5 common myths about teeth-whitening busted

A sparkling white smile not only helps to enhance confidence and self-esteem but also improves one’s appearance dramatically. As a result, teeth-whitening treatments are among the most popular aesthetic dental procedures, in demand today. However, there still exists a plethora of myths and misconceptions about teeth-whitening, which can play a role in causing severe, often irreparable damage, to one’s teeth, not to mention wastage of money. To separate fact from fiction, the following are the 5 most common myths regarding teeth whitening!
1. Myth: Over-the-counter teeth-whitening products are as effective as treatments at a dental officeA number of scientific studies have found that sodium chlorite, an active ingredient in most over-the-counter teeth-whitening products, could significantly reduce the hardness of teeth in the presence of an acid, and make them susceptible to surface abrasions in the future. While hydrogen peroxide is the standard chemical used in dental practices, the obscurity regarding the chemical composition of most over-the-counter and online products, make them extremely risky. Several of these products have, in fact, contain dangerous chemicals, including toxic or banned substances, which can severely burn gums, or irreparably damage the teeth. On the other hand, a certified dentist is trained specifically to take into account potential or existing health problems and side effects, including gum disease, and the impact that a teeth-whitening procedure can have, to select a product that is as effective as it is safe.

2. Myth: You can never drink coffee or wine again after a teeth-whitening procedureWhile patients are always advised to avoid foods and beverages that cause staining, such as red wine and coffee, it is not permanent at all! Dentists recommend avoiding them only for the first few days following the treatment, as the pores in one’s teeth remain open during the period, with the chemical reaction taking place for the next few days.

3. Myth: In-office teeth whitening takes a long time (1-2 Hours)When it comes to teeth whitening, the time needed for the procedure depends on the process being used. In fact, procedures like the Biolase eZlase teeth whitening system and Diode Laser-activated Bleaching system allow one to have a healthy, white smile, in a matter of just 20 minutes!

4. Myth: Teeth-whitening is guaranteed to give you the whitest teeth
The effectiveness of a teeth-whitening procedure actually varies from patient to patient, depending on the type of stains, the thickness of the enamel, the tooth structure, and the age of the patient. Hence, in order to have clarity regarding the expected results, one should always consult a dentist first, to have realistic expectations and choose the most appropriate procedure.

5. Myth: Teeth-whitening makes teeth weak and sensitive
The truth is that like any medical procedure, teeth-whitening is also accompanied by a number of potential risks, including sensitivity, gum irritation, or even nerve damage. However, having the procedure carried out by a licensed professional dental health provider can help avoid or minimize those risks significantly. In addition, studies have also shown that the latest teeth-whitening technology, such as whitening gels activated by diode lasers; shows little to no surface alterations, damage, or sensitivity, in comparison to most conventional whitening products.

Teeth-whitening continues to be one of the easiest, quickest, and simplest ways of enhancing one’s smile. However, in order to ensure the most effective and least harmful results, it is always best to consult one’s dentist, to understand the potential side-effects, if any, and decide upon the procedure that is most suitable for the individual.

Myth about chopped onions causing food poisoning busted

A claim has been afloat on social media for several days now. It says, that leaving chopped up onions overnight can make them toxic, which in turn, can lead to food poisoning. It seems to be doing the internet rounds since 2016. So, is it ideal to immediately cook the onions after you cut them? Read on to find out:

Nutritionist  said, “Yes onions should be cut fresh and cooked right away. However, they don’t turn toxic as their acidic pH inhibits microbes and bacterial growth.” She warned that keeping cut onions outside refrigerator can kill their freshness, and it’s not a good idea to consume them the next day.

The claim has swelled on the internet, with the National Onion Association in the US releasing a statement to quell it. They mention, “When cut, onions release compounds that do not promote pathogen growth.” In simple terms, cut onions don’t necessarily lead to disease formations. “When handled properly, cut onions can be stored in the refrigerator in a sealed container for up to 7 days,” it read.

Always go for fresh ingredients
Nonetheless, going for fresh ingredients is always a better option. Expert states, “Juice released from cut onion is known to kill or inhibit the growth of several types of microorganisms, including some of those capable of causing food poisoning in humans.”

Myth busting site explained in 2009 that leaving cut onion for a few days doesn’t let the onions get contaminated and don’t cause food poisoning, thereby busting the myth. But, it’s ideal to use a fresh knife when you’re cutting or chopping anything, and make sure everything has been washed thoroughly.  “It is a safe and hygienic practice to use freshly cut vegetables- and the same applies to onions too,” the nutritionist said.

The nutritionist added, “Ideally even leftover salad should not be stored but eaten immediately.” For cooking too, make use of fresh ingredients, to extract the maximum health benefits.

Cutting an onion and keeping it near you in a small container for 5 days at the very first sign of cold or fever, will protect you from suffering from them. As, onion takes the bacteria present around and it turns black or dark brown if there are more bacteria around you. I've tried it and it has worked.

Myth stating menstrual cycle lasts for 28 days busted

Remember how you learnt about the 28-day menstrual cycle in school? If you’ve been privileged to have period lessons at all, that is. Also recall how anything out of the 28-day time-frame was considered to be abnormal? Well, a new study suggests that all of this isn’t a common occurrence.

Natural Cycles, a contraceptive app joined hands with London's UCL to conduct a study on 600,000 cycles of about 125,000 women from Sweden, the US, and the UK. The research revealed that only 13 per cent of menstrual cycles were based on the 28-day framework. For about 65 per cent of participants, the cycles lasted between 25 to 30 days.

Professor Joyce Harper from the UCL Institute for Women's Health opined that the world’s understanding of menstrual cycles could be flawed. "Our study is unique in analysing over half a million cycles and rewriting our understanding of the key stages," she explained. "Traditionally, studies have concentrated on women who have approximately 28-day cycles. For the first time, our study shows that few women have the textbook 28-day cycle, with some experiencing very short or very long cycles."

The study also focused on the concept of fertility. Most of the people think that ovulation occurs on the 14th day of the menstrual cycle. However, this might not be completely true. The study discovered many differences in follicular phase length (the time from the first day of menstruation to ovulation).

The average follicular phase length turned out to be 16.9 days, with the overall menstrual cycle length dictating the former. Long cycles (31 to 35 days) implied an average follicular phase of 19.5 days, while short cycles meant an average follicular length of 12.4 days. Those who had extremely long cycles (36 to 50 days) showed an average of 26.8 days, while the ones with extremely short cycles (15 to 20 days) had an average of 10.4 days.

"It is important that women who wish to plan a pregnancy are having intercourse on their fertile days," said Professor Harper. She suggested considering “other measures such as basal body temperature” to identify the fertile period instead of solely relying on the menstrual cycle.

Dr. Simon Rowland, head of medical affairs at Natural Cycles, pointed out the connection between this result and the possible inaccuracy of fertility calendar apps. Meanwhile, Elina Berglund, co-founder of Natural Cycles app, focused on how every female body is unique. She said, “Reflecting the increasingly mainstream use of femtech, studies like this — powered by data — empower women to better understand their bodies by offering a more individualised approach to health. For me personally, the more entrenched I became in my own fertility data at the start of Natural Cycles, the more I learnt about my body — and the importance of this agency cannot be overstated.”

Chances are that similar studies will be conducted across the globe, considering the growing awareness on menstruation and pregnancy. Nonetheless, it has certainly made us question facts and take a second look at our menstrual health.
