Ways to prevent heavy metals in your baby's food

Ways to prevent heavy metals in your baby's food

Heavy metals like arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury are everywhere in our environment and it's almost impossible to avoid them in your baby's diet. These metals have even been found in store-bought baby foods, including organic brands in unsafe levels.

But there are ways to lower the likelihood of your baby ingesting them. Here is what you can do.

Why are metals present in baby food?

All the food, including baby food, contains some heavy metals. Metals are naturally present in water, soil and air. But metals also enter our food through pesticides and pollution. It has been found that some of America's biggest baby food manufacturers have been selling food with high levels of these metals. An analysis of 168 baby foods was done in the year 2019, it was found that 95 per cent of them had toxic metals in them. All the products have a measurable amount of at least one heavy metal, about one-third has worrisome levels of these metals and 15 per cent has health risk if eaten once a day.

Excessive consumption of these heavy metals can cause health issues and damage a child's developing brain. Public health experts have suggested that the Food and Drug Administration set safety standards for baby foods and provide more transparent labels. Currently, the FDA does not regulate the heavy metals in most baby foods.

How to avoid metal in baby's food?

It is not possible to completely avoid heavy metals lurking in your baby's food and snacks. But here are a few steps you can take to lower your baby's risk of ingesting too many metals in their diet.

- Serve them a wide variety of food that is rich in nutrients. Feeding them with a wide variety of nutrients help limit the risk of long-term exposure to heavy metals. You can start with pureed vegetables and fruits.

- Limit the rice cereals and snacks made with rice flour. Rice absorbs 10 times more arsenic than other grains. Go for whole grains instead, like barley and oats.

- Instead of processed snacks, give your child whole foods as much as possible. Snacks that are low in heavy metals include apples, unsweetened applesauce, avocados, bananas, barley with vegetables, cheese, grapes, beans, hard-boiled eggs, peaches, strawberries and yoghurt.

- Choose to breastfeed over formula milk if possible.

- Get your home's water tested for lead, if you use it for preparing the formula or cereals. Metals can get in tap water, especially if it comes through older pipes. You can use bottled water to make your baby's food.

- Avoid giving them fruit juice. No juice at all for infants and no more than 4 ounces per day for 1-3 years old, recommends the American Academy of Pediatrics.

- Limit their carrot and sweet potato intake. These two usually have heavier metals than other ground vegetables. This is because they are grown in the ground.

Can heavy metal in food harm the baby?

It is a bit unlikely but not impossible. As per the American Academy of Pediatrics, the heavy metals found in baby foods pose a small risk to children. But the exposure should be minimised as it can be harmful to the developing brain.

Many other things like the environment and genetics put them at risk, metal from food is just one of these factors.

Our government must regulate and set rigorous safety standards for baby food.

Should you make baby food instead of buying it?

Heavy metals are present in the products we buy, so even making homemade baby food will not make much difference. But making it at home is still a better option as they will avoid the manufacturing and packaging chemicals.

New way to remove toxic mercury from drinking water can be reused many times

Considering mercury is highly toxic, it not only needs a whole lot of caution when handling or disposing it, it can also be quickly absorbed by the skin or lungs if inhaled. No amount of boiling can remove Mercury from water, but a new study proposes a radically different way to filter it from contaminated water.

The filtering works using electrochemistry — chemical interactions where electricity is used to move electrons from one atoms or molecule to another. Much like the positive and negative electrodes in a battery, a platinum electrode is dipped into the contaminated water as electricity is run through the electrode.

The surface of the platinum rod can attract a large number of mercury or other heavy metal atoms. Platinum, which is a noble, unreactive metal under normal circumstances, forms an alloy with mercury atoms when electricity is involved in the process. The contaminated water gets progressively cleaner as more mercury from the water is taken up with the platinum to form an alloy. The alloy, being very stable, doesn’t allow mercury to re-enter the water.

Mercury can find its way into our water supply quite easily. The largest source of mercury in water supply is from discarded devices that contain the heavy metal being throw away without taking extra safety measures. Heavy metals can trickle into water bodies and spread over larger areas very quickly.

Not only is this effective in ridding water of mercury, it can also be re-used, making it a scaleable concept for commercial water purifiers.

“Another great thing with our technique is that it is very selective. Even though there may be many different types of substance in the water, it just removes the mercury,”  author of the study said.

“Therefore, the electrode doesn’t waste capacity by unnecessarily taking away other substances from the water.”

Health risks you may be inviting by getting a tattoo

Getting a tattoo, small or big, is almost on every person's bucket list. A study has found that half the population of the world aged between 18 to 35 has some sort of a tattoo on their bodies. It definitely is a style statement and getting a tattoo that has an emotional meaning for you can also be uplifting in a lot of ways. It is also a sign of liberation and freedom from the stereotypes of the society, but is it a freedom from health risks? The chemicals, pigments, and dyes may be good for the trend, but not for your body.

A study found that certain tattoo inks can be toxic. That's not all. Based on an estimate, almost sixty per cent people who got a tattoo regretted it, and most of it was because of the health issues that started surfacing.

Toxic Inks

A study found that one in every five tattoo inks contains carcinogenic chemicals which can cause serious health risks. Most tattoo inks do not even comply to the international standards. The European Society of Tattoo and Pigment research established in 2013 found chemicals like mercury, copper, and many others that are extremely harmful for the skin.

Skin Cancer

The toxic inks can also cause skin cancer, if they affect your skin and body in extreme ways. Notable number of cases have come up where tattoos have led to melanoma or cancer in the skin cells. In 2015, a report revealed that a woman with cervical cancer had apparent malignant cells in her lymph nodes, which were later discovered to be tattoo ink.

Infections

It is very important to ensure that when you have weighted all pros and cons of getting a tattoo and have finally decided to ink yourself, you go to a trustworthy tattoo artist who is popular for his hygiene. The tattoo needles harbor more germs than you can imagine. Even being this careful might not be enough. According to a study, three percent of all tattoos get infected and people may experience persistent itching or irritation on their tattoos.

Complications in medical procedures

During medical procedures, metal based tattoo inks may interfere with results of an MRI-Scan or and X-ray and similar tests. It may also lead to swollen skin where the tattoo is, or even serious burns. It is advised that you consider these complications before getting a tattoo and also let your doctor know if you go for any tests and have a tattoo, so they can see what they can do.

Hepatitis

Another major health risk that you may be subjecting yourself to by getting a tattoo is Hepatitis. Hepatitis is caused by sharing needles that are not sterilized properly after being used on someone else. It is very important that whenever you decide to get a tattoo you consult a few people who already have it to understand which is the cleanest tattoo parlor around you and which one should you go to.

Scary Amounts of Mercury Have Been Found Lurking in The Permafrost

The northern hemisphere's permafrost regions have been concealing a really unpleasant surprise: mercury. A lot of mercury. Nearly twice as much mercury as the rest of the planet's natural mercury combined.

Researchers studied core samples from the Alaskan permafrost, and their estimates show 793 million kilograms of mercury have been trapped in the northern hemisphere's permafrost since the last Ice Age.

This finding has grave implications if the permafrost melts away.

And the melt has already started happening - in the Arctic, melting permafrost has revealed some giant ( thankfully dormant) viruses  tens of thousands of years old that could awaken and wreak havoc.

Deforestation has caused permafrost melt in Siberia, which in turn caused the ground to collapse into a giant crater; and in other parts of Siberia, permafrost thaw has been linked to the appearance of mysterious sinkholes and craters.

Now there's also mercury to worry about. If the permafrost continues to melt, it could release a tremendous amount of mercury, and this could, in turn, impact ecosystems all around the world.

"There would be no environmental problem if everything remained frozen, but we know the Earth is getting warmer," said lead author,  a hydrologist.

"Although measurement of the rate of permafrost thaw was not part of this study, the thawing permafrost provides a potential for mercury to be released - that's just physics."

Natural mercury enters the permafrost from the atmosphere. As part of the mercury cycle,  atmospheric mercury vapour binds with organic material in the soil, which is then buried by sediment. Over time, it is frozen into the permafrost.

To gauge the mercury levels in the permafrost, the team drilled 13 core samples between 2004 and 2012 from different sites around Alaska, selected for their diverse soil characteristics to represent the entire northern hemisphere.

The measurements taken by the team were consistent with published results for other tundra soils, and with 11,000 measurements taken from 4,926 other non-permafrost sites around the world.

According to the team's calculations, there are 793 gigagrams (793 million kilograms), or more than 15 million gallons, of mercury frozen in the northern hemisphere's permafrost. That is, the researchers said, roughly 10 times the amount of all human-caused mercury emissions over the last 30 years.

If we include non-permafrost soils in the permafrost regions, there are 1,656 gigagrams of mercury stowed away down there. This is nearly twice as much as is found in non-permafrost regions, the oceans, and the atmosphere combined.

If it were to leach into the waterways, it could have grave implications. Inorganic mercury can be transformed by microbes into methylmercury, a potent neurotoxin. Cases of methylmercury poisoning have occurred in humans after eating fish from methylmercury-contaminated water,  and it can cause central nervous system damage and birth defects.

"There's a significant social and human health aspect to this study," said a research hydrologist.

"The consequences of this mercury being released into the environment are potentially huge because mercury has health effects on organisms and can travel up the food chain, adversely affecting native and other communities."

And if the mercury gets into the atmosphere, it could travel around the world.

The next step in the research is to model how climate change could cause the permafrost to release mercury, and how it would spread around the world.

"24 percent of all the soil above the equator is permafrost, and it has this huge pool of locked-up mercury,"he said.

"What happens if the permafrost thaws? How far will the mercury travel up the food chain? These are big-picture questions that we need to answer."
