These Foods Will Help You Get A Better Sleep

Sleep deprivation can cause a lot of health problems. Apart from making you feel grumpy and irritated, poor sleep may also put you at a high risk of Alzheimer's disease. In a recent study published in a journal , it was found that a sleep-deprived brain could produce more of Alzheimer's protein amyloid beta than it can dispose of.

According to the researchers, the increased levels of Alzheimer's protein amyloid beta can potentially end up with dementia. It is very important to get an adequate amount of sleep on an everyday basis as it helps the body in regaining a lot of energy.  There are certain foods that can help you in getting a good night's sleep.

Consuming a glass of warm milk before going to bed can result in a better sleep as it raises the body temperature and will end up making you feel naturally sleepy. Eating a banana before going to bed can also help you get a sound sleep as it loaded with a lot of essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Pair them with some pumpkin seeds as they contain Tryptophan, an amino acid that helps with sleep. Apart from this, walnuts are an excellent source of sleep-regulating hormone melatonin, which is claimed to improve sleep quality to a great extent.

New protein helps scientists understand Alzheimer's disease


Scientists have designed a new protein to understand the reason that leads to death of nerve cells in people suffering from Alzheimer's, an advance that can help cure the disease.

In those with Alzheimer's, Amyloid-beta (Abeta) proteins stick together to make amyloid fibrils which form clumps between neurons in the brain, researchers said.


It is believed the build-up of these clumps causes brain cells to die, leading to the cognitive decline in patients suffering from the disease, they said.

It is not known why this particular protein's "stickiness" causes cells to die and scientists have been unable to properly test whether the sticky clumps of Abeta proteins have different effects, compared with individual proteins that are not stuck together.

Now, scientists from University of Sussex in the have created a new protein which closely resembles the Abeta protein in size and shape, but contains two different amino acids (the building blocks that proteins are made up of).

These changes mean that the new protein does not form amyloid fibres or sticky clumps, and, unlike Abeta, is not toxic to nerve cells, researchers said.

The new protein will be an essential laboratory tool for those working to understand the causes and role of Abeta plays in Alzheimer's disease, they said.

"Understanding how the brain protein Abeta causes nerve cell death in Alzheimer's patients is key if we are to find a cure for this disease," said Karen Marshall from University of Sussex.

"Our study clearly shows that the aggregation of Abeta into bigger species is critical in its ability to kill cells. Stopping the protein aggregating in people with Alzheimer's could slow down the progression symptoms of the disease. We hope to work towards finding a strategy to do this in the lab and reverse the damaging effects of toxic Abeta," she said.

"This is a really exciting new tool that will contribute to research to uncover the causes for Alzheimer's disease and enable tangible progress to be made towards finding targets for therapy," added Louise Serpell from University of Sussex.

The findings were published in the journal Scientific Reports.

 One of the hypothesized causes of Alzheimer's is the over-accumulation of the protein amyloid beta (Abeta) in different areas of the brain. This results in the deposition of aggregated protein plaques, which are toxic to neurons. One of the most promising ways to fight the plaques is to "tag" the Abeta proteins with antibodies that signal the patient's own immune system to attack and clear them.
To be most effective, this treatment has to be given as early as possible, before the first signs of cognitive decline. But this requires repeated vaccine injections, which can cause side effects. Scientists at Acole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland have now solved the problem with an implant that can deliver a steady and safe flow of antibodies to the patient's brain to clear Abeta proteins.

The implant, which works by activating the body's immune system and turning it against the disease, is designed to sit underneath a person's skin, and over time, releases a steady flow of antibodies into the bloodstream.


Those antibodies then cross into the brain, where they target the beta amyloid plaques that are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease.

Scientists tested the device on genetically engineered mice and discovered that the capsule prevented the plaques from forming.


 The discovery could transform the way doctors approach Alzheimer's treatment and prevention, experts hope.

The capsule itself is based on a design from Aebischer's lab published in 2014. It is referred to as a "macroencapsulation device" and it is made of two permeable membranes sealed together with a polypropylene frame. The completed device is 27-mm long, 12-mm wide and 1.2-mm thick, and contains a hydrogel that facilitates cell growth. All the materials used are biocompatible, and the lab specifically used a method that is easily reproducible for large-scale manufacturing.

The study is published in the journal Brain.
