Allergy season worsens with changing climate

You already know that allergy season has arrived when you sneeze your head off frequently. A new study has found that allergy season has worsened because of increased pollen count and changing climate.

As reported earlier, low-income households and kids tend to be at higher risk of catching diseases like asthma, because of exposure to pollen.

With rising temperature, the situation is likely tog et worse for allergies because plants like ragweed will start migrating.

Warmer temperatures allow the trees to pollinate earlier and for longer times. We aren't used to see our cars covered in pollen before March, but we do now, and we hear from people all the time who are dealing with allergies for a lot longer than they used to when they're younger.

If the temperature continues to increase at its current stride, it is expected that by the end of the century, the growing season will be longer by about a month in most parts of the world. Places that did not witness the pollen-producing flora will soon see them in plenty, exposing whole new population to pollen.

It's not just the warmer temperatures adding to our misery. Plants love some carbon-di-oxide, and when there is more of it in the atmosphere due to the greenhouse gases causing climate change, they flourish. Studies on ragweed show that the amount of pollen the plant produces actually doubles with higher levels of CO2. The pollen becomes more potent too, according to the researchers. There are similar patterns for grass pollen and other plants.

The impact of technology on healthcare has made available plentiful of allergy medication at the pharmacy. The consulted doctor should be able to help identify what triggers the allergies, so one avoid them.

Spend possibly east duration outside between 10 am and 2 pm, especially on days when the researchers say the pollen count is high in your neighbourhood.

Use AQI monitoring mobile applications to track the quality of air around.

To prevent pollen to enter inside, leave your footwear at the door. Change your clothes of you've been outside for a long duration. Tidy the pets who have to go out.

Hair works a bit like a mop, collecting pollen that's floating in the air, said a Dr. Since hair is the closest thing to your nasal passages, it can really bother you. If you wash it brush it out before you go to sleep, or at least cover it, then you won't be sleeping in all that pollen.

Climate change can also be controlled through simple amendments inside the hone like- turning out the lights while leaving the room, using energy-efficient light bulbs, unplug electronic appliances when not in use, do not use hot water for washing clothes and most important use public transport or carpool to reduce the number of trips you take in the car. All of these can help to control greenhouse gases emission in the environment.

Make sure to carry good quality mask to prevent asthma and allergy.

Vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters are helpful to improve indoor air quality.

Also, make sure it has asthma and allergy friendly certification mark to make sure they'll be your best defense against the yellow stuff.

"Alcohol appears to impair the body’s ability to keep microbes in check. When those barriers breakdown, bacteria that does not normally colonise the liver end up there"

Alcohol allows gut bacteria to migrate to the liver, promoting alcohol—induced liver disease, a new study has warned.

Researchers from University of California (UC), San Diego in U.S. conduced the study in mice and in laboratory samples.

They previously found that chronic alcohol consumption is associated with lower intestinal levels of REG3 lectins, which are naturally occurring antimicrobials.

In the new study, researchers discovered that REG3G deficiency promotes progression of alcohol—induced liver disease.

Mice engineered to lack REG3G and fed alcohol for eight weeks were more susceptible to bacterial migration from the gut to the liver than normal mice who received the same amount of alcohol.
REG3G—deficient mice also developed more severe alcoholic liver disease than normal mice.

To find methods for stemming the tide of liver—damaging microbes, researchers tried experimentally bumping up copies of the REG3G gene in intestinal lining cells grown in the lab.

They found that more REG3G reduced bacterial growth.

Likewise, restoring REG3G in mice protected them from alcohol—induced fatty liver disease, a condition that precedes end—stage cirrhosis.

Liver cirrhosis is also known as end—stage liver disease.
Approximately half of the deaths from this condition are related to alcohol consumption.

Human small intestine samples supported some of the researcher’s finding in mice. Not only do patients with alcohol dependency have lower levels of REG3G than healthy people, they also have more bacteria growing there, the study found.

“Alcohol appears to impair the body’s ability to keep microbes in check. When those barriers breakdown, bacteria that does not normally colonise the liver end up there, and now we have found that this bacterial migration promotes alcohol liver disease,” said Bernd Schnabl from UC.

“Strategies to restore the body’s defences might help us treat the disease,” Mr. Schnabl said.

The findings were published in the journal Cell Host & Microbe.
