The ultimate hack for avoiding the harmful effects of chronic stress

Here are some facts of life: the sky is blue, grass is green,  and stress is bad for your health. Agreed? Actually, that last bit is only partly true. Stress can have a negative effect on your health, but only if you believe that it’s harmful.

We’ve long subscribed to the idea that stress is something we need to continually battle if we want a happy and healthy life. We’ve turned to coloring books and meditation apps in droves in an effort to Keep Calm and Carry On. But scientists have found the ultimate hack for avoiding the harmful effects of chronic stress is to simply believe it can’t hurt you.

Overhaul your perspective on [stress]. Instead of trying to avoid it, start accepting that it’s a part of life and explore its positive aspects, like how it can make you more driven and productive at work.

In the study, nearly 30,000 adults were asked about their stress levels and whether they thought it was harming their health. When the researchers followed up eight years later, they found that those who said they felt stressed and believed that it was hurting their health had a 43 per cent increased risk of premature death.

On the flipside, those experiencing high levels of stress but didn’t believe it was affecting their health had the lowest risk of mortality – even lower than those experiencing little stress. Mind blown yet?
“Working too hard to control and ‘manage’ your stress can backfire,” says a  clinical psychologist. “This, paradoxically, may be partly why ‘trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle’ is one of the top causes of stress for many.”

Here’s the deal – stress isn’t always the bad guy. In fact, “The stress response is a healthy physical and psychological reaction to life’s challenges, difficulties, frustrations, threats and obstacles,” the Dr.  explains.

Scientists have found the ultimate hack for avoiding the harmful effects of chronic stress is to simply believe it can’t hurt you.

A little stress can motivate you to take on new challenges, meet deadlines or escape danger. When it becomes incessant and distressing, however, it can interfere with your well-being, raising your risk of heart disease, lowering immunity and impacting your mental health. Especially if you start worrying about how much you’re worrying.

“People who are more accepting of stress suffer fewer adverse health consequences, even under chronic stress,” says Dr Johnson. “This is thought to be driven by our feelings about stress itself – feeling fearful, worried and guilty about being stressed is arguably the most corrosive aspect of the stress response.”

So, your best defense against the harmful effects of stress is to overhaul your perspective on it. Instead of trying to avoid it, start accepting that it’s a part of life and explore its positive aspects, like how it can make you more driven and productive at work. “Stress involves the internal mobilisation of resources – focus, energy, drive, activity, motivation – to do difficult and sometimes arduous things,” reveals the Dr. “Stressors are also often positive, for instance, challenges mixed with excitement, fun, adventure, mastery and new horizons.”

Feeling fearful, worried and guilty about being stressed is arguably the most corrosive aspect of the stress response.

If you’re feeling frazzled on a regular basis, watch out for the words you use to describe how you’re feeling and try giving them a positive spin. “I’m swamped with work,” for example, might become, “I have loads of exciting opportunities to work on.” Recognise that if you’re feeling stressed about a project or a situation in your life, it’s an indication that you care about the outcome – not a signal that you can’t handle the pressure. Most importantly, “Give yourself a break,” says Dr. “Don’t beat yourself up about being stressed. Make stress your friend and harness the energy of your stress response to meet the challenges in your life.”

Pregnancy is safe for breast cancer survivors

Currently there is no evidence saying breast cancer can cause any risk to mother or baby .

Breast cancer, the most prevalent cancer among Indian women, cannot deter motherhood, if intervention takes place at the right moment, say health experts. According to them, pregnancy is possible for women survivors of breast cancer- -- it does not increase risk of recurrence and neither does it cause any harm to the baby.

Yes, pregnancy is possible for breast cancer patients. Currently there is no reason or evidence to believe that becoming pregnant after breast cancer treatment can cause any risk to the mother or the baby, said a radiaton oncologist.

In a striking case from Rawanda,  a 33 year old lady conceived naturally and delivered a healthy baby 5 years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The lady was at high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer in 2013.

She completed four years of hormone blockade treatment, which blocks the action of the Estrogen Receptor (ER) on breast cancer cells. Pregnancy is not advisable while on this treatment.
Although she had her eggs frozen before chemotherapy, she conceived naturally and delivered a helathy baby after the treatment stopped.

Another 27 year old lady  was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 27 and treated in 2007, opted for breast conservation against full masectomy and delivered a healthy baby boy in 2013.

Previously there were concerns over increased risk of cancer recurrence in women who contemplate pregnancy, but it is good news that studies show no higher risk in women who conceive as compared to women who do not conceive, the Dr. said.

In yet another case, a lady treated for breast cancer in her late 30s, conceived and delivered a healthy baby, 2.5 years after her treatment. She hada history of 7 miscarriages.

However.  it is not a blanket statement for all breast cancer patient. It depends on the age of the patient. And while deciding about pregnancy, it is important to consider and talk to the patient about her age, family size and type of breast cancer ( aggressiveness and risk of recurrence) the Dr. said.

This ultraviolet light safely kills airborne flu virus:

Researchers have found that continuous low doses of "far ultraviolet C" (far-UVC) light can kill airborne flu viruses without harming human tissues.

According to the researchers, the use of overhead "far-UVC" light in public spaces could provide a powerful check on seasonal influenza epidemics, as well as influenza pandemics.

"If our results are confirmed in other settings, it follows that the use of overhead low-level far-UVC light in public locations would be a safe and efficient method for limiting the transmission and spread of airborne-mediated microbial diseases" said the lead author of the study.

Influenza virus spreads from person to person mainly through fine liquid droplets, or aerosols, that become airborne when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk.

This study, published was designed to test if "far-UVC" light could efficiently kill aerosolised influenza virus in the air, in a setting similar to a public space, the researchers said.

In the study, aerosolised H1N1 virus -- a common strain of flu virus -- was released into a test chamber and exposed to very low doses of 222 nm "far-UVC" light.

A control group of aerosolized virus was not exposed to the UVC light. The "far-UVC" light efficiently inactivated the flu viruses, with about the same efficiency as conventional germicidal UV light.

"The 'far-UVC' light has a very limited range and cannot penetrate through the outer dead-cell layer of human skin or the tear layer in the eye, so it's not a human health hazard," the researcher said.
"But because viruses and bacteria are much smaller than human cells, far-UVC light can reach their DNA and kill them," the researcher noted.
