Women Who Suffer From Migraines May Be More Likely to Develop Dementia

Migraine may be a risk factor of dementia, especially Alzheimer’s disease. As per a study, researchers found that older women with dementia were three times more likely to have suffered from migraines in their lifetime than those without dementia.

Migraines are powerful — almost to the point of splitting — throbbing headaches, accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. They can affect anyone of any age. Globally they affect at least one in 7 people, and in India, at least 150 million suffer from it. Dementia is an overarching condition characterized by declining memory, language, problem-solving and other cognitive skills; Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes problems with one’s memory, cognition and behavior, often to the point of interfering with daily life.

One possible reason, researchers think, for the link between the two could be that migraine attacks may impede healthy lifestyles; for instance, the pain can prevent sufferers from being active, from being able to eat a healthy diet, from getting enough sleep, or from being able to exercise regularly. An unhealthy lifestyle is a known risk factor for dementia.

For the current study, researchers interviewed about 679 people with no history of cognitive issues — with their average age being about 76 years – about their experiences with migraines. More than half of the sample size were women. Participants were tracked for five years and researchers found that at least 51 women had developed dementia over that time. They also found those who developed Alzheimer’s were more than four times more likely to have experienced migraine attacks in that time.

Therefore, this current finding may be helpful in catching Alzheimer’s and other degenerative conditions earlier in life, professor and study author said. This may be an important finding, considering the chances of degeneration in women’s brains are less likely to be caught in earlier stages compared to men’s. This is because, as it was earlier reported, women outperform men on verbal memory tests, generally and in early stages of the disease, even though the degree of progression of Alzheimer’s may be the same in both.

“Identifying a midlife risk factor, such as migraines, enables earlier detection of at-risk individuals,” she said. “And identifying a link to migraines provides us with a rationale to guide new strategies to prevent Alzheimer’s disease because so far, we don’t yet have any way to cure Alzheimer’s and only know that prevention is key.”

This is How to Avoid Cataracts

The world's leading cause of blindness is cataracts. Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye becomes clouded. Responsible for letting light rays to pass onto the retina, the lens is a transparent structure mostly made up of water and protein fibers. When those fibers clump together, the lens loses its clarity, leading to blurred vision and, if left untreated, complete blindness.
Preventing Cataracts Naturally

Reducing your exposure to ultraviolet light, abstaining from cigarette-smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption all can help protect against cataract development. Here are three other possible ways to reduce your cataract risk naturally.

Fill Up on Antioxidants
In a 2008 study of 35,551 women, researchers found that those who consumed the most lutein and zeaxanthin (antioxidants found in yellow or dark-green leafy vegetables) had an 18% lower chance of developing cataracts than those who consumed the least amount of lutein and zeaxanthin.

In addition to helping absorb harmful ultraviolet light, antioxidants can help stop damaged lens-fiber proteins from clumping together and causing cataracts.

Get Your Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Known to fight inflammation, omega-3 fatty acids can help shield your eyes from cataract development, according to a 2005 study. Looking at data on 71,083 women, the study's authors discovered that those with a higher intake of omega-3s (found in oily fish like salmon and sardines, as well as in flaxseed) had a reduced risk of cataracts.

Consider Herbal Medicine

Animal-based research has shown that bilberry (an herb rich in antioxidants) and turmeric (an anti-inflammatory compound found in the curry spice turmeric) can help prevent the development of cataracts.
Causes and Symptoms

In most cases, lens fibers clump together due to aging-related deterioration. However, cataracts can also develop in younger individuals due to eye injuries, eye diseases, or inflammation.

Cataract symptoms include:

    Blurred or dim vision
    Loss of distance vision
    Sensitivity to light
Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription
    Difficulties with night vision
Tendencies to see a halo or glare around lights
    Double vision in one eye
    Loss of depth perception

It's important to note that cataracts tend to develop slowly and cause no pain. Since early detection is key to keeping cataracts in check, people ages 65 and older should get their eyes examined at least once every other year.

Using Alternative Medicine
Due to the limited research, it's too soon to recommend alternative medicine for cataract prevention or treatment. It's important to note that self-treating a condition and avoiding or delaying standard care may have serious consequences. If you're considering using alternative medicine, make sure to consult your physician first.
