How Your Gut Affects Your Mind

Though you might already be aware that your gut can affect your overall physical condition, not many people know that the gut and brain are actually connected, too. The gut is actually rich in neural pathways, so many in fact, that some scientists fondly call it the second brain. Keep reading to learn all about how they affect one another.

At some point or another, everyone has felt “butterflies” in their stomach when nervous. That’s just one example of how your gut-brain works. Hidden deep within your digestive tract are loads of nerve cells which communicate with your brain, and can trigger emotional shifts in people who have poor gut health.
If you eat in a way that irritates your GI tract, such as by consuming plenty of processed and sugary foods, for example, you will clearly be in for a rough ride. Such food leads to spikes in blood sugar and the production of excitotoxins, a reaction which causes your gut’s nerve cells to signal your brain to enter fight or flight mode, resulting in anxiety and stress.
Conversely, you may feel a great deal of anxiety from being stuck in traffic or working in a place you hate. In such cases, your brain and body release stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which communicate with the nerves in your gut-brain, potentially causing stomach upsets, bloating, or diarrhea.

Depression, anxiety affect health as much as smoking

Being anxious or depressed can increase risks for heart disease and stroke, the same as smoking and obesity, according to a new study, that underscores the importance of treating mental health conditions. The findings showed that people with high levels of anxiety and depression are at 65 per cent higher risk for a heart condition, 64 per cent for stroke, 50 per cent for high blood pressure and 87 per cent for arthritis.

"These increased odds are similar to those of participants who are smokers or are obese," said lead author.

However, the study showed that cancer was found as an exception to conditions impacted by depression and anxiety.

"Our findings are in line with a lot of other studies showing that psychological distress is not a strong predictor of many types of cancer," said co-author of the study. He stressed the need to stop attributing cancer diagnoses to histories of stress, depression and anxiety.

The team also found that symptoms such as a headache, stomach upset, back pain and shortness of breath increased exponentially in association with high stress and depression.  Odds for a headache, for example, were 161 per cent higher in this group.

"Anxiety and depression symptoms are strongly linked to poor physical health, yet these conditions continue to receive limited attention in primary care settings, compared to smoking and obesity," he said.

The results of the study underscore the "long-term costs of untreated depression and anxiety," he noted. For the study, the team looked at the health data of more than 15,000 older adults over a four-year period.

HOME REMEDY FOR STOMACH UPSET

Ginger helps alleviate symptoms of inflammation while promoting proper blood circulation. Honey contains many essential enzymes that prevent harmful bacteria, such as E. coli and candida, from entering your body.

What you will need:
  • 1 cup of honey
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped ginger root
  • A pinch of ground ginger (optional)
Directions:
1. Pour 1 cup of honey into a saucepan and add 1 tablespoon of finely chopped ginger root.
2. You can add a small pinch of ground ginger if you’d like as well, but it does have a strong flavor.
3. On low heat let the mixture sit for 10 minutes.
4. When it’s done let it infuse for 2 hours or up to 2 weeks in a glass jar with a tightly fitting lid.
5. Strain when it’s finished if you’d like.
6. Alternatively, you can also add chopped ginger root to herbal tea.
