The 10 Most Useful Things You Can Do With Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is actually a natural mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate.
1. Bath
According to the National Academy of Sciences, most Americans are deficient in magnesium, a mineral that helps support many vital bodily functions. If left unchecked, a magnesium deficiency can lead to serious health issues down the road. So how can we get more magnesium? It’s Epsom salt to the rescue!

Doctors say that soaking in an Epsom salt bath is a safe, easy way to increase the body’s levels of both magnesium and sulfate, because these minerals are both readily absorbed through the skin. (So if anyone gives you a hard time about your long, luxurious soaks in the tub, you can tell them it’s good for your health!)

To do an Epsom salt soak, add 2 cups of Epsom salt to warm water in a standard-sized bathtub (double the amount of Epsom salt for oversized tubs.) Aim to soak for at least 12 minutes, and DO NOT USE SOAP. Soap will interfere with the action of the salts. Rest for about two hours afterwards, or better yet, take your bath just before bed! You’ll be sure to sleep like a baby!

2. Foot Soak

If you don’t have a bathtub, or just aren’t all that fond of soaking in a tub, try a foot soak instead! Add 1/2 cup of Epsom salt to a basin of warm water, and soak your feet for 20 minutes.

Your body will absorb the magnesium and sulfate through your feet, so you’ll still get the benefits of a full-body soak (but maybe not the relaxation of a good bath!)

3. Ease Constipation
Epsom salt is a natural laxative that can be used to relieve constipation. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of Epsom salt in a glass of water and drink. It will taste extremely bitter, but it works!

4. Hair Volume
A simple Epsom salt treatment will leave your hair feeling soft and full of body! Add equal parts of a deep conditioner and Epsom salt to a saucepan and stir to combine. Place the pan on your stovetop over low heat, just until the mixture is warmed through. Work the conditioner and Epsom salt mixture through your hair, then rinse after 20 minutes.

5. Garden Fertilizer
Studies show that Epsom salt may help plants grow greener with higher yields and more blooms. Magnesium helps seeds to germinate, increasing chlorophyll production and improving phosphorus and nitrogen uptake.

6. Racoon Deterrent
A few tablespoons of Epsom salt spread around your garbage cans will help deter pesky raccoons, who don’t like the taste of the stuff.

7. Splinter Remover
Dissolve around 1 cup of Epsom salt in a tub of water, and soak the area where the splinter is located. The soak will help to draw out the splinter, making it easier to remove with a pair of tweezers.

8. Slug Deterrent
Sprinkle Epsom salt where you see slug activity and say good-bye to the slugs.

9. Soothe Insect Bites
Use Epsom salt to reduce swelling and itching from insect bites. Make a compress by soaking a cotton washcloth in cold water that has been mixed with Epsom salt (two tablespoons per cup,) then apply to the skin.

10. Skin Exfoliation
Mix a handful of Epsom salt with enough olive oil or baby oil to create a paste. Gently rub it on your face for deep pore cleansing, or use it on heels, elbows and other rough areas. Rinse and pat dry.

Three things to do to break a fever and three things you shouldn’t

Has the sight of someone around you coughing and sneezing become common? If yes, know it’s officially the season of cold and flu. And the rise in body’s temperature can make one feel even more uncomfortable. But the good news is there is nothing to worry about it. Here we tell you four easy ways to reduce a fever associated with cold and flu and feel better fast. Drink a lot of fluids
This is the first thing that doctors tell us when we complain of cold and flu. This is because higher body temperature can lead to dehydration quickly. You can have warm water, juices, coconut water, teas and more. If you have flu, aim for at least 8 to 12 glasses in a day. Drinking more liquids also helps your body get rid of toxins.

Rest rest and restStaying active can actually raise your body temperature. Resting will help reduce the temperature and will help in faster recovery. Though medication is not always needed, you must consult a doctor if your body temperature is more than 102 F. Consult your doctor if your fever is accompanied with unbearable body ache, headache, stiff neck, shortness of breath, vomiting or any other unusual signs and symptoms.

Take a bathYou can ask someone to place a damp towel on your forehead and the back of your neck to lower your fever. You can also try taking a sponge bath with water to reduce the fever quickly. Do not try a cold bath without your doctor’s permission as that might lead to shivering, which might further increase your body temperature. Water should be of comfortable temperature as that will help you relax and will bring down your body's temperature.
What you shouldn’t do when you have a fever
Rubbing the body with alcoholThis is a very old technique to reduce fever, which is not at all safe. The technique is not only ineffective but can also lead to alcohol poisoning.
Take an ice bathAs we explained earlier that taking a bath might help in reducing the temperature but an ice-cold bath can lead to shivering of the body and rise in the body temperature.

Double up the medicationsDoubling up the medication or taking two different types at one time is not only ineffective but can be dangerous too. It won’t bring down your body temperature quickly and might even harm your body organs.
When to see the doctor for kids
Children between 0 to 3 months – If the temperature is 100.4 F or higher.
Children between 3 to 6 months –
If the temperature is above 102 F and they are sleepy or irritable.
Children between 6 to 24 months – If the temperature is above 102F and lasts for more than a day. If they have any other symptoms like rash, vomiting or diarrhoea, you can check with the doctor sooner.

7 Plastic-Free, Chemical-Free Essentials for Your Bath!

If you have ever read the ingredients on a shampoo bottle, you know how many chemicals have gone into making it. So skip those harsh cosmetics and go organic, your skin will thank you for it!
Do you read your shampoo bottle in the bathroom if you forget your phone in the bedroom? I am no different. Once the shampoo is done with blowing its own trumpet, promising to turn my fragile, frizzy hair into a glossy mane that will put lion’s to shame, I go to the list of ingredients. Chemicals, then more chemicals. Scary names that I can’t pronounce or begin to understand the efficacy if there is any!.

If a single shampoo has dozens of ingredients that are alien to us, the same must be the case with our soaps, body lotions and conditioners, right?

More and more people are giving up single-use plastic and chemicals and turning organic in the process. It’s a long journey to embark upon and why shouldn’t personal care be a priority?

So here it is. A list of 7 products that must be on your bathroom shelves. Kick out the chemicals from the cabinet and your lives.
Toothbrush and toothpaste

Switching to a chemical-free toothpaste and a bamboo toothbrush will help you keep your teeth and gums healthy without overburdening the planet with plastic. If you change your toothbrush once every three months, you throw away four brushes in a year. Now multiply that by the number of people in the country and the average lifespan in India. Save yourself from this debt to the environment and switch to eco-friendly alternatives.

And the same goes for tongue cleaners too.

Soap

It is a fact. Every time you take a bath, you are essentially rubbing a combination of chemicals on your body. Why would you do that, especially when you have organic options that can leave you clean and smelling awesome? Try it out. Organic soaps come in a wide variety–from jasmine to musk, from those with charcoal as main ingredient to those that have donkey milk. Give your favourite a go!

Are you more of a body wash person? We got your back there too! Just don’t forget to recycle or reuse those bottles to reduce your carbon footprint.

Coconut oil

Ahh, the joys of an oil champi! Haircare in Indian homes begins with a good ol’ head massage with coconut oil. The oil our parents and grandparents used was organic. And we are here to take you back to those traditions. Keep a bottle of chemical-free oil in your bathroom and see how the regular massages work wonders on your scalp!

Shampoo

Have we gotten so used to the smell and fragrance of our shampoos that we can’t see how many chemicals they contain? Let not your hair marinate in a chemical concoction and switch to eco-friendly options right now. Check out our range of shampoos and you will notice that organic shampoos come in just as many varieties as any. And if you choose shampoo bars over liquids, you won’t have to worry about plastic bottles either!

Conditioner

Champi, check, shampoo, check and now the obvious next step is to condition your hair. The next time your conditioner bottle is empty, try out an organic alternative instead and see how well it works on your hair.
Hair serum and hair gel

Setting your hair too much of a hassle? I feel you. Either my hair is too greasy, or it puffs up like a corn kernel. Shampooing and conditioning my hair is a hopeless business but a hair serum and gel usually do the trick. But this time, I chose organic and you should do it too!

Body Lotion

Soothing our skin with body lotion after a bath is a must. Pamper your skin with an organic body lotion after a day-long exposure to pollution. Whether right after a bath or before bed, a moisturising schedule is a must to keep your skin soft and hydrated.

Well, there you go! A chemical-free bath to refresh you every morning or night, take your pick! It won’t be long before you start noticing the difference – whether in terms of softer skin and hair or in the amount of trash you generate.
