Why you should add sesame seeds to your diet

Sesame seeds are an integral part of cuisines across many cultures. They’re incredibly versatile, and when incorporated into a balanced diet, these tiny seeds contribute to a wide variety of health benefits.

Sesame seeds are rich in vitamins, minerals and healthy fats, and consuming them can help support heart health, gut health and boost your immune system. Sesame seeds (and foods containing sesame) can be enjoyed by most people. However, there are a few exceptions. If you have an allergy, for example, you should avoid eating them. In conversation with a dietitian, we break down everything you need to know.

Are sesame seeds good for you?

Absolutely. Sesame seeds fall under the category of nuts and seeds, which “are a great source of healthy fats and fiber,” says a registered dietitian. “They’re recommended in an overall, well-rounded, balanced diet,” she says.

Sesame seeds are rich in unsaturated fats, Dieb says. Dietary patterns that incorporate foods abundant in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats can help decrease bad cholesterol levels, per the American Heart Association. Accordingly, consuming foods that contain these types of fats can have immense benefits for heart health and improving cognitive function, Dieb explains.

Sesame seeds are also an important source of vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin E, calcium and iron. These essential nutrients support bone health, heart health and immunity, notes a dietitian.

Because nuts and seeds are calorically dense, Dieb recommends consuming at most one to two tablespoons of sesame seeds a day. Ultimately, “it's more about having a well-rounded diet and learning to incorporate all different kinds of plants into your routine,” she says.

Try sprinkling them on a breakfast toast, making a granola with sesame or adding them to salads, Dieb suggests.

Are sesame seeds good for gut health?

When it comes to gut health, eating enough fiber is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system. Eating foods rich in fiber not only cleanses your digestive tract of unwanted buildup, but it can also lower your risk of developing colon cancer, according to the CDC.

Dieb explains that while sesame seeds “aren’t the heaviest in fiber,” adding them into the mix of a balanced diet can still “be a great option for your overall gut health.”

Three tablespoons (30 grams) of sesame seeds contains 3.5 grams of fiber, according to Healthline. Depending on your age and sex, the daily recommended intake of fiber ranges from 22 to 34 grams, per the CDC.

Sesame is considered the “ninth” major food allergen, per the FDA. In 2023, the FASTER Act was signed into federal law, requiring all packaged foods and dietary supplements to label sesame as an allergen. If you have a known allergy to sesame, you should always read food packaging labels to identify if it is present.

It's rumored that people who suffer from diverticulitis, an inflammatory condition of the large intestine, should not eat nuts and seeds. However, there is insufficient evidence to support this claim, per Mayo Clinic. People with diverticulitis may consume sesame seeds, but “always consult your health care practitioner” first, she says.

Sesame seeds are also high in oxalates, which can exacerbate calcium oxalate stones (kidney stones), per the National Kidney Foundation. For this reason, people with a history of kidney stones should avoid consuming sesame seeds, she recommends.

Top 10 Ways Oranges Keep You Healthy

Oranges! They’re delicious, juicy and packed full of vitamins (A/B/C) & nutrients (Magnesium, Phosphorous, Potassium, Calcium & more) as well as antioxidants & anti-inflammatory nutrients. You’ll be amazed to know that drinking a glass of its juice is more effective than taking a vitamin C supplement!
Here are 10 reasons why this miracle citrus fruit is so good for you:
1. Boost your immune system
Like most citrus fruits, the Orange is packed full of vitamin C, which is much needed to keep your immune system running efficiently and boost the production of white blood cells, plus vitamin A, copper and folate – all essential for the immune system.
2. Lower your cholesterol
Research shows that the flavanones in orange juice lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and improve the good-to-bad cholesterol ratio. Oranges also contain Pectin, a soluble fiber that locks up bad cholesterol and expels it from the body.
3. Fight aging
Rich in antioxidants, oranges have a reputation as anti-aging  fruit, as well as the fact that they contain beta-carotene which helps in repairing skin-damage.
4. Keep your eyes healthy
Beta-carotene also is turned into vitamin A by the body and vitamin A is known to be vital to the function of our eyes. Along with it, the Orange contains carotenoids that help prevent chronic eye diseases.
5. Rejuvenate your skin
The antioxidant properties of vitamin C helps fight sun-damage as well as environmental pollutants that can damage the skin. It also is a key ingredient in the production of collagen, which helps keep the skin tight and elastic. The citric acid in the peel lightens and brightens the skin and also opens up clogged pores, so making a face mask from it is a good idea.
6. Cancer Prevention
oranges, healthy
We mentioned antioxidants already, but did you know they also help fight free radicals which are a leading cause of  cancer? Not only that, but research shows that regularly giving orange-juice to children in the first 2 years of their life will reduce the possibility of developing Leukemia.
7. Helps you lose weight
Need a helping hand in losing weight? Eat more oranges. Rich in fiber – oranges keep you feeling full for longer, and thanks to the vitamin C the body can burn fat faster!
8. Healthier heart
Being rich in antioxidants, folate and potassium, oranges are great for heart health. The antioxidants, particularly vitamin C, present in oranges protect the arteries from free radicals and prevent the oxidation of cholesterol. Also, oranges have phytochemicals that prevent platelets from sticking together and strengthen blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells. Folate, or vitamin B9, processes the amino acid homocysteine in the body.

High levels of homocysteine may cause a heart attack, irrespective of a person’s cholesterol levels. Potassium is another crucial nutrient for heart health as it plays a key role in heart functions and muscle contractions. Plus, research has found that the flavanone hesperidin present in the fruit and its juice contributes to vascular protective effects.
9. Helps prevent arthritis
According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, drinking one glass of freshly squeezed orange juice daily can assist in reducing the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis. Vitamin C, Phytonutrients Zeaxanthin and Beta-Cryptoxanthin protect against oxidative damage that can result in inflammation.
10. Prevents you from getting Kidney stones
Finally, vitamin C also helps increase the amount of citrate in your urine, which in turn reduces your likeliness of getting Calcium Oxalate kidney stones by reducing the crystallization of Uric Acid & Calcium Oxalate.

Don’t overdo it though, oranges are rich in sugar and acids, and can lead to tooth-decay and might upset your stomach if consumed in large quantities.

Kidney stones partially dissolve naturally

Scientists have found that kidney stones partially dissolve and regrow again as they form, challenging previously held theories as well as raising hopes for new treatment.

The findings showed that kidney stones are built up in calcium-rich layers that resemble other mineralisations in nature, such as those forming coral reefs.

This contradicts the widely held notion that kidney stones are homogenous rocks that never dissolve and are different from all other rocks in nature, said lead author of the study.

"Contrary to what doctors learn in their medical training, we found that kidney stones undergo a dynamic process of growing and dissolving.

"This means that one day we may be able to intervene to fully dissolve the stones right in the patient's kidney, something most doctors today would say is impossible," the rsearcher said.

The research, published in the journal , demonstrated that "instead of being worthless crystalline lumps, kidney stones are a minute-by-minute record of the health and functioning of a person's kidney".

"Before this study, it was thought that a kidney stone is just a simple crystal that gets bigger over time," said a Dr.

"What we're seeing here is that it's dynamic. The stone is growing and dissolving. It's very rich with many components. It's very much alive," the Dr. added.

For the study, the team used a novel technology -- Airyscan super-resolution microscopy -- that allowed them to view the samples at 140-nanometer resolution --spectacularly clear, colourful images of the interior growth history of the kidney stones.

They found that kidney stones are built up in alternating thin layers of organic matter and crystals, interrupted in places with jutting interior crystals.

In the earliest stages of kidney stone development, crystals of a hydrated form of calcium oxalate adhere to one another, forming a big, irregular clump. Layers of organic matter and crystals build up on top of this inner core, creating an outer shell. The stones continue to dissolve and grow.

But many of the layers were disrupted, revealing that part of the stones - usually the interior dihydrate crystals - had dissolved. New crystals of a dehydrated form of calcium oxalate had begun to grow again within those voids.

Researchers and doctors who study and treat kidney disease will now need to rethink their basic assumptions, the study noted.

Kidney Stones May Be Prevented By Citrus Extract

Researchers have found evidence that a natural citrus fruit extract can inhibit the growth of painful kidney stones and even dissolve the crystals.

The compound hydroxycitrate (HCA) can dissolve calcium oxalate crystals, the most common component of human kidney stones, said the study that prepares the groundwork to design an effective drug for the painful condition. "HCA shows promise as a potential therapy to prevent kidney stones," the researchers wrote in the study published onlne in the journal Nature.

The findings are the result of a combination of experimental studies, computational studies and human studies, said lead author of the study Jeffrey Rimer, Associate Professor of at the University of Houston in the US.

Kidney stones are small, hard mineral deposits that form inside the kidneys. High blood pressure, diabetes and obesity can increase the risk, and the reported incidence is on the rise. Preventive treatment has not changed much over the last three decades. Doctors tell patients who are at risk of developing stones to drink lots of water and avoid foods rich in oxalate, such as rhubarb, okra, spinach and almonds. They often recommend taking citrate (CA), in the form of potassium citrate, a supplement that can slow crystal growth, but some people are unable to tolerate the side effects. "HCA may be preferred  as a therapy over CA ( potassium citrate), " the researchers said.

HCA is chemically similar to CA and is also available as a dietary supplement.
The head-to-head studies of CA and HCA determined that while both compounds inhibit the growth of calcium oxalate crystals, HCA was more potent and displayed unique qualities that are advantageous for the development of new therapies. HCA was also tested in human participants, as seven people took the supplement for three days, allowing researchers to determine that HCA is excreted through urine, a requirement for the supplement to work as a treatment. While Rimer said the research established the groundwork to design an effective drug, questions remain.

Long-term safety, dosage and additional human trials are needed, he said.

Summer is high risk time for kidney stones. The incidence of kidney stone cases goes up by as much as 40% during hotter months, due to rise in temperature.

Statistically, approximately 5 -7 million patients suffer from stone disease in India and at least 1/1000 of Indian population needs hospitalization due to kidney stone disease, shares Dr. Pradeep Rao, Head, Department of Urology, Global Hospitals, Mumbai.

Kidney stones are basically hard crystals that form inside your kidneys and are made up of minerals and acidic salt. If they become large enough, they are difficult to pass and can cause extreme pain. If you have experienced this ailment in the past, it is important to understand how to prevent kidney stones from recurring.

Commenting on the same, Dr Rao says, "People who work in a hot environment or have a work routine that does not allow them to drink enough water, are prone to developing stones. During summers, you lose more water through sweating, but fail to consume enough water to make up for the lost content. The water loss eventually leads to higher urine concentrations, which in turn increases the risk of kidney stone formation."

In order to keep kidney stones at bay, doctors suggest:

-Make sure your body stays hydrated throughout the day and water is your best ally here. Adequate amount of water (10-12 glasses- 3 liters without any sugar, sodium or any other ingredient) will help flush out substances that can form kidney stones.

-Avoid black tea and black coffee as caffeine causes dehydration.

-Drink lemon water during summers as it reduces the risk of kidney stones considerably.

-Limit products that have oxalate as they form calcium oxalate kidney stones. Oxalate is found in many foods such as chocolate, black tea, soy cheese, sesame seeds, wheat bran, figs, blueberries, beans, leaks, to name a few.

-Lead an active lifestyle. Make sure you eat clean and exercise daily.

-There are some dietary restrictions that stone formers should follow. They are people who have had kidney stones in the past. "For stone formers, milk and milk products consumption should not exceed more than 250 ml per day. They should also avoid red meat and fish along with vegetables like spinach, tomatoes and pulses (urad dal). Dry fruits should also be avoided except almonds," informs Dr Pawan Kesarwani, Urologist, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Patparganj, New Delhi.

-There are some medicines that can help you in controlling the recurrence of kidney stones. But they should be taken under medical supervision.
