Type 2 Diabetes: Here’s how this nut can help lower your blood sugar levels

As a life-long condition, diabetes can be managed by a controlled and healthy diet along with maintaining physical and mental fitness. Nuts, which are good source of nutrition, provide a range of health benefits for all. In fact, they are also considered beneficial for people with diabetes. By controlling blood sugar levels, diabetics can manage their condition well. And nuts help you do that as per the researchers.

A study published  noted that by eating five servings of nuts per week, patients with type 2 diabetes had a 17 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease. As per the study, people with type 2 diabetes who consumed nuts regularly had a 34 per cent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, a 20 per cent lower risk of coronary heart disease, and a 31 per cent reduced risk of premature death.

Can cashew nuts help?

Unlike popular belief, cashews contain less amount of fat as compared to other nuts. As per a 2018-study published, cashew nut consumption increased HDL Cholesterol and reduced systolic blood pressure in Asian Indians with type 2 diabetes. As per the 12-Week randomized controlled trial where the researchers gave 300 participants with type 2 diabetes either a cashew-enriched diet or a typical diabetes diet, it was noted how the nut didn’t show any “deleterious effects on body weight, glycemia, or other lipid variable”.

Common tree nuts including almonds, cashews, walnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pistachios, pine nuts and chestnuts are known to improve heart health.

Cashews are lower in fat as compared to other nuts. Over 75 per cent of the fat in cashews is oleic acid, which is also known to be a heart-healthy mono-unsaturated fat. Being mindful of allergies, experts suggest taking about a handful of nuts every day to enjoy a healthful life.

Researchers develop robotic thread that may slip through brain's blood vessels

Researchers have developed a magnetically steerable, thread-like robot that may actively glide through narrow, winding pathways like the brain's tiny blood vessels. The study, revealed that the magnetically controlled device could one day deliver clot-reducing therapies in response to strokes or other brain blockages.

If acute stroke can be treated within the 1st 90 minutes or so, patients' survival rates could increase significantly, the researcher said.

If we could design a device to reverse blood vessel blockage within this ' golden hour', we could potentially avoid permanent brain damage. That's our hope. To clear blood clots in the brain, surgeons currently need to insert a thin wire through a patient's main artery, usually in the leg or groin, and manually rotate the wire up into the damaged brain vessel, guided  by a fluroscope that images the blood vessels using x-rays.

However, the procedure is physically taxing, requiring surgeons who must be specifically trained in the task, to endure repeated radiation exposure.

The researchers created a robotic thread core made from bendy, springy nickel-titanium alloy, and they coated the wire core in a rubbery paste filled with magnetic particles.

They then bonded the magnetic covering with a kind of hydrogel that gives the thread a slippery, friction-free surface, but does not affect the responsiveness or the magnetic particles, according to the study.

The researchers tested the thread in a life-size silicone replica of the brain's major blood vessels modeled after scanning an actual patient's brain. Those silicone vessels also have clots and abnormal sacs.

They filled the vessels with a liquid simulating the viscosity of blood, then successfully manipulated a large magnet around the model to steer the robot through the vessels' winding, narrow paths.

The team demonstrated that the thread's wire core can also be replaced with an optical fibre that can activate the laser once the robot reached a target region to clear blockages.

They are preparing to test the robotic thread in vivo, according to the researchers.

Diabettics Eat Cucumberr To Manage Weight And Keep Blood Sugar Levels Controlled

When you are planning a diet for diabetic people – for your own self or for a family member, there are certain specific things you need to keep in mind. There are certain strict dos and don'ts of a diabetic diet and they should be strictly adhered to ensure that the blood sugar levels are not messed with. Raw vegetables can be added to meals to ensure weight loss and controlled blood sugar.
A spike in blood sugar can be very dangerous for a diabetic person and may also be fatal. It is important to keep a strict check on what they eat. Cucumbers – known for their cooling properties, the presence of water in them and for great effects for the skin should be included in your diet for diabetes to keep blood sugar under control.

How does cucumber help in sugar control?

A study said that type 2 diabetes patients could use cucumbers to lower their blood sugar levels and maintain them at the optimum level. Cucumbers are high in fibre – which helps in lowering down the rate of carbohydrate breakdown in the body and control blood sugar. They are also low in calories and help in weight loss and weight management.

How can you add cucumber to your diet?

Cucumbers are a versatile vegetable and can be eaten in various ways. You can eat it raw in salads or just snack on it while working or watching a movie. You can add it to sandwiches and burgers. Another great way to consume cucumber is in curd, which also help in keeping diabetes under control. In winters, you can also make cucumber soup to enjoy a cold evening snuggled up in a blanket with warm soup.

Yoga can benefit breast cancer patients by regulating stress hormones

Yoga – the 5,000-year-old Indian meditative practice – can benefit women who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer, as it regulates stress and fights fatigue, a new study has found.

For women with breast cancer undergoing radiation therapy, yoga offers unique benefits beyond fighting fatigue, researchers said.
The study by Lorenzo Cohen, from University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center is part of an effort to scientifically validate mind-body interventions in cancer patients.

Researchers found that while simple stretching exercises counteracted fatigue, patients who participated in yoga exercises that incorporated controlled breathing, meditation and relaxation techniques into their treatment plan experienced improved ability to engage in their daily activities, better general health and better regulation of cortisol (stress hormone).

Women in the yoga group were also better equipped to find meaning in the illness experience, which declined over time for the women in the other two groups.

The study also assessed, for the first time, yoga benefits in cancer patients by comparing their experience with patients in an active control group who integrated simple, generic stretching exercises into their lives.

“Combining mind and body practices that are part of yoga clearly have tremendous potential to help patients manage the psychosocial and physical difficulties associated with treatment and life after cancer, beyond the benefits of simple stretching,” said Cohen.

Participants in the yoga and stretching groups attended sessions specifically tailored to breast cancer patients for one-hour, three days a week throughout their six weeks of radiation treatment.
They were asked to report on their quality of life, including levels of fatigue and depression, their daily functioning and a measure assessing ability to find meaning in the illness experience.

Saliva samples were collected and electrocardiogram tests were administered.
