Sleeping in your contact lenses -You may lose your eyesight

Sleeping in your contact lenses -You may lose your eyesight is the stern message which emerges of 6 tales on eye infections featured .

Contace lens are worn by an estimated 45 million Americans. Improper care or wear, like going to sleep without removing your lenses, can lead to infections of the cornea like microbial keratitis, which can lead to serious health problems. The experts report that an estimated 1 million annual outpatient and emergency visits were due to keratitis.

Sleeping in your contact lenses is risky and can lead to infections, or in some cases, permanent damage, said a Dr. Falling asleep, or even napping without removing your contact lenses can significantly increase the likelihood of serious health problems.

In one case, a man evaluated for eye redness and blurred vision reported sleeping in contact lenses 3-4 nights per week and swimming with them. He was treated for bacterial and fungal microbial keratitis.

Another instance outlines an adolescent girl who slept in lenses purchased without prescription at a chain drug store. She developed a corneal ulcer that resulted in scarring.

A man who wore the same lenses for 2 weeks was diagnosed with a perforated cornea, bacterial infection and ultimately required a transplant to save his right eye.

To prevent eye infections, the experts recommend the following-
1) wash hands before touching contact lenses.
2) Remove contact lenses before bed, shower or swimming.
3) Rub and rinse contact lenses with disinfecting solution every time they are removed.
4) Replace old contact lens solution with fresh solutions every time you store your contact lenses in a case.
5) Clean contact lens case after each use.
6) Replace contact lens cases at least once every 3 months.

Sleeping in lenses is one of the riskiest and most commonly reported behaviours for adolescent and risky behaviour for adult contact lens wearers, said a Dr. If you want to avoid infection and avoid a trip to the emergency department, proper care is a must.

Sudden weakness of one side of face, difficulty in closing one eyelid could be Bell’s Palsy

Bell's Palsy is a type of facial paralysis that results in an inability to control the facial muscles on the affected side.

Sudden weakness of one side of face, difficulty in closing one of the eyelids can be Bell's Palsy, a type of facial paralysis that results in an inability to control the facial muscles on the affected side, said doctors. According to them, 80 per cent of patients recover within 6 months, if treated properly and on time. ‘Proper care of eye during this period is of utmost importance to prevent permanent consequences such as corneal ulceration and scarring leading to loss of vision,’ said Anurag Wahi, ophthalmologist at Sharp Sight Group of Eye Hospital. Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes temporary weakness or paralysis of the muscles in one side of the face, and is most common cause of facial paralysis.

Noting there are several symptoms that people ignore but later discover to be Bell’s Palsy, Wahi said that these can also include irritation in the eyes due to dryness or drooping of part of the face. ‘Difficulty in facial expression, alteration in sense of taste and pain in front or behind the ear in some cases are also symptoms that gives indications that it might be Bell’s Palsy,’ said ophthalmologist Samir Sud. ‘The most common effect of Bell’s palsy on eye is that the patient is unable to blink on the affected side and close the eyelids completely. Sometimes lower eyelid may turn outwards,’ he said.
