour of alternative therapies? Is it safe?

56-year-old Kritika Sharma was diagnosed with high blood sugar levels during a routine blood check up. On her family’s insistence, she consulted a doctor who prescribed her medication. But she chose not to take the prescribed medication and opted for natural remedies to control her sugar. Subsequent tests showed that she was not able to control her blood sugar levels and after five years of resistance, she finally started her medication when diabetes started to affect her vital organs.

Dr. Sunil Mishra, Director of Endocrinology and Diabetology at Medanta shares how this is a common occurrence. “If there are no immediate complications to begin with despite the high readings, patients are not inclined to treat diabetes with medication. However, it needs to be noted that asymptomatic diabetes in the long run is good enough to create a complication. We know to a large extent type 2 diabetes is not curable. Also, scientific studies have shown that the golden time to treat diabetes is in the first 5-10 years. This is considered the golden period because if it's treated well from the beginning, long term diabetes complications are low.” There are a few people who when they lose weight (30-50% with lifestyle modifications) may be able to reverse the diabetes.

Dr. Shraddha Bhure, Medical Director, Boehringer Ingelheim, India adds, “Heightened awareness and debunking of myths around diabetes can go a long way in convincing people to take appropriate measures. For instance, some people believe diabetes isn’t a serious condition and hence avoid medication, as they are unaware of the complications which can occur if the disease isn’t managed correctly. Additionally, some patients avoid diabetes medication due to a fear of side effects and switch to alternative therapies completely. Alternative therapy options like Ayurveda or Homeopathy can well complement in treating diabetes. Every alternate therapy has multiple approaches to offer, but eventually it’s the physician’s call to decide what’s best for the patient.”
Dr. Kushal Banerjee, a second-generation homeopath at Dr. Kalyan Banerjee’s Clinic recommends that all patients should consider homeopathy as an important option to manage their diabetes. In the early stages, along with strict lifestyle management, the majority of patients may be able to stop all medicines for life. He adds, “No matter which system of medicine is taken, changes in lifestyle including diet, meal timings, exercise, sleep pattern and management of stress are key to improving your health.”

The journey of diabetes is lifelong, and poses risk of multitude of complications, if uncared for. It is not about merely high blood-glucose level, but the associated risk of complications, adverse events, and even premature mortality, that poses priority for meticulous and sustained care. The commonly known type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an outcome of imbalance between the metabolic load, versus the body's physiological capacity. Unhealthy lifestyle practices with excess dietary calorie consumption and limited physical activity, poor stress management, as well as genetic and constitutional factors, predispose to the risk of T2DM and associated complications. The approach to good diabetes-care is based on some founding principles, which may be simple to understand but need a committed effort to sustain in the long run, adds Dr Bhure.

Below are the ABCDEF of diabetes care:

A1c control (hemoglobin A1c represents long-term blood-glucose control)
Blood-pressure control
Cholesterol control
Diet and Drugs
Exercise and Eye-care
Foot-care

In short, diabetes-care is not a short-walk, but a long journey of life, asking for a display of will, motivation, and optimism throughout! It is not about the risk, but about our actions to address the risk, which makes the difference.

But, I do know a blind girl, who was a juvenile diabetic on insulin injection, learned and started self-healing with alternative therapy- REIKI, which is based on energy- there is energy everywhere and within us also. When there is depletion of energy in any part of the body, we get sick. She started healing her whole body with REIKI and within 3 months was totally non-dependent on insulin and her blood sugar levels became normal. But, with Reiki, once your levels come to normal, one shouldn't give up healing, but continue to do so for good health forever. There are many REIKI practitioners all over the world and science has proved that the energy level around the body could be viewed as aura, which has enhanced to a greater level. Many doctors do believe in REIKI, but for some diseases, we do need the allopathy treatment along with REIKI. We always say that REIKI isn't the be-all and end-all, it gets better results when taken for some along with the tablets prescribed by the doctors. I'm a REIKI master, also a qualified teacher for Magnified Healing.

Is carb addiction real? Here is all you need to know

Are you addicted to carbs?

Are you one of those who cannot resist junk food? Every time you walk by a bakery, you start feeling hungry even if you just had your meal? Or you cannot imagine your life without pasta or pizza? If you are shaking your head in approval with each question, you are addicted to carbs. It might seem like a normal thing to you, but carb addiction is a breeding ground for numerous problems including weight gain and cardiovascular issues.

What are carbs?
Carbohydrate is the primary source of food our body uses for energy. Made up of three primary elements like carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, carbs help as a precursor to ribonucleic acid (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). When we talk about carb addiction, the first thing that comes to our mind is refined carbs like pasta, pizza and cookies. However, there are numerous healthy sources of crab-like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole-grain bread, pasta, and rice. Every food items contain some amount of carbs.

Are carbs addictive?
Yes! Carb addiction is real, especially for the one that contains refined sugar, salt and fat. As per a 2008 study published in "Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews," a lot of people are addicted to carbs, which is a major obstacle to optimal health. Excess intake of carbs from grains and sugar in your diet can disrupt normal body function, leading to weight gain, rise in blood sugar level and an eating disorder. Another study revealed that eating high-carb meals stimulate certain regions of the brain that are linked with cravings and rewards.

Tips to deal with carb addiction

The first step to get over carb addiction is to recognise that you are suffering from this problem. Here are 4 easy way to get rid of this addiction:

-Rather than filling your plate with carb-rich food, eat more protein-rich food items. Both plant and animal source of proteins are considered good for health and will help you keep fuller for longer.

-Sometimes when you feel hungry untimely, your body might actually want water. Most of the time people confuse dehydration with hunger. So drink plenty of water.

-To get rid of carb addiction, you must first recognise your triggers. What you cannot resist at all- pizza or pasta. This will make it easier for you to avoid those trigger foods.

-Do not be too hard on yourself. Shunning carb is not an appropriate solution to this problem. Controlling is good, but do not shun carbs. Just be mindful and eat in moderation.

Include carrots in your meal plan to lower blood sugar naturally

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that can lead to serious complications if not properly controlled. In addition to medication, making dietary changes such as following a healthy eating plan that is naturally rich in nutrients and low in fat and calories, as well as maintaining a healthy weight by staying physically active, can help you control blood sugar and reduce the risk of serious health consequences associated with diabetes. But, turns out there’s a specific type of food or juice that can help improve blood sugar control and manage diabetes.

You get type 2 diabetes when your body either doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood glucose levels or resists the effects of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that keeps your blood sugar level from going too high or too low. We already know that eating low glycemic index, or GI, foods like carrots, can help manage blood sugar levels.

Carrots for type 2 diabetes: How it works

According to a report in the Express, scientists have found that carrots are packed with potent health-boosting antioxidants which appear to prevent type 2 diabetes. Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine in California reported that for people with a genetic predisposition to diabetes, beta-carotene in carrots may lower the risk for type 2 diabetes. Your body can convert beta carotene into a close cousin of vitamin A. While the role of vitamin A in diabetes is not understood well, researchers  suggested that the vitamin may improve the insulin-producing beta-cells.

The Stanford University’s scientists also found that gamma-tocopherol, the major form of vitamin E in the diet which is found in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.

As per the study, the researchers found clear links between high blood levels of beta carotene and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes in people carrying a double dose of a specific variation (in the gene SLC30A4) - which is known to increase the risk of the condition. However, the variations combined with high blood levels of gamma tocopherol were linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

How to include carrots in your diabetes diet plan

If you have diabetes and are looking for a natural way to help manage your condition, adding carrots or carrot juice, despite its sweet flavour, to your daily diet can be helpful. According to the Glycemic Index Foundation, carrot juice (250ml serving) has a GI of 43 - foods that have a low GI of 55 or less are unlikely to cause a large spike in your blood sugar levels. This means carrot juice won’t spike the blood sugar levels although it may still contain sugar and carbohydrates.

Women With Big Butts Produce Smarter Children

The good news just keeps on coming for my fellow ladies who are well-endowed in the butt area.
Big behinds are having a moment, thanks to celebrities  but this is not just limited to pop culture. The scientific community are interested too.

There have been a number recent studies with focus on larger than average behinds and the results are really interesting.

Recent research  revealed that women with bigger glutes are smarter and healthier than their counterparts with smaller butts. The study also linked larger bums to the ability to resist chronic illnesses as well as having lower cholesterol and lower levels of glucose.

Now, another part of the study  has resurfaced, revealing even more benefits to having a lot of junk in the trunk.

This time, the researchers were able to find a correlation between big butts and your child's IQ, and concluded that women with big butts give birth to smarter children.

This is possible because of the higher levels of "good" fatty acids, specifically Omega-3, in the bodies of women with above average derrières.

Babies need these fatty acids for their brains to develop properly, and since the fats in the mother's breast milk comes from the lower part of the body, babies whose moms are blessed with big behinds get a lot more of Omega-3.

A similar research from 2007 also proved that gluteofemoral fat plays a huge role in producing smart babies, so this more recent study only strengthens those findings.

However, the researchers do also highlight that while having a fatter bottom can be key to having genius offspring, your genetics and lifestyle also play a role.

So if you're hoping to improve your chances of creating the next Albert Einstein, it's important that you eat healthy and stay active. It probably wouldn't hurt to add a couple of extra squats to your routine.
