If a Child Lives With... Praise/ Criticism?

How we raise our grand-kids can affect how they turn out as adults. We all want our kids to be strong, independent and certain of themselves but how should we go about it? While there are no hard and fast rules, keeping these essential tips in mind will surely help.

1) If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn.

2) If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight.

3) If a child lives with shame, he learns to feel guilty.

4) If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient.

5) If a child lives with encouragement, he learns to be confident.

6) If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate.

7) If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice.

8) If a child lives with approval, he learns to like himself.

9) If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to find love in the world.

Negative mood may signal poor health

Negative mood, such as sadness and anger, is associated with higher levels of inflammation and may be a signal of poor health, according to a study.

Researchers found that negative mood measured multiple times a day over time is associated with higher levels of inflammatory biomarkers.

This extends prior research showing that clinical depression and hostility are associated with higher inflammation.

Inflammation is part of the body’s immune response to such things as infections, wounds, and damage to tissues.

Chronic inflammation can contribute to numerous diseases and conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers.

The study, is the first examination of associations between both momentary and recalled measures of mood or affect with measures of inflammation.

Participants were asked to recall their feelings over a period of time in addition to reporting how they were feeling in the moment, in daily life.

These self-assessments were taken over a two-week period, then each was followed by a blood draw to measure markers that indicated inflammation.

A researcher found that negative mood accumulated from the week closer to the blood draw was associated with higher levels of inflammation.

Additional analyses also suggested that the timing of mood measurement relative to the blood draw mattered, he said.

Specifically, there were stronger trends of association between momentary negative affect and inflammation when negative mood was assessed closer in time to blood collection.

This work is novel because researchers not only used questionnaires that asked participants to recall their feelings over a period of time, they also asked participants how they were feeling in the moment, he said.

In addition, momentary positive mood from the same week was associated with lower levels of inflammation, but only among men in this study.

“We hope that this research will prompt investigators to include momentary measures of stress and affect in research examining inflammation, to replicate the current findings and help characterise the mechanisms underlying associations between affect and inflammation,” he said.

Playing Violent Video Games Linked to Impulsive Behavior

The fast-paced decision making required in so-called first-person shooter video games improves visual skills but may reduce a person's ability to control impulsive behaviour, according to new research.
The findings suggest another way that violent video games can increase aggressive behaviour, according to the authors of three new studies.
"These studies are the first to link violent video game play with both beneficial and harmful effects within the same study,"  said  a researcher.
In one study, researchers had volunteers play either a fast-paced violent video game, a slow-paced peaceful game, or no game during ten 50-minute sessions over 11 weeks. Compared to participants who played the peaceful game or no game, those who played the action game showed increases in visual skills but decreases in impulse control.
In another study, the researchers assessed the TV viewing and video game habits of 422 people. They found that total media exposure and violent media exposure both contributed to attention problems. Violent media exposure was directly associated with increased aggression and anger/hostility, but there was no significant link between total media exposure and aggression or anger/hostility.
In general, TV, movies and video games often feature rapid changes in images and sounds, which essentially trains the brain to respond to a fast pace, he explained. Quick reactions are particularly important when playing violent video games.
"What such fast-paced media fail to train is inhibiting the almost automatic first response," he explained.
This type of research could lead to new ways to help people control their anger and aggression, he suggested.
However, although the researchers found associations between media exposure and behaviour, this does not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Bosses who exercise are nicer to employees

If your boss is giving you a hard time, gift him/her with a pair of running shoes. Stressed bosses who exercise are less likely to vent their frustration on their employees than those who don’t.

As expected, the more stressed the supervisors, the more likely were their subordinates to feel victimized. Interestingly, the study found that only moderate levels of exercise were necessary to minimize abusive supervision, such as working out one to two days a week. All types of exercise- working out in a gym, swimming, playing a sport, or running- buffered the hostility between the boss & employee.
