Menstrual cycle influences sleep quality in women

Young women are more likely to experience sleep disruption in the days leading up to their menstrual period, a study has found.

" Sleep is  more disrupted in the several days directly prior to menses in young healthy women," said a researcher.

" Increased sleep disruption was found in the late luteal phase, which corresponds with the days directly prior to menses," said the researcher.

Menstrual phase affected sleep efficiency, wake after sleep onset (WASO), number of awakening per night, and sleep fragmentation index, in keeping with increased sleep disruption in the late luteal phase.

Compared with the early follicular phase, sleep efficiency decreased by 3.3 %, WASO increased by 15 minutes, and the number of awakenings per night increased by 3 in the late luteal phase.

Researchers collected daily sleep data from 10 healthy women between the ages of 18-28 who had regular menstrual cycles. The researchers tracked the women\s sleep during 2 of their cycles.

The women wore actigraphic sensors on their wrist to record patterns of activity and rest over 578 sleep episodes and they provided morning urine samples for measurement of concentration of luteinizing hormone (LH), estrone-3-glucuronide (EIG) andpregnanediol-3-glucuronide (PDG).
All participants ovulated in both cycles.

The women also completed 5 day diets during the early follicular phases of each cycle. The diet during one cycle contained neutral energy availability, and the diet during the other cycle contained 55% fewer calories.

Menstrual cycle lengths were standardized to 14 day follicular and 14 day luteal phases, centered on the day of ovulation.

" Short term caloric restriction had negative effects on sleep in both the late follicular phase, just before ovulation, and in the late luteal phase, just before the onset of menses, " said the researcher who performed this study.

Decreased energy availability increased sleep disruption, with less sleep efficiency, greater WASO and a higher sleep fragmentation index in the late follicular phase in addition to the effects noted above in the late luteal phase.

It is likely these effects are mediated by the dynamic changes in ovarian hormones across the menstrual cycle.

Their study found that EIG was linked with more awakenings, and PDG was linked with a trend toward higher sleep fragmentation index.

The study validates perceptions using objective measures, and further documents the negative impact of dieting on sleep.

" These findings suggest that women need to be particularly cognisant pf practising good sleep hygiene in the week before menses and with decreased caloric intake," she noted.

Alzheimer protein can be transmitted

A study into proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease has flagged the contamination of surgical instruments during brain operations, after researchers found that the proteins could potentially be transmitted.

The current study, done by a team, follows up on one conducted in 2015 when researchers examined brains of individuals who had died due to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD). These individuals had been treated with growth hormones in their childhood, and until 1985, such hormones were derived from the brains of deceased persons.

The 2015 findings found links between the growth hormone injections and deposits of beta-amyloid proteins in the individuals. Such deposits are regarded as a hallmark of the Alzheimer’s disease.

For the current study, the researchers tracked down old stocks of the growth hormone and found some of the samples to contain significant levels of beta-amyloid proteins and tau proteins — presence of both these proteins is crucial for diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. In further experiments, the team injected the contaminated hormones into the brain of mice that had been genetically modified. The mice brain later developed clumps of protein typical of Alzheimer’s.

Groups of the same mice that had been injected with synthetic growth hormone showed no such patterns. These findings support the hypothesis that beta-amyloid proteins were accidentally transmitted to patients through this medical treatment, which is now defunct.

"It is well known that the abnormal proteins seen in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease have been transmitted between patients by certain medical and surgical procedures. We have been investigating whether the same can be true for amyloid beta," says one of the authors of the study.

“We have found new evidence that amyloid beta pathology may be transmissible. This does not mean that Alzheimer's disease can be transmitted, as we did not find any significant amount of pathological tau protein which is the other hallmark protein of Alzheimer's disease. Our findings relate to neurosurgical procedures done a long time ago. Nevertheless, the possibility of pathological protein transmission, while rare, should factor into reviews of sterilisation and safety practices for surgical procedures."

One of the authors, adds in a press note: “It is most important to emphasise that there is no suggestion in our work that you can catch Alzheimer’s disease (or CJD) by contact with a person with the disease. Our findings highlight the need to do further research in this area.”

He says further: “We suggested that the human growth hormone—which prior to 1985 was prepared from human tissue—may have been contaminated with seeds of this material as well as the prions causing CJD… We have now provided experimental evidence to support our hypothesis that amyloid beta pathology can be transmitted to people from contaminated materials.

We cannot yet confirm whether medical or surgical procedures have ever caused Alzheimer’s disease itself in people, or how common it might be to acquire amyloid pathology in this way. It will be important to review risks of transmission of amyloid pathology by other medical procedures still done today, including instruments used in brain surgery, drawing on other research and what we already know about accidental CJD transmission.”

Time to conceive and fertility treatment may both affect a child's asthma risk

New European research has found that parents who take longer to get pregnant and who use fertility treatment may have children with a higher risk of developing asthma.

Carried out by Norwegian and UK researchers, the new large-scale study looked at data gathered from a total of 550,199 children.

Children were defined as having asthma if they had used asthma drugs in the 12 months before they turned 7 years old.

The researchers also gathered data on parents’ fertility treatment, time to conception, number and timing of any previous miscarriages, and other potentially influential factors such as mother’s age, asthma, smoking during pregnancy, and weight before pregnancy.

The findings, showed that children who had been conceived with the help of fertility treatment were up to 42 per cent more likely to have asthma than children whose parents didn’t undergo any treatment.

However, when the children born as a result of fertility treatment were compared to those who were spontaneously conceived after more than 12 months, they were just 22 per cent more likely to have asthma.

The number of a woman’s previous miscarriages was also associated with an increased risk of asthma, with one miscarriage linked with a 7 per cent increased risk of the condition, and three or more linked to a 24 per cent heightened risk, although this was only found for miscarriages which occurred during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

The researchers commented that this suggests that poor fertility alone does not explain the increased asthma risk among the children conceived with the help of fertility treatment,
As an observational study, the researchers note that the findings cannot establish a cause and more research is now needed.

However, the findings are in line with those from previous studies, which have also suggested that children conceived with the aid of fertility treatment may be more prone to asthma.

It is still not clear whether it is the fertility treatment itself of factors associated with sub-fertility which may contribute to the increased risk.
