Breastfeeding for more than 6 months leads to smaller waist circumference

Turns out, breastfeeding for more than six months is independently associated with smaller waist circumference in the decade after delivery among women. Pregnancy contributes to an accumulation of abdominal adiposity, which is an indicator of cardiometabolic dysfunction in later life.

During a recent study, the researchers assessed the relationship between waist circumference measured at follow-up and self-reported history of breastfeeding duration. Propensity score approaches were incorporated into the study to account for systematic differences between women who did and did not breastfeed.

The novel use of propensity score methods enabled the researchers to minimise the possibility of bias in the likelihood of breastfeeding due to overall healthier lifestyles. Additional analyses that consider the lifetime duration of breastfeeding is proposed in order to advance understanding of the cumulative effect of breastfeeding on maternal central adiposity.

Low levels of physical activity worsens psychosis

Physical inactivity is the fourth leading cause of avoidable death and is as harmful as smoking, according to World Health Organisation (WHO).

The researchers found that people with psychosis -- a mental disorder characterised by a disconnection from reality -- die up to 15 years before the general population, largely due to heart diseases.

Adults aged 18-64 must indulge in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity throughout the week, including walking, cycling, household chores or sport, according to recommendations by WHO.
The research also offers important insights into the barriers that prevent people with psychosis from engaging in regular physical activity.

Mobility difficulties, pain, depression and cognitive impairment explained low levels of physical activity in people with psychosis, the researchers said.

"Understanding and overcoming these barriers could be an important strategy to help people with psychosis be more active, and potentially reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease," said Brendon Stubbs from King's College London.

For the study, the researchers analysed more than 2,00,000 people aged 18-64 from nearly 50 low-and-middle-income countries to examine whether people with psychosis are meeting the WHO's recommended levels of physical activity.

These individuals were divided into three groups: people with psychosis, those with psychotic symptoms but no diagnosis and a control group (of people with no diagnosis of psychosis and no symptoms in the past 12 months).

Overall, people with psychosis were 36 per cent more likely not to meet the recommended physical activity levels compared to control ones.
When the researchers looked at men only, those with psychosis were over twice more likely not to meet the recommended levels compared to people in the control sample.

"It is unclear why men with psychosis showed such low levels of physical activity, although perhaps the earlier onset of illness typically seen in males means that lifestyle habits may have been altered over time by aspects of the illness or its management, such as negative symptoms, sedating medications or hospital admissions," explained Fiona Gaughran, from King's College London.

The study, published in Schizophrenia Bulletin, will help interventions aimed at helping people with psychosis to be more active and ultimately improve their mental and physical condition.

In a first, researchers have identified a tiny liver protein that when disrupted can lead to cardiovascular disease as well as fatty liver disease, a precursor to cancer.

The chief culprit in disabling the proteins delicate mechanics is a fatty acid found in red meat and butter, according to Shadab Siddiqi from University of Central Florida in the US.

Low density lipoproteins (VLDL) by the liver are known to increase cholesterol levels, a risk factor for plaque buildup in the arteries, he said.

For healthy liver function, normal VLDL secretion must be kept in a delicate balance. Too little VLDL secretion causes fatty liver and, potentially, liver cancer, researchers said.

Identifying the protein and what activates it is the first step in finding ways to prevent its malfunction and disease.

Siddiqi discovered a tiny protein - a small Valosin-containing Protein called Interacting Protein (SVIP) - that regulates how much VLDL is secreted into the blood.

SVIP in the liver must be regulated properly to ensure optimum health, said Siddiqi.

He equated the operation of the tiny protein to a manually operated car. To run smoothly, the driver must synchronise the gas pedal and the clutch.

If the two are not synchronised, the car does not move easily; it has fits and starts and ultimately stalls.

After identifying the SVIP protein, researchers found that it contains a binding site for myristic acid, a saturated, 14-carbon fatty acid that occurs in butterfat and animal fats, especially red meat.

Based on that finding, researchers studied the effects of different dietary fats, including myristic acid, on the functioning of SVIP.
They found that only myristic acid activated SVIP to secrete excess very low-density proteins into the blood.

If myristic acid was absent, they found the liver failed to secrete any VLDL. That caused fats to build up in the liver, which can lead to cancer, researchers said.

The findings suggest that high levels of myristic acid in the diet - through animal and dairy fats - keep SVIP from properly regulating the livers secretion of VLDL, they said.

"These findings suggest that our diet modulates the complex molecular processes that have profound effects on our health and lifespan," said Siddiqi.

The findings were published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Sitting with our legs crossed is a habit we tend to give in to unconsciously and automatically. We also do it when we're tired of our normal sitting position, when we're feeling slightly cold, or for women to look more ladylike. Although it can be comfortable and un-harmful for a short while, sitting cross legged turns out to have potential undesired consequences on your health if done repeatedly - with some of them being quite serious. Here are five of them:

1. It could cause peroneal nerve paralysis
There's more than one cause for peroneal nerve paralysis, and sitting cross legged is one of them. It arises as a difficulty or inability to lift the foot at the ankle due to an interruption in the peroneal nerve, and occurs as a result of isolated nerve traction and compression at the knees, hip joints, or ankles. These interruptions could be brought about by staying in the same position for a long while, such as sitting crossed legged.

2. It could spike blood pressure
After various studies carried out in 2010, it was proven that habitually sitting with one leg over the other could cause your blood pressure to rise. Whether you have problems with blood pressure or not, avoid sitting in this posture to ward off the occurrence of such problems, as well as other complications in blood circulation.
The reason why these health problems arise is because when we sit in this position, we apply pressure to the knee area, sending the blood from the legs back up to the chest. This results in the heart having to pump more blood, leading to an increase in blood pressure.

3. It could lead to pelvic imbalance
Sitting in this position often can put you at risk of pelvic imbalance, which refers to the condition by which our inner thigh muscles become shorter, and our outer thigh muscles become longer. Eventually, this could cause your joints to move out of place.

4. It could give rise to spider veins
Varicose and spider veins could be caused by a myriad of factors, including genes, as explained in this article. However, the crossing of legs is also one of the contributing factors to both conditions, as it causes pressure on your veins, causing them to become narrower and weaker. As a result, your blood could flow backwards, resulting in an accumulation of blood in the legs, which in turn can cause your veins to inflame and swell.

5. It could lead to a bad posture
According to a study, sitting with crossed legs for more than three hours a day could lead to a hunched posture, lower back and neck pains, and discomfort in the hips.

So, now that you know the risks, make sure you remind yourself to uncross your legs each time you catch yourself doing it! And of course, make others aware of the dangers by sharing this post. ↓

Wrong pain-killers taken during diabetes lead to damage in kidneys, even kidney failure, say doctors.

Medical experts say the use of pain-killers, especially NSAIDS (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) damages the tubules in the kidneys, which often leads to kidney failure. Though at times the problem is reversible, but mostly the problem persists.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents/analgesics (NSAIAs), are a class of drugs that provide analgesic (pain-killing) and antipyretic (fever-reducing) effects, and, in higher doses, anti-inflammatory effects. These are not suitable for diabetes patients.

"Most diabetics, especially those who have diabetes over a decade are more prone to kidney damage. Taking a pain killer especially NSAIDs (Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) increases your chances of acute kidney injury and failure," said Pradeep Gadge, consultant diabetologist, Gadge's Diabetes Centre and Visiting Consultant at Breach Candy and Sevenhills Hospital.

Emphasising that not all pain killers are dangerous for diabetes patients, Gadge said diabetes patients should use pain killers such as tramadol which are safer from kidney perspective.

Prateek Saikia, diabetologist of Safdarjung has said pain killers cause damage of the tubules in the kidneys and leads to increase in creatinine.

"The problem is not always reversible. It may lead to acute renal failure patient may need dialysis and rarely even die," said Saikia.

According to the WHO, India is a home to 65 million diabetic patients, the number being second only to China.

Analysis by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences recently revealed that change in lifestyle with lack of sleep were among the top reasons behind the occurrence of the disease.

"Diabetes patients should avoid certain antibiotics like amikacin (if they have already existing kidney problem). Also certain antibiotics like Gatifloxacin can cause severe fluctuations in blood sugar levels and can be dangerous," said Saikia.
