Plant-based diet effective in reducing gingivitis

A new study revealed that plant based diet was effective in reducing gingivitis. The trial was published recently. Study results clearly demonstrates the possibility to naturally reduce gingivitis by an optimised diet that also promotes general health, said lead author of the study.

The trial incorporated 30 patients already suffering from gingivitis in an experimental and controlled group. The patients were put on the said diet for 4 weeks. The new diet included low processed carbohydrates and animal proteins, rich omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamins C and D, antioxidants, plant nitrates and fibres.

The groups experienced a notable drop in bleeding due to gingivitis. The group also depicted an increase in Vitamin D values and slight weight loss. He further added, "According to this, dental teams should address dietary habits and give adequate recommendations in the treatment of gingivitis, since it might be a side-effect of a pro-inflammatory western diet".

What’s the Difference Between Alzheimer’s and Dementia?

The terms “Alzheimer’s” and “dementia” are often used interchangeably. But the two conditions are actually quite different. You can think of the distinction in terms of an analogy to squares and rectangles. All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. Similarly, Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia — but not all dementia qualifies as Alzheimer’s.

Dementia is something of an umbrella term. It refers to a wide range of symptoms, including memory loss, diminishing attention span, difficulty focusing, and poor judgement. The symptoms of dementia disrupt a person’s ability to live a normal life.

People often assume that Alzheimer’s is a worsened state of dementia — that dementia occurs first, in a more mild form, and Alzheimer’s may follow. But that’s not really true. Alzheimer’s is not the only kind of dementia there is. Other forms of dementia include conditions such as Huntington’s disease or Parkinson’s. Additionally, the terms are nonspecific to severity or need for treatment. A person can have dementia that is “worse” than another person’s Alzheimer’s. Conversely, it is possible to have Alzheimer’s that has progressed further than someone else’s dementia.

But Alzheimer’s is definitely the most common risk for cognitive decline, responsible for the majority of dementia cases. Patients with Alzheimer’s suffer memory loss and confusion due to a buildup of plaques and fibres in the brain. These compounds can get in the way of nerve signals and destroy nerve cells. Once these cells are destroyed, they cannot be regrown.

Alzheimer’s can be prevented and its progression can be slowed — but unfortunately, the disease is irreversible and cannot be cured. Watching out for the little-known warning signs of the disease is probably a good idea as you or your loved ones age.

So how does one prevent these conditions? The best tips to prevent Alzheimer’s and to stave off dementia are also pretty similar. Many of these preventative measures include lifestyle habits, such as getting enough sleep and engaging in physical exercise. But the foods you eat could have an impact, too. These foods could help lower your chances of cognitive decline.

Prebiotics May Help You Beat Stress and Get Good Sleep

What are prebiotic really? Are they a food fad? While people were just about warming up to the concept of probiotics, there suddenly came in prebiotics claiming to be better than the other. Gut bacteria or probiotics need to feed on certain fibers in order to perform better and help improve your gut environment so as various metabolic processes can be carried out efficiently by the body. But the acidic content of our stomach most often hampers the growth of these microorganisms, along with our habits such as drinking hot tea. Prebiotics are basically non digestible food ingredients (such as the fibers found in many plant sources like asparagus, oatmeal, and legumes as well as in breast milk ) that are selectively metabolised by colonic bacteria which have the capacity to improve our gut environment. Unlike probiotics, they can be added to many ingredients and heated too.

While the beneficial role of prebiotics in helping the gut bacteria are being raved about, a recent study shows that eating prebiotics can restore healthy sleep patterns after a stressful event. The study was conducted by a group of researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder, and published in the journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience.

The findings showed that stress could upset the gut's microbiome, as well as restful sleep - essential elements for a healthy life. A diet rich in prebiotics was found to increase beneficial bacteria as well as protect gut microbes from stress-induced disruptions. In addition prebiotics also lead to the recovery of normal sleep patterns, since they tend to be disrupted after stressful events.

"Acute stress can disrupt the gut microbiome," said Agnieszka Mika, postdoctoral fellow at the University of Colorado Boulder, in the US. "So far no adverse effects from prebiotics have been reported," Mika added.

For the study, the team tested rats that received prebiotic diets for several weeks prior to a stressful test condition and compared with control rats that did not receive the prebiotic-enriched diet. The rats that ate prebiotics prior to the stressful event did not experience stress-induced disruption in their gut microbiota and also recovered healthier sleep patterns sooner than controls, the researchers said.

As the stressor that the rats received was the equivalent of a single intense acute stressful episode for humans, such as a car accident or the death of a loved one, the results may be relevant in humans, noted Robert S. Thompson from the University of Colorado Boulder.

Health benefits of Star Fruit

These exotic fruits are high in vitamin C and potassium. Furthermore, they have an abundance of inflammation-lowering polyphenols, which makes them great for your heart. Most of the star fruit that you can find in stores across America come from Florida or Hawaii.

The taste of this fruit has been described as somewhere between that of citrus, apple, and pear. You can eat this tasty fruit as it is, or you can add some to a fruit salad.

When buying this fruit, look for firm, shiny, and evenly colored yellow fruit. Remember to handle the fruit with care as it's easily bruised. Let the fruit ripen at room temperature for a few days until they start to go brown on the edges and develop a fruity aroma (this is when they are at their sweetest), then refrigerate them for up to a week.

 Health Benefits:
1. The star fruit is a literal one-stop medicine shop. It’s used the world over as a home remedy for hangovers and sunburns. It works well on coughs, fever, ulcers and sore throats. It also effectively combats diabetes. The leaves of star fruit can be used to treat stomach ulcers, pus-filled skin inflammations and boils. It improves digestion. Flowers of the sweet star fruit are good for treating coughs in children.
2. . Star fruit contains an antimicrobial agent  which fights the microbial bacillus cereus, e.coli, salmonella typhus, etc. It also cures eczema.3. With only 30 calories per fruit plus lots of fibre, star fruit, like kokum and passion fruit, is a great choice for anyone trying to lose weight. It contains 9.5g of carbohydrate per serving, including 2.5g of dietary fibre. This provides 3% of the daily requirement for carbohydrates and 10% of the daily requirement for dietary fibre. They’re also full of antioxidants and flavonoids.
4. In addition to vitamins A, B and C, that help keep the metabolism of the body steady and strong, star fruit also has thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin in very small concentrations. It’s a good source of vitamin B9 (folic acid), which helps reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, and it also contains vitamin C and vitamin B.
5. . It has low amounts of all essential minerals but is especially rich in copper (14% of Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) in one medium sized fruit). Star fruit lowers cholesterol levels and adds bulk and moisture to feces .
6. The fruit has also been used to treat sore eyes. If you are looking to up the magnesium content in your diet, then eat food rich in vitamin B6 along with star fruit.
7. This ‘magic’ fruit is given to lactating mothers as it is commonly believed to stimulate the flow of milk. A decoction of its leaves and roots (prepared separately or in combination) can help cure headaches, ringworm, and chicken pox. To cure nausea and indigestion, eat half a piece of the fruit and repeat the dose after three hours .
8. But if you have a renal complaint, then the star fruit is not for you, because it has a very high concentration of oxalic acid. Scientists consider it an anti-nutrient compound as it interferes with absorption and metabolism of several natural minerals such as calcium, magnesium, etc.
9. Like grapefruit, the star fruit may interfere with the medications you take for other illnesses. If on prescription, make sure to consult your doctor first.
10. Star fruit allows other nutrients that are good for the body and hair to circulate more freely. It’s an excellent natural cure for hair loss since it is a good source of antioxidants and vitamin C which can help delay the natural ageing process.
11. B-complex vitamin, which is essential for hair growth and help in keeping hair strong and healthy, is abundantly available in start fruit.
12. Eat a star fruit or use it directly on acne-prone skin or oily skin as a face mask, it benefits the skin both ways.
13. It purifies the blood, making the skin glow .
Star fruit contains zinc which reduces a tendency towards acne breakouts. It’s wholly recommended for people of all ages as it has antimicrobial effects.

Natural Ways to Whiten Your Teeth

We all love seeing white, pearly smiles, and would love for our teeth to shine. However, our coffee, nicotine and other habits make this extremely difficult, and we end up with either stained or yellow teeth, that make us feel we are not getting our money's worth out of our smile! Although there are many whitening products, they don't all work and some have nasty side-effects.
Here are 10 natural solutions that will whiten your teeth without subjecting your to other problems.

1. Carbon powder
Carbon is an absorbing material, which is capable of absorbing toxins, chemicals and acidic stains, leading them out of the body through the excretion system. Since it doesn't absorb into the body but only passes the digestion system, it is considered an effective solution to clean toxins. The same effect applies in the mouth cavity. Not only does the carbon help prevent gum disease and kills bacteria in the mouth, it can also whiten our teeth by absorbing the stains that accumulate on the tooth.

Dip a clean wet tooth brush in carbon powder and clean your teeth with little circular motions for 2 minutes. Then carefully and thoroughly rinse your mouth until all the powder is gone. Don't worry, it comes right off!

2. Aloe

The aloe plant has a long history as a healing agent, and although it is most known as skin medicine, recent research indicates it might be great for our teeth and gums. In 2009, the Academy for general dentisty in the US, found that smearing some aloe gel on the teeth may purify and calm down inflammation, as well as operate against bacteria. In addition, it was found that it can be used as a natural tooth whitener.

The best way to do so is use an extract of the center of the leaf. It's popularity as a tooth whitener has risen in recent years.

Please Note: Do not swallow the aloe gel as it may cause stomach cramps. Also, it is not recommend for use by pregnant women.

3. Banana

Another natural solution to whitening our teeth is found in the form of the banana peel. Research has found that the minerals inside the peel, such as Potassium and bromine, help whiten the teeth naturally without doing damage.

Cut the peel to little pieces, then rub the internal side of the banana on your teeth and do nothing for 15 minutes. Then rinse your mouth well. Some say the same can be achieved with an orange peel, and the same procedure applies.

4. Drinking Soda

One of the most common natural whitening solutions is drinking soda. Some mix it with regular toothpaste until a lumpy texture is achieved while some mix it with 3% Hydrogen peroxide, which serve as an anti-bacterial agent and keep the teeth and gum safe from bacteria.

5. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide can be used as its own whitening agent, if used as mouth wash. use a mix of 1:1 water and hydrogen peroxide and gurgle for about a minute. This will also neutralize bad odors and cleanse the mouth from bacteria.

6. Strawberries

One of the most popular solutions is the strawberry. The secret to this method is the malic acid found in the strawberry and which removes stains from the tooth coating, even hard stains like wine, cigarette and coffee stains. The method is to crush the strawberries to a pulp and then mix with drinking soda to get a thick and homogenous mixture.

Use a soft toothbrush to spread the mixture on the teeth. Leave for 5 minutes and then brush throughly with regular toothpaste to remove the rest of the mixture. If needed, use dental floss to get rid of any strawberry seeds.

However, don't over-use this method, as over time it can damage your tooth coating.

7. Fibers

Many believe that eating foods rich in fiber, like: Apples, pears, carrots, celery, broccoli and lettuce - can be used as a peeling technique for the teeth. The vitamins and minerals in these foods clean the tooth without damaging its coating.

8. Dairy Products

Recent research supports the recommendation to eat a small amount of cheese after a meal, as the calcium and phosphorus increase the tooth mineral coating, creating more white teeth. Milk and yogurt help keep the mouth cavity clean and shiny, and also strenghten the teeth.

9. Olive Oil

Many will testify to the usefullness of olive oil in whitening the teeth. THere are 2 ways to use it before brushing our teeth.

One: Add a few drops to your tooth brush.
Two: Drip a few drops of olive oil on a clean hand towel and smear on the teeth.

10. Apple Vinegar

Apple vinegar can get insistent stains out, especially affective against coffee and nicotine stains. The result is not immediate, but with time (and after rinsing to make sure the acidity doesn't damage the teeth), you will see some nice results. After using it, though, brush and rinse throughly.

Tumour ‘monorail’ may spell doom for cancer cells

Activity requires a significant amount of energy from the cancer cells.

Indian-origin scientists have successfully developed a radical new technique that may kill brain tumours by hijacking them into toxic pits or areas of the body that are safer to operate on.
One factor that makes glioblastoma cancers so difficult to treat is that malignant cells from the tumours spread throughout the brain by following nerve fibres and blood vessels to invade new locations. Now, researchers have learned to hijack this migratory mechanism, turning it against the cancer by using a film of nanofibres thinner than human hair to lure tumour cells away.
Instead of invading new areas, the migrating cells latch onto the specially-designed nanofibres and follow them to a location – potentially outside the brain – where they can be captured and killed. Using this technique, researchers can partially move tumours from inoperable locations to more accessible ones. Though it would not eliminate the cancer, the new technique reduced the size of brain tumours in animal models, suggesting that this form of brain cancer might one day be treated more like a chronic disease, researchers said.
“We have designed a polymer thin film nanofibre that mimics the structure of nerves and blood vessels that brain tumour cells normally use to invade other parts of the brain,” said Ravi Bellamkonda, lead investigator and chair of the Wallace H Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University.

“The cancer cells normally latch onto these natural structures and ride them like a monorail to other parts of the brain. By providing an attractive alternative fibre, we can efficiently move the tumours along a different path to a destination that we choose,” said Bellamkonda.
Treating the Glioblastoma multiforme cancer, also known as GBM, is difficult because the aggressive and invasive cancer often develops in parts of the brain where surgeons are reluctant to operate.
Even if the primary tumour can be removed, however, it has often spread to other locations before being diagnosed. “The signalling pathways we were trying to activate to repair the spinal cord were the same pathways researchers would like to inactivate for glioblastomas,” said first author of the study, Anjana Jain, an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts.

Tumour cells typically invade healthy tissue by secreting enzymes that allow the invasion to take place, Jain said. That activity requires a significant amount of energy from the cancer cells.
“Our idea was to give the tumour cells a path of least resistance, one that resembles the natural structures in the brain, but is attractive because it does not require the cancer cells to expend any more energy,” she said. Details of the technique were reported in the journal Nature Materials.
