Pregnancy is safe for breast cancer survivors

Currently there is no evidence saying breast cancer can cause any risk to mother or baby .

Breast cancer, the most prevalent cancer among Indian women, cannot deter motherhood, if intervention takes place at the right moment, say health experts. According to them, pregnancy is possible for women survivors of breast cancer- -- it does not increase risk of recurrence and neither does it cause any harm to the baby.

Yes, pregnancy is possible for breast cancer patients. Currently there is no reason or evidence to believe that becoming pregnant after breast cancer treatment can cause any risk to the mother or the baby, said a radiaton oncologist.

In a striking case from Rawanda,  a 33 year old lady conceived naturally and delivered a healthy baby 5 years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The lady was at high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer in 2013.

She completed four years of hormone blockade treatment, which blocks the action of the Estrogen Receptor (ER) on breast cancer cells. Pregnancy is not advisable while on this treatment.
Although she had her eggs frozen before chemotherapy, she conceived naturally and delivered a helathy baby after the treatment stopped.

Another 27 year old lady  was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 27 and treated in 2007, opted for breast conservation against full masectomy and delivered a healthy baby boy in 2013.

Previously there were concerns over increased risk of cancer recurrence in women who contemplate pregnancy, but it is good news that studies show no higher risk in women who conceive as compared to women who do not conceive, the Dr. said.

In yet another case, a lady treated for breast cancer in her late 30s, conceived and delivered a healthy baby, 2.5 years after her treatment. She hada history of 7 miscarriages.

However.  it is not a blanket statement for all breast cancer patient. It depends on the age of the patient. And while deciding about pregnancy, it is important to consider and talk to the patient about her age, family size and type of breast cancer ( aggressiveness and risk of recurrence) the Dr. said.

A study shows that breast cancer patients can benefit from having the cheap and widely-available female hormone progesterone added to their treatment.

Tumors fuelled by the female hormone estrogen are treated with drugs like tamoxifen to block estrogen receptors, which cause cancer cells to grow.

Women whose tumors have progesterone receptors as well are known to have a better outlook, but scientists for decades could not pinpoint why, said the study that appeared in the journal Nature.

Now, a team of scientists has revealed how the progesterone receptor 'talks to' the estrogen receptor in breast cancer cells to change their behavior, ultimately slowing down tumor growth.

"We have used cutting-edge technology to tease out the crucial role that progesterone receptors play in breast cancer - a mystery that has baffled scientists for many years," said lead author Jason Carroll from at Cancer Research UK's Cambridge Research Institute.

"This research helps explain why some breast cancer patients have a better outlook," Carroll said.

"This study in the cells shows how a cheap, safe, and widely available drug could potentially improve treatment for around half of all breast cancer patients," concluded Emma Smith, senior science communication officer at Cancer Research UK's Cambridge Research Institute.

Gene responsible for the worst type of breast cancer identified

Triple negative breast cancer is the type of cancer of which is most difficult to treat as genes for genes for estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and Her2/neu are not expressed and chemotherapies involved in the treatment target one of these receptors. This type of cancer is now linked to the deficiency in a gene that controls autophagy, a process that recycles or degrades cell waste.

The researchers at the UT Southwestern Medical Center, analysed the two large databases of breast cancer and found that  activity of an autophagy gene, beclin 1, was related to both a higher incidence of triple-negative breast cancer and a poorer prognosis for breast cancer patients.

Low beclin 1 expression increases the risk of having a triple negative breast cancer by 35 times, Dr. Beth Levine, Director of the Center for Autophagy Research, informed. Along with this increased risk the findings showed, low levels of beclin 1 activity also correlated with worse outcomes.

These findings throw light on new therapies for treating triple negative breats cancer by increasing beclin 1 activity. Several approved drugs that happen to increase beclin 1 activity are already used for other types of cancer. They included four classes of drugs: inhibitors of either beclin 1/BCL-2 binding, protein kinase B (AKT), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), or HER2.

Dr. Levine’s research team studies genes involved in the autophagy process and their roles in cancer, aging, infections, and neurodegenerative diseases, while Dr. Xie’s UT Southwestern lab focuses on improving cancer treatments through statistical and computational analysis of biological and clinical data.
