Growth Hormone Deficiency - How To Identify It?

Growth hormone is one of the many hormones secreted by master endocrine gland i.e. pituitary gland. As its name suggests, growth hormone has a central role in the overall growth of human being. It plays a much more important role during childhood than adulthood. Growth hormone also controls our metabolism. Deficiency of growth hormone results in poor growth (short height) during childhood and also disorders of metabolism.

Growth hormone deficiency can be caused by abnormal development of pituitary gland, head injury, intra cranial tumours etc. or it can be idiopathic (reason not known). It is very important to identify the problem as early as possible because the results are very good when treatment is started early. And also, because growth hormone deficiency can be caused by serious underlying disorders, for example - intracranial tumors.

Following are few hints to the possible diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency.
  1. If your child shows any of these signs, take him/her to an endocrinologist(hormone specialist) for assessment of his/her growth
  2. If your child is frequently mistaken for being much younger for his/her age.
  3. If your child is being teased or bullied by his/her friends due to short height.
  4. If your child is fitting into the same clothes or shoes for more than 2 years.
  5. If your child is much shorter than children of the same age and sex. If your child is growing less than 4 cm in a year.

Irregular Periods or Missed Cycle?

Periods can be quite irksome as they are accompanied by cramps, PMS, irritation and mood swings. But they can also be comforting and provide relief to many women. Regular periods are a sign that everything inside the body is operating exactly as it should be. But quite often, some women may face irregularity in periods. Apart from pregnancy and hitting menopause, there could be a variety of factors that could cause irregularity or abnormality in menses. Doctors define periods as either ‘normal’ or ‘abnormal’ based on three criteria – how regular your cycles are, how long the bleeding lasts and how much you’re bleeding.

A normal bleeding lasts up to five to seven days, if it’s more than that it is considered as prolonged bleeding. A normal cycle requires you to change your pads three to four times a day, but if you are changing every hour then your bleeding is abnormally heavy. Start keeping a track of your periods, if you haven’t already done it. Below we tell you what the possible causes of irregular periods could be.

High Stress Levels: When you are undergoing a lot of stress, your body can start to conserve energy by preventing ovulation. Stress can suppress the hormones that regulate ovulation or the release of an egg from the ovaries. If ovulation doesn’t happen, a period won’t happen either. Stress can also contribute to hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA). When you don’t have a lot of estrogen – and levels of other hormones including luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) – fall below normal, you aren’t able to build up the uterine lining and therefore you don’t get your period.

Poor Diet: A diet low in nutrients, antioxidants and probiotic foods can affect your periods. Excess cortisol hinders the optimal function of many other essential hormones such as sex hormones. It can also lead to protein breakdown, resulting in muscle-wasting and potentially osteoporosis. A high intake of sugar, hydrogenated fats and artificial additives are linked with thyroid issues and adrenal fatigue that can raise cortisol. If you’re struggling with menstruation, make sure to eat right kind of food. Foods that are high in antioxidants, nutrient-dense and that contain plenty of fats and proteins.

Over-Exercising: To maintain a healthy lifestyle moderate exercising is essential but too much exercise can also put excess pressure on your adrenal, thyroid and pituitary glands. For example, women who suddenly start intense training for a marathon, high level of physical exertion can put a sudden halt to their periods. Physical exertion can increase stress and deplete the body energy needed to regulate sex hormones. Exercise-induced amenorrhea can be an indicator of an overall energy drain and is most common among young women.

PCOS: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a hormone imbalance in women that negatively impacts ovulation. When a woman PCOS, she experiences altered levels of sex hormones that can result in weight gain, acne, facial hair growth and even irregular menstrual cycles. It can also cause infrequent or prolonged periods.

Low Body Weight: Body fat is important for creating enough estrogen, which is why extremely thing women or those with serious conditions like anorexia and bulimia can experience absent or missed periods. When your body mass index (BMI) falls below 18 or 19, you can start to miss your period due to having too little body fat. A low-calorie, low-fat diet can also result in nutrient deficiencies and lowered boy-fat percentages that may contribute to irregular periods and bone loss.

A one-off irregular period is not worrisome. If it is persistent and you’ve gone three cycles and it’s irregular, then it’s time to call your doctor. No matter how much women loathe ‘that time of the month’, we should be grateful that regular periods indicate that our bodies are performing to the mark. There are more possible reasons that can cause irregularities in periods, identify those factors, track your period calendar and do not miss to get in touch with your healthcare provider.

5 Herbs To Balance Women's Hormones

Many women have horrible PMS or menopausal symptoms, and others suffer from infertility. More often than not these hormone imbalances are cause from dysfunctions in the endocrine system which for those of you unfamiliar with this, it is your glandular system. Here are a few natural herbs you can use to get your imbalanced hormones under control.

When it comes to hormones natural therapy is always better, so rather than jumping straight to conventional hormone therapy why not give these a try first. There are many herbs that can assist in hormone function but these are all time favorites. Here are 5 herbs that have been quite successful in my practice:

1. Maca
Maca has been used for centuries by the Peruvian people for fertility, hormonal balance, libido, and endurance. It does not produce hormones but rather works as an adaptogenic herb which means that it adapts to each body’s circumstances and balances hormones depending on that person’s needs. So if a person is producing too much or too little of a hormone, it will act in the opposite direction either increasing the deficient hormone or decreasing the body’s production of the over abundant hormone. I like to call it a regulator. It regulates hormones and keeps them in check not allowing them to get out of control in either way.

Maca stimulates and nourishes the pituitary and hypothalamus glands of your endocrine system which are known as the “master glands”. These two glands are responsible for regulating all the other hormone producing glands. With these “master glands” in balance it has the ability to naturally bring all other glands into balance as well.

This herb is not just for women! Men benefit greatly from this herb and it can often times increase libido and endurance. It is a natural “Viagra” of all sorts. Also because 40-50 percent of infertility cases are due in part to the man, taking this herb may help with sperm motility, volume, and quality.

 2. Red Raspberry Leaf
It has a pleasant taste as a tea and is a nutrient dense power packed herb for women. This herb is best known for its uterine strengthening properties. This wonderful herb is a rich source of vitamins and minerals particularly vitamin C.

Red Raspberry Leaf has many benefits besides that of a uterine tonic. It has been known to help increase fertility in both men and women, prevent miscarriage and hemorrhage, and help decrease heavy blood flow and painful menstrual cramps. It can ease the nausea associated with pregnancy, reduce pain during and after labor, and help stimulate milk production.

 3. Vitex Or (Chaste Tree Berry)

This herb has a long extensive history of use for hormone regulation. It is often used for treating endometriosis, infertility, PMS, preventing miscarriage in first trimester, and menopausal symptoms particularly hot flashes. Vitex or chaste tree berry. I have had success using this herb in my clinic to help regulate menstrual cycle and even help initiate a period in women who have had absent periods for some time.

Vitex does not contain actual hormones but rather works to help naturally balance the body’s hormones by way of regulating the pituitary which we talked about earlier and that it was one of the body’s “master glands”. By regulating the pituitary it has an effect on the function of the other glands involved in this system. The pituitary sends out the signal to the other glands to tell them when and how much hormone to produce. This communication system is called a hormonal feedback loop. If the pituitary is not balanced properly this will effectively throw off the balance of the other glands.

 4. Milk Thistle

This is one of my all-time favorite herbs for a multitude of health conditions. Milk Thistle is one of the best liver cleansing herbs and a healthy liver is vital for hormone balance. Many women have an excess of estrogen and a deficiency of progesterone because of it. What many people don’t know is that excess estrogens get filtered out of the body through the liver.

If the liver is congested and stagnant the body cannot eliminate these excess estrogens and they re-enter the body. The liver is also the processing plant for our body’s toxic wastes such as chemicals, heavy metals, fungus and other toxins. Many of these toxins can act to mimic hormones in our body and lead to further hormonal imbalance and disruption.

 5. Oatstraw
Oatstraw may not be the typical herb that comes to mind when people think of herbs for hormones. I have found oatstraw to strengthen the nerves, calm the body, strengthen the blood, stabilize moods, strengthen digestion, sooth stomach, balance the endocrine system or those hormone producing glands, support the skeletal system due to its abundance of bio-available calcium, magnesium, and silica, and calm the central nervous system.

Other benefits of this beautiful herb are great supportive benefits to the hair, skin, and nails, diuretic, cholesterol lowering, and heart health. This herb is great on its own or as a base mixed with other herbs.
