Life-threatening bacteria found in Make-up products:

The vast majority of in-use make-up products such as beauty blenders, mascara and lip gloss are contaminated with potentially life threatening superbugs, researchers have warned.

"Make-up products used every day by millions of people in the UK are contaminated with potentially deadly bugs, such as E.coli and Staphylococci, because most are not being cleaned and are used far beyond their expiry dates," said study lead author.

According to the study published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology, bacteria that can cause illnesses ranging from skin infections to blood poisoning if used near eyes, mouth or cuts or grazes were found in nine out of ten of the products.

This risk is amplified in immunocompromised people who are more likely to contract infections from opportunistic bacteria.

The relatively new beauty blenders - sponges used to apply skin foundation products - were found to have the highest levels of potentially harmful bacteria - with the vast majority (93 per cent) not having ever been cleaned, despite more than two thirds (64 per cent) being dropped on the floor at some point during use.

The research looked at beauty blender products - hugely popular make-up sponges used to blend foundation and contouring on the face.

Often endorsed by celebrities, these sponges are estimated to have sold over 6.5 million worldwide.

The researchers found these products are particularly susceptible to contamination as they are often left damp after use, which creates an ideal breeding ground for harmful bacteria.

"Consumers' poor hygiene practices when it comes to using make-up, especially beauty blenders, is very worrying when you consider that we found bacteria such as E.coli - which is linked with faecal contamination - breeding on the products we tested," Bashir said.

The findings reveal that consumers are unwittingly putting themselves at risk, and that manufacturers and regulatory bodies should do more to protect their customers by making expiry dates and cleaning requirements more prominent on packaging.

EU guidance holds make-up brands to strict hygiene standards of manufacture and states that E.coli in particular should not be found in any concentration in new cosmetic products.

However, there is currently limited consumer protection around the risks of contaminating products while in use.

According to the study, post-Brexit, UK consumers could be at even greater risk as they will no longer be protected by EU regulations and could find themselves purchasing more beauty products from the US - for example - where there are no regulatory requirements to put expiry dates on make-up packaging at all.

Avoid make-up products, anti-acne creams during pregnancy

Expectant mothers in their first trimester must not use any sort of cosmetics, cleaning agents and medicines to protect the fetal brain development from chemicals that can trigger autism and health of the baby. Stay away from make-up products like lipsticks, lip balms and anti-acne creams, say experts.

Experts have listed ingredients and products that should be avoided:
Make-up products like lipstick, lip-gloss, lip balms, eyeliners, mascaras, deodorants, foundation, nail polish, body oil, talcum powder, hair removal products and hair dyes can cause a number of mishaps. This includes miscarriage, infertility, delayed puberty, hormonal imbalance, damage the endocrine, premature delivery, endometriosis (a uterus condition causing severe pain in pelvic region), hormonal imbalance, birth defects, neurological damage to the child, ovarian cancer and skin allergies.

The worst among all is usage of acne cosmetic products like creams and gels. Acne creams have retinoids which cause miscarriages and abnormal fetal brain development. Staying away from any sort of acne product during pregnancy is a must.

Triclosan and Triclocarban are used as antimicrobial agents in personal care products, such as soaps. These ingredients can cause issues in your body.

Parabens are a type of preservative, present in soaps, shampoos and conditioners which are used to prevent the growth of bacteria. But too much of it can have an impact on fertility.

Formaldehyde, and a range of other volatile organic compounds which are ingredients in nail polish can cause birth defects and harm fertility.

Toluene is a commonly used solvent to get glossy finish on the nails. It affects the central nervous system and causes reproductive harm.

Phthalates is the most common chemical found in almost every cosmetic product. It disrupts the hormone levels, affect fertility and build up in breast milk.

Oxybenzone (benzophenone), octinoxate, and homosalate are found in many sunscreens, lip balms, and other products with SPF. They cause endometriosis and can pose a risk to reproductive systems.

Your make-up products can be riskier than you ever thought

This is your worst nightmare coming true. Your make-up products can put you at risk of early menopause!

Chemicals in lipstick, face cream and nail varnish can speed up the process by four years, according to a study. The study examined the effects of 111 chemicals on 31,575 women.

As many as 15 different chemicals were identified as harmful by a team of researchers at Washington University in St Louis and among them were phthalates, which are used to soften plastics.

They are found in food packaging and household products, including perfume, lipsticks, body wash, hair care products and nail varnishes, reports dailymail.co.uk.

The scientists analysed the levels of 111 chemicals in the blood and urine of the 31,575 women who took part in the study.

Their findings show that women with higher levels of certain chemicals go through the change two to four years earlier than those with lower levels.

A decline in ovarian function not only affects fertility, but can lead to a woman suffering heart disease, osteoporosis and other health problems. The chemicals are also known to increase the risk of certain cancers, metabolic syndrome and, in younger females, early puberty.

"Chemicals linked to earlier menopause may lead to an early decline in ovarian function, and our results suggest we as a society should be concerned," said senior author of the study, Professor Amber Cooper.
