Zinc deficiency linked to hypertension

A study from the Wright State University in the US has found that zinc deficiency may contribute to hypertension. The study was conducted on mice and has found that zinc deficiency, which is a common imbalance found in patients of kidney disorders and type 2 diabetes, and the nutrient that is important in fighting bacteria and viruses, can also be linked to hypertension or high blood pressure.

Though the body does not require large amounts of zinc, a person can still be zinc deficient. Some common symptoms of zinc deficiency are lost appetite, low or slow growth, and poor immune system. If you experience these symptoms, you should get the zinc content in your body tested, and include the following food items in your diet.

Meat

Meat is one of the richest sources of zinc, and red meat particularly. However, there is a large content of zinc present in any kind of meat – lamb, pork, chicken. A serving of 100 g of beef has about 43% zinc required by the body of a man during the day. Include meat in your diet if you are zinc deficient to keep hypertension away.

Legumes

Chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, etc. are all rich sources of zinc and should be a part of everyone's diet, especially vegetarians. 100 g of legumes contains about 12% of the total intake of zinc as required by a male body. Legumes should be eaten frequently to keep high blood pressure under control.

Seeds

Seeds like pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds are known for their quality to reduce cholesterol. They are, therefore, healthy for the heart anyway. However, since they are high in zinc, they are again really great for the heart as they help in keeping hypertension at bay. They are also rich in fibre, which is helpful in weight loss.

Dairy products

Dairy is extremely beneficial for the heart. Milk and cheese and other dairy products are also rich in zinc, which helps to keep hypertension away. Include dairy products like curd in your everyday diet to make sure your heart stays healthy. Dairy is also great for bone health.

Eggs

Eggs help in weight loss, controlling diabetes, and are also a great food item with rich zinc content to fight zinc deficiency. Eggs are extremely easy and versatile to cook, and can be easily incorporated in your diet for a healthy heart.

One of the most widely prescribed pain and anti-inflammation drug may also slow the growth rate of cancer, a new study has found. The study focused on the effects of celecoxib or Celebrex.
It targets an enzyme called "cyclooxygenase-2" (COX-2), which is linked to pain and inflammation, researchers said. This enzyme is also critical in the creation of prostaglandins, compounds that act like hormones and play a role in promoting tumour growth, they said. COX-2 expression is typically low in normal tissue, but high in multiple types of cancers, researchers said.

"We were actually interested in determining what a particular signalling pathway does in cancer," said Joseph Kissil from The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in the US. "In the process, we found that it activates genes that promote survival of tumour cells and that they do so by turning on enzymes involved in inflammation, including COX2, which anti-inflammatory drugs like Celebrex inhibit," said Kissil.

Researchers conducted animal studies tracking the effects of celecoxib on the growth of cancer cells from a tumour type known as neurofibromatosis type II (NF2). In humans, NF2 is a relatively rare inherited form of cancer caused by mutations in the anti-tumour gene NF2, which leads to benign tumours of the auditory nerve, researchers said.

Animals received a daily dose of the drug, and tumour growth was followed by imaging. Analysis of the results showed a significantly slower tumour growth rate in celecoxib-treated models than in controls, they said. Using various approaches, the study also showed that a signalling cascade known as the Hippo-YAP pathway is involved in these results and that the protein YAP is required for the proliferation and survival of NF2 cells and tumour formation.

"Our study shows that COX2 inhibitors do have an effect on the tumour cells. They also have an impact on inflammatory responses that play a role in tumour growth," said William Guerrant from TSRI. "It is possible that in other cancers these effects might actually be stronger because of the drug's impact on inflammation," he said.

The findings were published in the journal Cancer Research.
