CBD, short for cannabidiol.
Now not only do we know that CBD works as an antipsychotic, we know it targets the areas of the brain that need to be targeted. This really gives us confidence, and it gives us scientific justification for large scale clinical trials," lead researcher on the study Sagnik Bhattacharyya tells Inverse

Scientists compared brain scan results of people with a diagnosis of psychosis and people without the disorder as they were doing a memory exercise. In the people with psychosis, the researchers found clear differences in the activity patterns in their prefrontal, mediotemporal, and striatal areas of the brain — those that regulate decision making, learning and memory. But when these participants were given a single dose of CBD, their brain activity patterns were more similar to those of people without the disorder.

The results provide insight into which part of the brain is affected by CBD and suggest CBD may curb symptoms of psychosis in the human brain.

The study was published Wednesday in Psychological Medicine.

Preliminary Findings Show CBD Could Help Fight Superbugs

The worrying ascent of superbugs that are immune to commonly used antibiotics is seeing researchers look for new solutions, especially in antibiotics research.

A new study has shown that CBD, or cannabidiol, extracted from cannabis plants is a "remarkably effective" candidate, at least in test conditions.

Preliminary results

These are very early findings and a lot more research is needed, so people should absolutely not self-medicate, the researchers say.

However, the study, did show that CBD has antibiotic effects against several Gram-positive bacteria, including types of staph and strep bacteria. Some of these strains had shows resistance to other antibiotic drugs.

"It needs a lot more work to show [that CBD] would be useful to treat infections in humans," said study lead author.

"It would be very dangerous to try to treat a serious infection with cannabidiol instead of one of the tried and tested antibiotics," he told.

A word of caution

A senior scholar did tell  that caution is needed in these studies. Especially as people might read preliminary results as conclusive evidence that CBD is an effective antibiotic.

Just because [CBD] has antibiotic activity in an in vitro assay doesn't mean it does in the human body," she said. "Lots of different compounds … have [antibiotic] activity in a petri dish."
The promise is there, but more tests and research are needed.

Another medical use for pot: Healing broken bones

There’s yet another use for marijuana: It may help to heal broken bones, according to a new study.
Researchers found that cannabidiol – an element of marijuana that does not get people high – improved the healing process in rats with broken leg bones after eight weeks, according to a study published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research by Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University.

Yankel Gabet of Tel Aviv’s Bone Research Laboratory who led the study, said it found that the element “makes bones stronger during healing,” which could prevent future fractures. This process occurs as cannabidiol, or CBD, enhances the maturation of collagen, the protein in connective tissue that “holds the body together.”

“After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future,” Gabet said in a news release.

The results of the study provide another glimpse into the potential health benefits of marijuana. Medicinal marijuana is already used to reduce some of the effects associated with chemotherapy in cancer patients. It is also used as treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.

In earlier research, Gabet’s team learned that the body’s cannabinoid receptors “stimulated bone formation and inhibited bone loss.” Those findings open doors to how marijuana could treat osteoporosis and other bone-related diseases, the researchers say.

Marijuana is still largely illegal across the world and in the United States. But marijuana prescribed for medical uses is legal in 23 states and the District of Columbia.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration classifies marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug “with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse” alongside heroin and LSD. Although that classification is unlikely to change this year, attempts and events that challenge marijuana’s status in the nation have not gone unnoticed.

According to Gabet, “there is still a lot of work to be done to develop appropriate therapies” in using marijuana medically, but “it is possible to detach a clinical therapy objective” from the mood-changing aspects of the stoner’s plant.

“The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point.”
