Summer is high risk time for kidney stones. The incidence of kidney stone cases goes up by as much as 40% during hotter months, due to rise in temperature.
Statistically, approximately 5 -7 million patients suffer from stone disease in India and at least 1/1000 of Indian population needs hospitalization due to kidney stone disease, shares Dr. Pradeep Rao, Head, Department of Urology, Global Hospitals, Mumbai.
Kidney stones are basically hard crystals that form inside your kidneys and are made up of minerals and acidic salt. If they become large enough, they are difficult to pass and can cause extreme pain. If you have experienced this ailment in the past, it is important to understand how to prevent kidney stones from recurring.
Commenting on the same, Dr Rao says, "People who work in a hot environment or have a work routine that does not allow them to drink enough water, are prone to developing stones. During summers, you lose more water through sweating, but fail to consume enough water to make up for the lost content. The water loss eventually leads to higher urine concentrations, which in turn increases the risk of kidney stone formation."
In order to keep kidney stones at bay, doctors suggest:
-Make sure your body stays hydrated throughout the day and water is your best ally here. Adequate amount of water (10-12 glasses- 3 liters without any sugar, sodium or any other ingredient) will help flush out substances that can form kidney stones.
-Avoid black tea and black coffee as caffeine causes dehydration.
-Drink lemon water during summers as it reduces the risk of kidney stones considerably.
-Limit products that have oxalate as they form calcium oxalate kidney stones. Oxalate is found in many foods such as chocolate, black tea, soy cheese, sesame seeds, wheat bran, figs, blueberries, beans, leaks, to name a few.
-Lead an active lifestyle. Make sure you eat clean and exercise daily.
-There are some dietary restrictions that stone formers should follow. They are people who have had kidney stones in the past. "For stone formers, milk and milk products consumption should not exceed more than 250 ml per day. They should also avoid red meat and fish along with vegetables like spinach, tomatoes and pulses (urad dal). Dry fruits should also be avoided except almonds," informs Dr Pawan Kesarwani, Urologist, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Patparganj, New Delhi.
-There are some medicines that can help you in controlling the recurrence of kidney stones. But they should be taken under medical supervision.
