10 Foods That The World’s Longest Living People Eat

There are certain regions on Earth where people seem to live much longer than the rest of the population. Curiously, one of the distinguishing characteristics of these areas is the inhabitants’ diet. Even more interestingly, it has been established that many of the staple food varieties consumed by these longest-living and often healthiest people in the world are really similar, with all 10 of the foods discussed on the list to follow presumably playing an extremely important role in the health and longevity of these individuals.
10 Foods That The World’s Longest Living People Eat
Blue Zones Around the World
Such regions include the island of Sardinia in Italy, as well as Okinawa, Japan, Loma Linda, California, and others (see map above). These places are often referred to as ‘blue zones’, a term coined by author and explorer Dan Buettner. In these regions, the average life expectancy exceeds that of its surrounding regions by decades.
For example, the average American lifespan across sexes is 78 years, but the members of the Loma Linda community in California live 11 years longer on average. The story is the same with all the rest of these locations, but the situation has reportedly changed for the communities in Okinawa and Sardinia where the younger generations started straying away from the traditional diet and life expectancy already started to drop.
However, even these two last examples are proof that it's precisely the traditional diet and nutrition habits in these regions that promote longevity and health, although activity levels and a sense of community are two overarching themes through all of these communities as well.
Still, in this article, we clearly focus on the diet aspect in these regions, namely the food and drink staples, 10 of which we discuss below:

1. Sweet Potato

10 Foods That The World’s Longest Living People Eat Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes make up a whopping 70% of the traditional Okinawa diet, where the average lifespan is 90 years. As a matter of fact, traditional Okinawan cuisine consists of a lot less rice than the rest of Japan, only 1 cup a day compared to 4.5 cups of yams. Both purple and orange sweet potatoes are used in recipes, and a common way of eating these would be by preparing them with sesame seed oil and green onions.
Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of carotenoids, potassium and B vitamins and are a lot more nutritious than regular potatoes. Yams have been associated with cardiovascular health and other benefits.

2. Nuts

10 Foods That The World’s Longest Living People Eat Nuts
A prominent feature in all of the blue zones are nuts, with the Loma Linda commune including nuts as an important protein source since their diet is vegetarian. Apart from being packed with proteins, nuts are also an excellent source of plant fats and other nutrients, with each nut variety having its own unique concoction of minerals and vitamins. Just two handfuls of any nuts of your liking a day will help you live a longer and healthier life.

3. Olive Oil

It's no secret that olive oil is a staple of Mediterranean cuisine, but it should also be noted that traditional Italian and Greek recipes from Sardinia and Icaria rarely use the oil for frying. Instead, olive oil is traditionally combined in salads and eaten with bread. The life expectancy in Icaria, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea where olive oil is a staple ingredient, is over 90 years.
Olive oil is one of the most well-researched plant oils, and it had been found to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities. The oil can also aid in preventing several chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, arthritis, some cancers and even Alzheimer's. You can learn more about the health effects of olive oil here:
4. Oats and Barley

Another group of ingredients prominent in the Loma Linda commune, which actually bases its diet on foods from Biblical times, are oats and barley, slow-cooked or steel-cut. These simple, yet effective foods are known to contain plenty of essential fiber, which ensures optimal digestion and promotes a healthy gut microbiome.
Oats, in particular, are known for their calming and anti-inflammatory effects on the human body. Oatmeal has been also associated with decreased cardiovascular risk and blood sugar-stabilizing properties.
5. Red Wine
Another common trait among many, although not all of the blue zones, is a low dose of alcohol, particularly dry red wine. Just one glass of wine with dinner is a common feature of Mediterranean regions in particular, and the polyphenols red wine contains are suggested to have a multitude of health effects, particularly a skin rejuvenating and an overall anti-aging effect.
Of course, moderation is key, as is the avoidance of overly sweet wine varieties, as these can be loaded in sugar. Polyphenols are also associated with digestive health, as well as prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular problems.

6. Cruciferous Vegetables

10 Foods That The World’s Longest Living People Eat broccoli
Mothers all over the world, rejoice! All those times you were forcing your kids to eat broccoli (and peas, but more on that later), you were absolutely right, as it seems like the most long-lived people on Earth eat a lot of broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and other cruciferous veggies.
These vegetables are very popular in Sardinia, Italy, where the high intake of cruciferous veggies was associated with a lower incidence of thyroid problems. Apart from that, these vegetables contain a ton of vitamins and other essential minerals, not to mention a lot of fiber, which makes them a must-have on any healthy meal plan.

7. Fruit (all kinds)

10 Foods That The World’s Longest Living People Eat a bowl of fruit and girl picking up a cherry
All of the long-living communities had this one thing in common - they ate a lot of fresh seasonal fruit. It's important to note that it's better to indulge in whole fruit than juicing them, as this way you'll be getting both the nutrients from every fruit variety and the added fiber. Any fruit variety will do either, so choose your favorite and munch away.

8. Leafy Greens (all kinds)

10 Foods That The World’s Longest Living People Eat Leafy Greens
Another mutual theme in all of the regions was an abundance of greens in nearly every meal. Greens are used as a garnish on top of meals and as salad bases. Greens (and seaweed) are especially appreciated in the Okinawa diet, as well as in the Icaria diet, where dandelion leaves, spinach, and fennel are combined with olive oil in a delicious side dish.
Greens have long established themselves as a health-boosting ingredient capable of stabilizing inflammation levels and containing lots of vitamins and antioxidants. Depending on the type of greens you choose, be it spinach, parsley, dill or lettuce, you will get a different mix of benefits, so we recommend combining and switching up your greens as much as you can.

9. Green and Herbal Tea

10 Foods That The World’s Longest Living People Eat
As one might expect, green tea is a staple drink in Okinawa, and the antioxidant-rich drink is renowned for its multitude of antioxidant and preventative benefits.
Apart from green tea, however, a common recurrence, particularly in the Greek diet is herbal tea, particularly sage tea. Notably, none of the two are typically sweetened in these regions, so it's best if you try adding as little sweetener as you can, too, preferably none whatsoever.

10. Legumes

10 Foods That The World’s Longest Living People Eat legumes beans
Did we leave the best for last? Certainly so, as one of the main common ingredients in all of the regions of exceptional longevity are legumes. Moreover, beans, peas, lentils, chickpeas, and soy products are often the dominant, if not the only protein source in these diets.
In Okinawa, soy products, such as tofu, natto, miso, and edamame make up 5% of the entire diet, more than both meat and fish combined. The Californian group abstains from meat completely, and in the rest of the regions, meat is a rare treat while beans are a daily staple.
On average, people in the blue zones eat about 1 cup of beans or legumes on a daily basis, with the Nicoya group from Costa Rica preparing them in a corn tortilla while the Mediterranean groups typically favor lentils and chickpeas as a daily staple, so if you take one lesson from this article, it's to eat more legumes.

‘Pollution’s dangers can be passed on to next generation’

Parent’s exposure to dirty air before conceiving could have a negative impact on the heart health of the offspring later in life.
These are the findings of a study in mice.

Wondering about the possible health risks for children of people routinely exposed to highly polluted air, including soldiers and residents of some of the world’s largest cities, the researchers studied the effects of dirty air on mice. And they found an abundance of evidence of harm to the offspring of parents that routinely breathed dirty air prior to mating.

“We found that these offspring had a variety of heart problems during the prime of their lives and the effects were so robust that it was somewhat shocking,” said study senior author.

Heart function was impaired. Inflammatory markers linked to increased heart disease risk were high. They had markers of oxidative stress, a condition in which levels of beneficial antioxidants are low. Calcium regulatory proteins, which are critical to the function of the beating heart, were altered. And these mice were young and otherwise healthy – comparable to 20-year-old humans.

“This suggests that heart problems related to pollution exposure could start even before conception, and if that’s true it has implications worldwide,” said the author.

The team also uncovered evidence of gene-related differences that might explain the cardiovascular changes they saw. They examined epigenetic regulators, which play an important role in the expression of genes – meaning that they have influence over predisposition to health problems, including cardiovascular disease.

“I looked at important epigenetic regulators in the offspring, and some were activated, which could explain the differences we saw. The next step will be a more detailed analysis,” said study lead author.

“A key question here is how are changes in the sperm and eggs passing on the information to the offspring to cause this heart dysfunction?” he said.

Though more animal research is needed, this study also opens the door to exploring the role of air pollution on the health of future generations, he said. For instance, it might make sense to begin by working with adults with high levels of exposure to particulate matter, such as residents of New Delhi and Beijing, he added.

“We already know that humans have dramatic cardiovascular effects from exposure to dirty air, high blood pressure in particular. And we know that babies can be harmed by pollution both before and after birth,” he further added.

“Understanding whether the damage may begin even before conception is critical,” he concluded.

Did you know that laughing can help you lose belly fat?

Indeed the deep-rooted belly laugh is one of the best feelings in the world, perhaps, the best medicine. Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain and even helps you lose weight and tone your belly. It is also a great antidote to stress. Of course, laughter is the best way to bring people together and form strong bonds. To raise awareness about laughter and its many health benefits, World Laughter Day is celebrated worldwide on the first Sunday of May of every year. With so much power to heal and repair, being able to laugh easily and frequently may be a tremendous resource for combating problems, and enhancing overall health - both physically and mentally. Science has shown that this involuntary reaction to certain external or internal stimuli can even add years to your life. So, if you want to yield those benefits, you better learn to laugh, even in times of struggle. So, keep laughing, this priceless medicine is fun and free, no charge required.

Health benefits of laughter
Here, we list some of the unbelievable health benefits of laughter you probably didn't know:
Lowers blood pressure
One study suggested that laughter is heart-healthy as it has been shown to lower the systolic blood pressure (the top number in the reading) in people who took part in bimonthly group sessions built around music or laughter. Lowering your blood pressure reduces your risk of stroke and heart attack.
Tones your tummy
You might be surprised to learn that laughing can also help you lose weight and reduce belly fat. The fact is that as you laugh, the muscles in your belly expand and contract fully, which is exactly like exercising your abs. Actually, one study showed that laughing for 10 to 15 minutes every day can help a person burn about 40 calories - which is equivalent to losing three or four pounds over the course of a year. Laughter can be a natural way to exercise various muscles in your body, and thus, aiding you in weight loss.
Improves metabolism
Laughter reduces the levels of stress hormone cortisol, which lowers the metabolism and stores fat in the midsection. This means, laughter will help improve your metabolism naturally, which in turn, influences your body to burn more calories and lose weight.
Boosts immune system
Studies suggest that people who regularly laugh have increased levels of T-cells, which help protect the body from infections, thereby improving resistance to sickness. Laughter can stimulate the antibody cells to develop at faster rates and help stop intruders from harming the body.
Helps you live longer
Considering how a good laugh can actually affect your health - be it your stress levels or overall wellness - studies suggest that indulging your sense of humour may help you live a healthier life and extend your lifespan. According to a large study published recently, women with a strong sense of humour were found to live longer in spite of illness, particularly cardiovascular disease and infection.

8 Great Health Benefits of Green Tea

Every day it seems like there is a new natural remedy being touted by doctors, magazines, and your friends. However, green tea doesn’t seem to be a passing fad: It has been consumed all over Asia for centuries and over the last decade, tons of research has linked green tea to a range of health benefits. Below are 8 of them:

1. Helps Prevent Multiple Cancers
Research on the benefits of green tea and cancer prevention is still in the early stages, but the results are promising. Researchers suspect that the polyphenols in green tea help to destroy cancer cells and stop their progression, a very important role in the prevention of various cancers.
In a study of 472 women suffering from breast cancer, those who drank the most green tea experienced the least spread of the disease. Researchers also found that women in the early stages of breast cancer who drank at least five cups of green tea per day during their diagnoses were less likely to have the disease recur after their treatment was completed.
One study found that men who drank more than three cups of green tea per day reduced their risk of prostate cancer by 70%. In another study funded by the National Institute of Health, 79 men with prostate cancer were told to either drink six cups of green tea a day or six cups of water. After 3-8 weeks, the levels of prostate-specific antigen, a protein that may indicate cancer, were lower in the men who drank green tea than those who drank water.
2. Makes Your Heart Healthier
Green tea contains a significant amount of antioxidants and flavonoids that help protect against heart disease by slowing the breakdown of LDL cholesterol, improving blood vessel function, and preventing blood clots.
The benefits of green tea also include lower rates of artery blockages. For example, those who drink a cup or two a day have a 46% lower chance of developing narrowed arteries. Increasing that to three cups a day lowers the risk of having a heart attack by 43% and dying from a heart attack by 70%.
Green tea can even help prevent a second heart attack. In a study of 1,900 patients recovering from heart attacks at a Medical Center, the death rate among patients who drank at least two cups of green tea per day was 44% lower than among non-tea drinkers.
3. Soothes Arthritis
To decrease your aches and pains, try sipping four cups of green tea per day. Green tea contains quercetin, a chemical compound that acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
In a recent study conducted  researchers gave mice the equivalent of four cups of green tea a day, then gave them a substance that would normally produce rheumatoid arthritis. The tea-drinking mice were far less likely to develop arthritis than mice that drank only water.
According to another Health Study, women who drink more than three cups of tea a day are 60% less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than those who don’t drink green tea.

4. Boosts Your Brain
Researchers confirmed in a recent study that two green tea compounds, L-theanine and caffeine, can significantly increase levels of alertness and attention, building on what is already known about the brain benefits of green tea.
This drink is less likely to make you jittery and anxious when compared to other energy-boosting drinks because it contains lower levels of caffeine.
In a study published, researchers discovered that drinking just one cup of green tea per day made people over the age of 55, 38% less likely to experience a decline in cognitive abilities.
5. Fight a Urinary Tract Infection
Drinking just two or three cups of green tea each day can help clear up a urinary tract infection. Green tea contains antioxidants that one study found can help reduce bladder inflammation. Other studies have shown that those who drink green tea regularly have a 40% lower incidence of UTIs than those who don’t drink green tea.

6. Relieves Allergies
Another benefit of green tea is that it is rich in flavonoids (plant chemicals that help protect against inflammation). Therefore, if you’re struggling with allergies, you should try drinking a couple of cups of green tea per day to see if the sinus inflammation decreases.
7. Reduces Asthma Symptoms
Quercetin, an antioxidant found in green tea, has been shown to inhibit the release of inflammatory substances from masts cells, which are involved in allergic responses. This is exactly how asthma medication works, so try drinking a couple of cups of green tea each day in order to keep your asthma symptoms at bay.
8. Cuts Down on Stress
Since green tea has lower levels of caffeine than most other teas, you might be able to drink the five cups per day that lowered psychological stress in a large group of  people in a recent study that was carried.
The researchers couldn’t identify any particular component of green tea that might be soothing, but animal studies suggest that one compound, EGCC, has both sedative and hypnotic effects that turn down the body’s production of stress chemicals.
