CBD, short for cannabidiol.
Now not only do we know that CBD works as an antipsychotic, we know it targets the areas of the brain that need to be targeted. This really gives us confidence, and it gives us scientific justification for large scale clinical trials," lead researcher on the study Sagnik Bhattacharyya tells Inverse

Scientists compared brain scan results of people with a diagnosis of psychosis and people without the disorder as they were doing a memory exercise. In the people with psychosis, the researchers found clear differences in the activity patterns in their prefrontal, mediotemporal, and striatal areas of the brain — those that regulate decision making, learning and memory. But when these participants were given a single dose of CBD, their brain activity patterns were more similar to those of people without the disorder.

The results provide insight into which part of the brain is affected by CBD and suggest CBD may curb symptoms of psychosis in the human brain.

The study was published Wednesday in Psychological Medicine.

Myth stating menstrual cycle lasts for 28 days busted

Remember how you learnt about the 28-day menstrual cycle in school? If you’ve been privileged to have period lessons at all, that is. Also recall how anything out of the 28-day time-frame was considered to be abnormal? Well, a new study suggests that all of this isn’t a common occurrence.

Natural Cycles, a contraceptive app joined hands with London's UCL to conduct a study on 600,000 cycles of about 125,000 women from Sweden, the US, and the UK. The research revealed that only 13 per cent of menstrual cycles were based on the 28-day framework. For about 65 per cent of participants, the cycles lasted between 25 to 30 days.

Professor Joyce Harper from the UCL Institute for Women's Health opined that the world’s understanding of menstrual cycles could be flawed. "Our study is unique in analysing over half a million cycles and rewriting our understanding of the key stages," she explained. "Traditionally, studies have concentrated on women who have approximately 28-day cycles. For the first time, our study shows that few women have the textbook 28-day cycle, with some experiencing very short or very long cycles."

The study also focused on the concept of fertility. Most of the people think that ovulation occurs on the 14th day of the menstrual cycle. However, this might not be completely true. The study discovered many differences in follicular phase length (the time from the first day of menstruation to ovulation).

The average follicular phase length turned out to be 16.9 days, with the overall menstrual cycle length dictating the former. Long cycles (31 to 35 days) implied an average follicular phase of 19.5 days, while short cycles meant an average follicular length of 12.4 days. Those who had extremely long cycles (36 to 50 days) showed an average of 26.8 days, while the ones with extremely short cycles (15 to 20 days) had an average of 10.4 days.

"It is important that women who wish to plan a pregnancy are having intercourse on their fertile days," said Professor Harper. She suggested considering “other measures such as basal body temperature” to identify the fertile period instead of solely relying on the menstrual cycle.

Dr. Simon Rowland, head of medical affairs at Natural Cycles, pointed out the connection between this result and the possible inaccuracy of fertility calendar apps. Meanwhile, Elina Berglund, co-founder of Natural Cycles app, focused on how every female body is unique. She said, “Reflecting the increasingly mainstream use of femtech, studies like this — powered by data — empower women to better understand their bodies by offering a more individualised approach to health. For me personally, the more entrenched I became in my own fertility data at the start of Natural Cycles, the more I learnt about my body — and the importance of this agency cannot be overstated.”

Chances are that similar studies will be conducted across the globe, considering the growing awareness on menstruation and pregnancy. Nonetheless, it has certainly made us question facts and take a second look at our menstrual health.

One thing that everyone got wrong about the Paleo diet

The Paleo diet, also known as the caveman diet, is one of the hottest diet trends around the globe today. This diet is based upon the idea of eating food items our bodies were originally designed for but changed through thousands of years of evolution. It is good for diabetes management, heart health, and immunity. A person on a Paleo diet is encouraged to have meat, seafood, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds and to avoid carbs to stay fit and healthy. But recently a study revealed that there is a huge difference between the original Paleo diet and the modern one, which is followed by all.

If you think that nuts and berries were the sources of carbs in the ancient times then you might be wrong. As per the article published , an international team of researchers pointed out there is a big discrepancy between ancient and modern Paleo diet. The statement was made after reviewing the anthropological, physiological, and genetic data, as per which our ancestors ate a lot of carbs.

As per researchers, cavemen needed a lot of glucose to meet the metabolic demands of their growing brains and for the growth of the baby in a mother's womb. They might have got a little bit of glucose from meat and fruits, but that would not have been enough for them. So, to meet their need for glucose, they ate starchy carbs like roots and tubers.

As per experts, protein can make only 40 percent of the total calorie intake, the rest has to be acquired from some other source. Consuming protein in excess can damage your kidneys. So, a human body anyway needs carbs to carry out their day to day work. That simply means that our ancestors had carbs for energy and carry out their day-to-day function.

This evidence is enough for you to include some carbs in your paleo diet. By having some carbs while following the Paleo diet will make you feel more energetic.

AI helps identify new breast cancer types

Using artificial intelligence (AI), researchers have distinguished five types of breast cancer, which were earlier lumped into one. Researchers applied AI and machine learning (ML) to gene sequences and molecular data from breast tumours, to reveal crucial differences among these cancer types.

According to researchers, two of them are more likely to respond to immunotherapy, one was more likely to relapse on tamoxifen. “We are at the cusp of a revolution in healthcare as we get to grips with the possibilities AI and ML can open up,” said study leader author .

“Our study has shown that AI can recognise patterns in breast cancer that are beyond the limit of the human eye, and to point us to new avenues of treatment among those who have stopped responding to standard hormone therapies,” the researcher said.

The majority of breast cancers develop in the inner cells that line the mammary ducts and are “fed” by oestrogen or progesterone. These are classed as ‘luminal A’ tumours and often have the best cure rates.

However, patients within the group respond differently to standard treatments, like tamoxifen, or new treatments — needed if patients relapse — such as immunotherapy.

The researchers applied the AI-trained computer software to a vast array of data available on the genetics, molecular and cellular make-up of primary ‘luminal A’ breast tumours, along with data on patient survival.

Once trained, the AI was able to identify five different types of disease with particular patterns of response to treatment.

Women with a cancer type labelled ‘inflammatory’ had immune cells present in their tumours and high levels of a protein called PD-L1, suggesting they were likely to respond to immunotherapies.

Another group of patients had ‘triple negative’ tumours, which don’t respond to standard hormone treatments but various indicators suggest they might also respond to immunotherapy.

Patients with tumours that contained a specific change in chromosome 8 had worse survival than other groups when treated with tamoxifen and tended to relapse much earlier. These patients may benefit from an additional or new treatment to delay or prevent late relapse.

The markers identified in the study don’t challenge the overall classification of breast cancer, but find additional differences within the current sub-divisions of the disease, with important implications for treatment.
