New study could offer protection to patients with rare genetic disease

A new  study now finds that skin cells taken from patients with a rare genetic disorder are ten times more sensitive to damage from ultraviolet A (AVA) radiation in laboratory tests than those from a healthy population.

Experts believe that the work, which has involved designing a brand new molecule with potential to be added to sun cream, could benefit those with Friedrich's Ataxia (FA), as well as those with other disorders characterised by mitochondrial iron overload, notably Wolfram Syndrome and Parkinson's disease, where UVA rays from the sun may pose particular challenges.

When cells are exposed to UVA rays, the damage caused to cells can be worsened by excess free iron in mitochondria which fuels the generation of 'free radicals', including Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which can damage DNA, protein and fats - increasing the risk of cell death and cancer.

Patients with FA have high levels of free iron in their mitochondria. The new research shows that this excess free iron makes skin cells from these patients up to 10 times more susceptible to UVA damage.

The scientists have custom-built a molecule which acts like a claw to scoop up excess iron particles within mitochondria, preventing them from amplifying UVA-induced damage. The researchers' goal is to see this molecule added to sun creams to enhance their protective effect against UVA rays.
Lead author of the study said, "A major function of mitochondria is to produce energy, and iron in the right amount is essential for their function.

He added, “Friedreich's Ataxia is one example of a disease of 'mitochondrial iron overload'. Our results -should they translate to people's skin (in vivo), suggest that patients could be up to 10 times more sensitive to UVA. The damage you and I would get in our skin from for example 2.5 hours' exposure to solar UVA would be 4-10 times higher for a patient with FRDA.”

According to him, excess iron in the mitochondria means more reactive oxidising species and more damage to cell constituents, resulting in cell functions being compromised. This situation leaves cells more sensitive to subsequent oxidative damage notably by environmental factors such as UVA of sunlight.

"We hope that our findings can be ultimately translated to the people to give them a better quality of life and that we can inspire other researchers to follow those avenues."

The team is now looking to continue the research into the chelator with an in a vivo mouse model of the disease.

Here's How Father's Vitamin D Intake Can Affect the Child's Height

We know that a woman's diet has a direct impact on her pregnancy and the health and development of the child. But what we often tend to miss that the father's health also plays an important role.
According to a new study, women's health may not be the only factor in ensuring the growth and development of the child. A new research which has been presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Portugal has found a strong link between a father's Vitamin D intake and the child's height and weight at age five.

It has been established that the mother's vitamin D intake before pregnancy plays an important role in the newborn's musculoskeletal and overall health but this time around scientists diverted their attention to asses if the father's vitamin D before conception intake can affect the child in any way and they came up with some significant results.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient also known as the sunshine vitamin. It is produced in the body when the sun’s ultra violet rays come in contact with your skin. The most important function of Vitamin D is that it regulates the amount of calcium and phosphorous in the body – both are elements that are vital for strong bones, teeth and also to keep your muscles healthy. The British Dietetics Association recommends about 15 minutes of sun exposure at least thrice a week and between 11 A.M to 3 P.M when the rays are the strongest to get your dose of Vitamin D.

Researchers from the School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science at the University College in Ireland analysed the Lifeways Cross-Generation Cohort Study and found a link between a father's vitamin D intake reported during the first pre-natal trimester and the height and weight of children at age five among 213 father-child pairs. However, their findings did not show any association between a mother's Vitamin D intake during the first and second trimester and children's weight.

The researchers also noted that three or more hours of playing outdoors over weekends was related to increased height at five years of age which further solidifies that fact that sunlight is essential for the production of Vitamin D which further helps in growth and development of the child.
