DON'T RE-BOIL WATER

Most people believe that boiling water is one of the best means to purify it. We all boil water for making the rejuvenating drink- tea, or making soups, or any other hot drink. But, after boiling if some water is left behind, what do we do? We normally re-boil it again for some other use, right?

But now experts are warning against re-boiling the left over boiled water. As with any other liquids, when we boil it again, it thickens, the same happens to water too, increasing or concentrate the dissolved salts in the water.

Some of the harmful things that happen when we re-boil water-
1) Changes in the chemistry of water- Boiling water will reduce or alter the amount of dissolved gases in it. This will not only alter the taste of water but also increase the amount of unwanted chemicals and salts in the water.
2) Amount of nitrate- Nitrate salts usually dissolved in water are not harmful. But re-boiling the same amount of water, can change the nitrates into toxin- nitrosamine, which is carcinogenic, leading to some cancers.
3) Calcium- Yes, calcium is good for our bones and teeth. But re-boiling increases the dissolved amount of calcium, which can lead to the formation of kidney and gall-bladder stones.
4) Arsenic- Re-boiling will increase the amount of arsenic in the water.Arsenic in greater amount can cause cancer, heart attacks, mental disorder, infertility. Prolonged use of reboiled water can cause skin and circulatory system damages.
5) Fluoride- Increased levels of fluoride in re-boiled water can lead to bone damages, making our bones brittle, leading to more fractures, tenderness and pain. Younger children can damages their teeth and tooth enamel with excess fluoride in water.

Kindly do not use re-boiled water to make babies formula, as it contains less oxygen and more unwanted salts and metals. So, always boil the exact amount of water you need each time. Moreover, water becoming a scarce commodity in many places around the globe, don't waste this precious liquid.

Beetroot juice boosts exercise capacity of COPD patients

Drinking beetroot juice may improve exercise capacity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, a new study has claimed.

The research by Wake Forest University looked at a small group of COPD patients who drank beetroot juice as compared to a placebo drink before exercise.

“The intent of this study was to determine if acute ingestion of beetroot juice, which is rich with nitrates, prior to exercising could improve the exercise capacity of COPD patients,” said Michael Berry, who is the primary investigator and lead author of the study.

COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, makes it difficult for patients to breathe and worsens over time.

Patients often complain of shortness of breath with exertion, so tasks like climbing steps can leave them gasping for air. In turn, they tend to limit their activities, become more sedentary, and lose fitness and physical function.

Berry said his study findings showed overall that those patients who drank beetroot juice were able to extend their exercise time, and had reduced exercise diastolic and resting systolic blood pressures.

This is the first study to demonstrate beneficial effects of dietary nitrite supplementation on exercise performance and blood pressure in patients with COPD, he added.

Researchers recruited 15 COPD patients; 11 white males, one African-American male and three white females. Patients completed four visits.

During visit one, they completed baseline pulmonary function testing, filled out health status questionnaires, had a brief medical examination and completed an incremental exercise test on a stationary bicycle to determine their maximal exercise work rate.

The second visit one week later consisted of additional pulmonary function and lung volume testing, as well as a familiarisation exercise test on an exercise bicycle at 75 per cent of the patients’ previously determined maximal work rates.

Participants were assigned to one of two treatments - beetroot juice (visit three) and placebo (visit four) or placebo (visit three) and beetroot juice (visit four). These visits were separated by at least a seven-day break.

The study was published in the journal Nitric Oxide: Biology and Chemistry.

Beetroot beneficial for heart failure patients, athletes

Beetroot may benefit heart failure patients and improve the athletic performance of football teams, scientists say.

David Poole, professor of exercise kinesiology and anatomy and physiology at Kansas State University has shown in previous research that the nitrate found in beetroot concentrate increases blood flow to skeletal muscles during exercise.

In a new study published in the Journal of Nitric Oxide, Biology and Chemistry, Poole and colleagues provide the basis for how beetroot juice may benefit football players by preferentially increasing blood flow to fast-twitch muscle fibres - the ones used for explosive running.

In addition to improving athletic performance, the research also found that beetroot juice can improve the quality of life for heart failure patients.

The benefits of beetroot come from the nitrate found within it. The amount of nitrate in one 70-millilitre bottle of beetroot juice is about the same amount found in 100 g of spinach.

"When consumed, nitrate is reduced in the mouth by bacteria into nitrite," said Scott Ferguson, doctoral student in anatomy and physiology.

"The nitrite is swallowed again and then reduced to nitric oxide, which is a potent vasodilator. The nitric oxide dilates the blood vessels, similar to turning on a water faucet, and allows blood to go where it needs to go," said Ferguson.

The beetroot juice consumption resulted in a 38 per cent higher blood flow to the skeletal muscles during exercise and was preferential to the less-oxygenated, fast-twitch muscles.

"Heart failure is a disease where oxygen delivery to particular tissues, especially working skeletal muscles, is impaired, decreasing the capacity to move the arms or legs and be physically active," Poole said.

"The best therapy for these patients is getting up and moving around. However, that is often difficult. Increasing the oxygen delivery to these muscles through beetroot can provide a therapeutic avenue to improve the quality of life for these patients," Poole added.

Why the Mediterranean diet is so healthy

No question that when it comes to healthy eating, few diets get as high marks as the Mediterranean diet. Now scientists think they know why--it's the combination of olive oil and leafy green vegetables that packs such a healthy punch.

Olive oil’s unsaturated fat combines with the nitrate in leafy greens and vegetables to make nitro fatty acids. Researchers from King’s College London and University of California tested the effects nitro fatty acids had on genetically engineered mice. They found it helped lower blood pressure because it blocked the enzyme epoxide hydrolase, which is also found in humans. This would help explain why the Mediterranean diet is heart-healthy.

The benefits of nitro fatty acids could be used to make new drugs for treating heart disease and high blood pressure in the future, albeit after more extensive testing in humans.
