How metabolism works and why you can't speed it up to lose weight

The part of your metabolism that burns calories throughout the day is called your basal metabolic rate (BMR).

There's little you can do to speed up your BMR to lose weight.

In order to lose weight, you must consume fewer calories than you burn each day through a combination of diet, exercise, and BMR processes that are mostly out of your control.

As you age, your metabolism will slow down but studies show that staying active can help.

Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions that break down the food we eat into energy and muscle.

Though many people think that they will lose weight if they speed up their metabolism, this isn't necessarily true. Here's what you need to know about the complicated relationship between metabolism and weight-loss.

Popular myths about metabolism and weight loss
When people refer to metabolism being "fast" or "slow" what they are really referring to is a measure of Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). BMR determines the number of passive calories that you burn — these are the calories that your body uses up while at rest.

A popular misconception is that adding muscle will help you metabolize calories faster — and while this is partially true, muscles at rest actually burn very few calories. Most of the metabolizing energy you expend is through your brain, heart, kidneys, and other organs that are constantly at work keeping you alive and healthy.

There is evidence that cardiovascular exercise can help boost your metabolism for a short period after you work out, but this effect only lasts for an hour or so and is not usually enough to cause significant weight loss.

There's also the myth that eating certain foods will speed up your metabolism. But the reality is that even if certain foods can affect your BMR it's not nearly enough to make a noticeable difference in your weight. In order to lose weight, you must create a deficit between the calories you consume through food and the calories you burn through a combination of diet, physical activity, and passive metabolic processes that are largely out of your control.

Genetics play a key role in your BMR

The sad truth is that it's hard to change your BMR in any significant way. The fact that some people naturally have a faster BMR than others is largely due to genetics.

A review, published in 2011 in Molecular Genetics and Metabolism, that examined 9 twin studies and 19 family studies found that metabolic syndrome — and some of the symptoms associated with it including obesity, high cholesterol, and insulin resistance — are common among families, suggesting a significant heritability factor.

The exception to this rule comes up only for rare illnesses like Cushing's syndrome or hypothyroidism, which both slow metabolism.

Aging and your BMR
As you age, your metabolism becomes less efficient, or what we think of as "slowing down," says Heather Seid, a registered dietician and Bionutrition Program Manager at Columbia University.
There are many reasons your metabolism slows down, including losing muscle mass and changes in your cells. But the main reason for metabolism change is that people become less active as they get older.

Unfortunately, you can't completely stop your metabolism from slowing down as you age but exercise may give you a boost. Studies show that keeping active as you grow older can help curb a metabolism slowd
own.

Weight loss: 4 myths about metabolism you should stop believing!

Improve your metabolism easy!

In fact, your metabolism is so crucial in maintaining vital health, you need to take constant checks to keep it in the right shape. You have heard about foods that can "instantly" rev up the metabolic rate or the exercises which can ruin the efforts. However, with so many options available to us, it can be hard to separate the myth from the fact and ruin or sabotage your progress. Weight watchers, we list out the biggest metabolism mistakes that can put a damper on your efforts:

Cardio is the best bet for metabolism

Cardio helps burn calories fast, but it might not be the best bet for boosting your metabolic rate. If boosting your metabolism is what you are working towards, you need to look at exercises and workout regimes that help your body burn fat even while at rest, like muscle building, resistance training.
The same way, pushing your body to the extremes, working out for extensive hours won't necessarily rev up metabolism. In fact, doing so can prove to be costly and push your body into a stressed and inflammatory state which can mess with your BMR (Body Metabolic Rate).

You need to eat less for better health
For optimum weight loss, you need to maintain a calorie deficit, or in simpler terms, eat less and then boost your metabolism. This fact does not hold true for a reason. A change in the diet and eating pattern may bring about a change in body weight and fat regulation, but it won't necessarily accelerate your metabolism. A sudden drop or spike in your calorie intake can slow down your metabolism, which is not good news at all. For the best results, you need to fuel up your body with the right form of nutrition, at the right times.

Men and women have the same metabolism
Men and women have anatomical differences and there is also a sizeable difference in the way the hormones work. That being said, it is also widely believed that men and women lose weight differently and the reason behind this is their varied metabolic rate. This is not completely true. While men and women do tend to lose weight a little differently, metabolism is not the culprit behind. The weight loss is largely due to the muscular composition and skeletal density as we age, which, in turn, can take a toll on the metabolic rate. Metabolism, in itself, is not the culprit.

Green tea works best for metabolism
Of all the benefits of advocating regular intake of green tea, the one boosting metabolism tops the list. However, all of that is not true. Remember, while foods can improve your metabolism, it can only do that to an extent. You would still need lifestyle overhaul, workout and the right nutrition to jig up your metabolic system. Try adding the right kind of carbs, proteins, and fats to see a difference.

Why exercise won't make you lose weight

There's no shortage of things people swore to leave behind in 2018: bad jobs, bad relationships, bad habits. But chances are, you're beginning 2019 with something you didn't intend: a few extra pounds.

Every January, one of the top New Year's resolutions is to lose weight. And if you're looking to be successful, there's something you should know: Diet is far more important than exercise -- by a long shot.

"It couldn't be more true," a nutritionist said. "Basically, what I always tell people is, what you omit from your diet is so much more important than how much you exercise."

Think of it like this: All of your "calories in" come from the food you eat and the beverages you drink, but only a portion of your "calories out" are lost through exercise.

According to  an investigator, "it's generally accepted that there are three main components to energy expenditure":
  • Basal metabolic rate, the amount of energy it takes just to keep your body running (blood pumping, lungs breathing, brain functioning)
  • Breaking down food, scientifically referred to as "diet-induced thermogenesis," "specific dynamic action" or the "thermic effect of food"
  • Physical activity
For most people, basal metabolic rate accounts for 60% to 80% of total energy expenditure, the Dr. said. He cited a study that defines this as "the minimal rate of energy expenditure compatible with life." As you get older, your rate goes down, but increasing your muscle mass makes it go up.

About 10% of your calories are burned digesting the food you eat, which means roughly 10% to 30% are lost through physical activity.

"An important distinction here is that this number includes all physical activity: walking around, typing, fidgeting and formal exercise," he said. "So if the total energy expenditure from physical activity is 10% to 30%, exercise is a subset of that number.

"The average person -- professional athletes excluded -- burns 5% to 15% of their daily calories through exercise," he said. "It's not nothing, but it's not nearly equal to food intake, which accounts for 100% of the energy intake of the body."

What's more, as anyone who's worked out a day in their life can tell you, exercising ramps up appetite -- and that can sabotage even the best of intentions.

According to calculations, a 185-pound person burns 200 calories in 30 minutes of walking at 4 miles per hour (a pace of 15 minutes per mile). You could easily undo all that hard work by eating four chocolate chip cookies, 1½ scoops of ice cream or less than two glasses of wine.

Even a vigorous cycling class, which can burn more than 700 calories, can be completely canceled out with just a few mixed drinks or a piece of cake.

"It's so disproportionate -- the amount of time that you would need to [exercise] to burn off those few bites of food," he said.

The sentiment here is that you've "earned" what you eat after working out, when instead -- if your goal is to lose weight -- you'd be better off not working out and simply eating less.

Of course, not all calories are created equal, but for simplicity's sake, 3,500 calories equal 1 pound of fat. So to lose 1 pound a week, you should aim to cut 500 calories every day. If you drink soda, cutting that out of your diet is one of the easiest ways to get there.

"The other thing is that exercise can increase your appetite, especially with prolonged endurance exercise or with weight lifting," he said. "It's another reason why I tell people who want to lose weight to really just focus on diet first."

It is cliché -- but also true -- that slow and steady wins the race when it comes to weight loss. According to the experts , "evidence shows that people who lose weight gradually (about 1 to 2 pounds per week) are more successful at keeping weight off."

"All this is not to say that exercise doesn't have its place," he said. "It's certainly important for building strength and muscle mass and flexibility. It can help to manage diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. It can improve your mood. It can help fight depression. But although exercise can help with weight loss, diet is a much more important lifestyle factor."

Exercise won't make you lose weight

One of the top New Year resolutions every January is to lose weight. While people may leave behind a number of things on their journey from one year to another, what they do carry forward, are those extra kilos. In an article published, an investigator  pointed out that there are three main components to energy expenditure.

They include the basal metabolic rate, diet-induced thermogenesis (breaking down food) and physical activity. According to the investigator, for most people, basal metabolic rate accounts for 60 per cent to 80 per cent of total energy expenditure.

About 10 per cent of the calories is burned digesting the food one eats, which means roughly 10 per cent to 30 per cent are lost through physical activity.

He said, "An important distinction here is that this number includes all physical activity: walking around, typing, fidgeting and formal exercise." He added, "So if the total energy expenditure from physical activity is 10% to 30%, exercise is a subset of that number."

"The average person -- professional athletes excluded -- burns 5% to 15% of their daily calories through exercise," he said. "It's nothing, but it's not nearly equal to food intake, which accounts for 100% of the energy intake of the body."

According to a calculation made by doctors, one could easily undo the calories burnt in 30 minutes of walking could be completely cancelled out with just a few mixed drinks or a piece of cake. The conclusion by the author is that if one has to lose weight, one is better off not working out and just simply eating less.
