Coffee Doesn't Just Kick-Start Your Day - It's Healthy Too

Coffee's distinctive smell and palatable taste are what help an estimated 100 million Americans pry themselves out of bed each morning. However, while its addictive flavor keeps us wanting more, you may find comfort in knowing the many hidden health benefits of consuming a daily cup of Joe. In truth, coffee is actually pretty healthy - it is packed with antioxidants and beneficial nutrients. What's more, studies show that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of developing serious diseases.
Read on to discover the 12 reasons you should wake up to a delectable cup of coffee:

1. It's great for the liver
In 2006, a study that included 125,000 people aged 22 and over found those who drank at least one cup of coffee a day were 20 percent less likely to develop liver cirrhosis - an autoimmune disease caused by excessive alcohol consumption that can lead to liver failure and cancer. Studies have also shown that consuming coffee regularly (four or more cups a day) may help prevent people from developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

2. It  Reduces Chances of Skin Cancer

..if you are a woman. A study conducted by Bringham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, followed 112,897 men and women over a 20-year period. They discovered that women who drank more than three cups of coffee a day were less likely to develop skin cancer than those who didn't.

3. Reduces your chances of  Type 2 Diabetes

According to a study from the American Chemical Society, drinking coffee may reduce your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes. Researchers found that people who drink four or more cups of coffee a day reduce their chances of developing Type 2 diabetes by 50 percent.

4. It keeps your brain healthier for longer

Studies conducted on a group of people aged 65 and older at the University of South Florida and the University of Miami respectively found that those with higher levels of caffeine in their blood developed Alzheimer's disease two to four years later than those with lower levels of caffeine. The study's co-author and neuroscientist, Dr Chuanhai Cao, reported he firmly believed that moderate coffee consumption can appreciably reduce your risk of Alzheimer's or delay its onset.

5. It can make you more Intelligent

Coffee is renowned for its quick-fix energy-boosting effects. However, aside from giving you a much-needed jolt, coffee makes you sharper. According to CNN, coffee allows your brain to work in a more efficient and smarter way. It improves your reaction time, vigilance, attention and logical reasoning.

6. It reduces you risk  of Heart Disease

In a study conducted by Korean researchers, participants who consumed three to five cups of Joe a day were less likely to show the first signs of heart disease. However, it is important to consider other dietary factors too, as Koreans typically have a different diet to Westerners.

7. It reduces your risk of Multiple Sclerosis

Recent studies have shown that four cups of coffee a day may help protect against the development and re-occurrence of Multiple Sclerosis. It is believed that coffee prevents neural inflammation, which may lead to the disease.

8. It reduces your risk of Colorectal cancer

Consuming coffee can reduce the chances of developing colorectal cancer by 26 percent. According to one study, the more coffee you consume the lower the risk.

9. It contains more antioxidants that fruits and vegetables

A study conducted in 2005 found that nothing comes close to providing as many antioxidants as coffee. While fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants, the human body absorbs the most from coffee.

10. It can lessen the symptoms of Parkinson's

Studies show that people who consume caffeine are less likely to develop Parkinson's. It also stated that drinking coffee may help people with Parkinson's disease control their movement.

11. The scent of coffee can reduce stress

Research conducted at the Seoul National University examined the brains of rats who were stressed as a result of sleep deprivation. The study found that those who were exposed to coffee aromas experienced changes in brain proteins tied to that stress.

12. It boosts your mood

A study by the National Institute of Health found that those who drank more than four cups of java a day were less likely to be depressed. Coffee's mood boosting benefits do not occur due to the 'caffeine high', rather coffee makes you feel good due to its trusty antioxidants.

Artificial Pancreas To Boost Diabetes Treatment

Australian researchers have created the world’s first machine intelligent artificial pancreas that could improve insulin dosing for diabetics. According to researchers, the artificial intelligence-based (AI) technique can also transform the way aeroplane engine’s wear & tear is monitored. “Our technology can recommend the best insulin dosage to keep each individual patient’s blood glucose levels under control with unprecedented stability and safety,” he said. “It will allow for better and more accurate treatment than we’ve ever seen,” he said.

The researchers also applied the same AI technique to aviation turbine engines and their related systems to predict engine component degradation and plan services to improve performance. The AI “allows us to evolve computational models of aviation engines as if they were organisms and it can explain explicitly what it thinks is happening inside the engine”, said a mechanical engineer. The researcher said the AI system learns by forcing mathematical models to evolve, quite literally by using simulated chromosomes, to fit known information.

Teen Invents Bra That Can Detect Breast Cancer Early

Julian Rios Cantu, a nineteen-year-old boy from Mexico, has invented a bra that is predicted to act as an early warning system for breast cancer symptoms. The young man was inspired by the unfortunate experiences his own mother had to go through as a breast cancer survivor. She was originally diagnosed when he was thirteen years old. However, her symptoms were not detected early enough. Though a doctor had found lumps in her breasts, he claimed they were malignant, though they were, in actuality, not. A second examination revealed they were indeed cancerous. Therefore, she lost both her breasts to cancer through a traumatic series of events that has left her emotionally, mentally, and physically scarred. Now, he is out to ensure other women don't have to go through the same pain.

He said, "My mom could have had a better outcome if she had been diagnosed earlier, but because of the high density of her breasts, the X-ray missed the tumors. At that moment I realized that if that was the case for a woman with private insurance and a prevention mindset, then for most women in developing countries, like Mexico where we’re from, the outcome could’ve not been a mastectomy but death." In countries with limited access to medical professionals, this could become very dangerous.

At first, he spent a few months researching the illness to the best of his abilities, making sure he was up to date on all the current diagnostic practices. Thereafter, he invented the idea of a bra that would be able to detect signs of breast cancer early on. The next few steps were much easier — he simply filed a patent, got a few friends together in order to help him run the business, and finally set out to develop his final product. The bra is expected to go on sale at any time now, but pre-orders have already begun on their official website.

The company Cantu and his three friends established is known as Higia Technologies. The high-tech bra has been named EVA, and is described as "the first intelligent, portable, and non-invasive wearable designed to detect abnormalities in the thermal patterns of the breast, an indicator for the possible presence of breast cancer." The EVA bra is equipped with sensors used to collect thermal data from the surface of the breasts. The data is then utilized to map the thermal patterns of a patient's breasts.

These thermal patterns can indicate whether a tumor is present or not as tumors emit a greater heat than "normal" because they have an elevated rate of cellular reproduction. Higia explains, "This causes a hot zone around the tumor that EVA analyzes to generate a risk evaluation through Artificial Intelligence algorithms. Our Artificial Intelligence algorithms, then, generate a risk evaluation in a matter of minutes." Not only is this easier than making a visit to the doctor, but it is also more reliable.

The reason why the bra is so effective is that it makes the self-examination just that much more standardized. As their official website describes it, "This allows a professionalization of the auto-examination, complementing the conventional methods of diagnosis and screening." While many women may already know how to complete a breast examination themselves, they may not be doing so correctly. The EVA bra erases any chance of human and/or layman error through the power of technology.

The bra has already undergone stringent testing in order to understand how well the wearable tech works. As of now, Higia Technologies reports that the sensibility of the EVA bra stands at 87.9% while its specificity is at 81.7%. The study included data collected from 153 women with 33 of them having breast cancer confirmed through a mammogram or biopsy. The process used to conduct the study was a cross-validation system. In the near future, Higia hopes to continue conducting clinical trials in Mexico and abroad in collaboration with allies.

Better connections in the brain make people intelligent

Intelligent people have better connections in certain brain regions that are more strongly involved in the flow of information, a study has found.

Differences in cognitive abilities - and the resulting differences for example in academic success and professional careers - are attributed to a considerable degree to individual differences in intelligence.

The research,  shows that these differences go hand in hand with differences in the patterns of integration among functional modules of the brain.

Researchers combined brain scans from over 300 persons with modern graph theoretical network analysis methods to investigate the neurobiological basis of human intelligence.

They had earlier identified brain regions - among them the prefrontal cortex - in which activation changes are reliably linked to individual differences in intelligence.

Until recently, however, it was not possible to examine how such intelligence regions in the human brain are functionally interconnected.

Earlier this year, the team found that in more intelligent persons two brain regions involved in the cognitive processing of task-relevant information - the anterior insula and the anterior cingulate cortex - are connected more efficiently to the rest of the brain.

Another brain region, the junction area between temporal and parietal cortex that has been related to the shielding of thoughts against irrelevant information, is less strongly connected to the rest of the brain network.

"The different topological embedding of these regions into the brain network could make it easier for smarter persons to differentiate between important and irrelevant information - which would be advantageous for many cognitive challenges," said a researcher.

The study shows that in more intelligent persons certain brain regions are clearly more strongly involved in the exchange of information between different sub-networks of the brain in order for important information to be communicated quickly and efficiently.

On the other hand, the team also identified brain regions that are more strongly de-coupled from the rest of the network in more intelligent people. This may result in better protection against distracting and irrelevant inputs.

"We assume that network properties we have found in more intelligent persons help us to focus mentally and to ignore or suppress irrelevant, potentially distracting inputs," said a researcher.

"It is possible that due to their biological predispositions, some individuals develop brain networks that favor intelligent behaviors or more challenging cognitive tasks," she said.

"However, it is equally as likely that the frequent use of the brain for cognitively challenging tasks may positively influence the development of brain networks," she added.
