5 Essential Oils That Are Highly Beneficial to Your Brain

It's well-known that a healthy lifestyle plays a very important role in brain health. However, at the same time, essential oils are also very beneficial for brain power.

Herbal practitioners, as well as modern medicine, have acknowledged the benefits different essential oils give to the brain. These oils can help with different cognitive problems such as mental fatigue, low clarity, poor intellectual performance, impaired concentration, poor memory recall, and impaired memory, to name but a few.

These oils are mostly used in aromatherapy. The reason for this is because smell is the strongest of our senses and is best able to influence brain activity. However, before learning how essential oils can be used to boost your brain power, it's important to know which essential oils are the best for this purpose.

Therefore, below you can find the best essential oils for brain health.

How to Use the Aforementioned Essential Oils to Improve Brain Health

There are many different ways in which you can use the powerful aroma of these essential oils to improve brain power and boost your mental health. The six best methods can be found below.

1. Handkerchief Method
This is the simplest method. You just need to place 2-3 drops of the essential oil of your choice onto a handkerchief and sniff it occasionally. You can also place the handkerchief near your pillow before going to sleep. This way you can enjoy the benefits of the essential oil even when you're sleeping.

2. Pot and Water Method
Another method you can use is the pot and water method. Simply: 1. Place some water in a small pot. 2. Add 6-7 drops of your preferred essential oil. 3. Allow the water to boil. 4. Turn down the heat and keep the pot on the burner for a couple of minutes to allow the essential oil to evaporate into the air.

3. Aromatherapy Bath/Massage

For an aromatherapy bath:
1. Mix 3 drops of your preferred essential oil in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil (olive oil, coconut oil, or sweet almond oil).
2. Add this oil blend to a bathtub filled with water and mix thoroughly using your hand.
3. Enjoy this relaxing bath for 15-20 minutes, a couple of times a week.

For an aromatherapy massage:
1. Place 2 tablespoons of carrier oil like sweet almond oil into a bowl.
2. Mix 10-12 drops of your preferred essential oil to the bowl.
 3. Massage your forehead, temples, and/or back of the neck with this solution.
4. Do this a few times per week.
Note: Don't get any of the oil into your eyes.

4. Homemade Solid Perfume Method
You can improve your mental power by blending some essential oils into solid perfumes. You can use a mixture of different essential oils or choose just the one depending on your preference. Method:
1. Open a container of any commercial solid perfume or homemade solid perfume.
2. Put a few drops of essential oil on the top of it.
3. Close the lid properly.
4. Whenever you require it, just dab a small bit of the perfume on your temples.

5. Mister Method
Essential Oils - Brain - Health

You can also get the benefits of aromatherapy by creating a mister. Method:
1. Add 1-6 drops of essential oil to a spray bottle filled with distilled water.
2. Give it a good shake and spray the oil-infused water in and around your surroundings.
3. Use it when needed and change frequently.

6. Candle Diffuser Method
Before using this method, you must buy a candle diffuser. These are readily available on the market - you can try any shop that sells essential oils. Method:
1. Put water on the top bowl of the candle diffuser and then add a few drops of essential oil to it.
2. Light a tea light underneath so that the heat evaporates the essential oil into the air around you.

Note: Essential oils can be flammable, so be careful when using this method.

The Benefits, Uses and Side Effects of CBD Oil

As more states legalize the use of marijuana, a product known as CBD oil has increased in popularity. There is a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant, CBD, or cannabidiol. This is non-intoxicating and does not cause the noticeable euphoric effects associated with tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, another marijuana compound. Bear in mind that products marketed as CBD oil may contain THC.

It is believed that CBD might affect your health by attaching to receptors in the body's endocannabinoid system - a complex biological system that is involved in maintaining certain aspects of your health. Emerging research illustrates that endocannabinoids may play a role in regulating such functions as memory, sleep and mood, and also metabolic processes like energy balance.

When you purchase CBD oil, what you are getting is a carrier oil which contains CBD and other active compounds. CBD oil comes in many forms, including soft gel capsules, tinctures, and under-the-tongue sprays. There are some forms of CBD oil which can be directly applied to the skin. They come in the form of products like creams and salves. The concentration of CBD varies from product to product.

Uses
It has been claimed that CBD oil can treat a wide variety of health issues that range from everyday ailments to chronic medical conditions. These issues include:
  • Acne
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic pain
  • Depression
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • Insomnia
  • Loss of appetite and body weight
  • Muscle spasms
  • Parkinson's disease
CBD oil has also been said to promote sounder sleep. It can reduce inflammation and pain, fight oxidative stress, improve heart health, support weight loss and protect against some forms of cancer.
The benefits
CBD oil is used for various health-related purposes, but there isn't a great deal of research on the oil's potential health benefits. But, there is significant support for its effectiveness in the treatment of some forms of epilepsy. In fact, the FDA approved a drug used for epilepsy, Epidiolex, a drug made with a purified form of CBD oil, in June 2018. This drug is used for the treatment of seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy in patients two years of age and older. It is the first-FDA-approved drug that contains a purified drug substance derived from marijuana.

In addition, CBD has also shown promise in the treatment of anxiety disorders, according to a report published in the journal Neurotherapeutics in 2015. When looking at results from experimental research, clinical trials and epidemiological studies, the authors discovered evidence that CBD may help treat generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, the authors caution that human-based research on CBD and anxiety is rather limited at this point.

Furthermore, a small study published in the journal JCI Insight in 2017, discovered that CBD may help prevent stress-related changes in blood pressure, affecting heart health. The study examined nine healthy male volunteers who took a single dose of either CBD or a placebo. In comparison to those given the placebo, those treated with CBD had lower blood pressure before and after experiencing a stressful event.

CBD oil has also been found to offer some form of benefit to those who suffer from an addiction. This was stated in a review published in the Journal of Substance Abuse in 2015. In their analysis of 14 previously published studies, scientists determined that CBD may offer therapeutic effects in people with opioid, cocaine, and/or psychostimulant addiction. They also discovered that CBD may be beneficial in the treatment of cannabis and tobacco addiction. There is some evidence that CBD may block or reduce the effects of THC on the mind.

Some side effects
There is some research which indicates that the use of CBD oil, may trigger a number of side effects, some of which include:
  • Anxiety
  • Changes in appetite
  • Changes in mood
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
Some concern has also indicated that the use of CBD oil may lead to increased levels of liver enzymes - a marker of liver damage or inflammation.

Safety concerns
It is important that you are aware that CBD oil may interact with several medications, including some types of anti-epileptic drugs. A report from the AAP, American Academy of Pediatrics published in the journal Pediatrics cautions pregnant women and nursing mothers, recommending they avoid marijuana use due to possible adverse developmental effects to their baby. In one study, it was found that children with refractory epilepsy treated with CBD experienced an aggravation of seizures, sleepiness, digestive disturbances, and irritability.

Diabetes drug may help treat Alzheimer’s

A drug created to treat type 2 diabetes could be used to fight Alzheimer’s disease, say scientists who found that the medicine significantly reversed memory loss in mice. The research could bring substantial improvements in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease through the use of a drug originally created to treat type 2 diabetes. The treatment “holds clear promise of being developed into a new treatment for chronic neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease,” said a researcher.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia and the numbers are expected to rise to more than two million people in many countries by 2051 according to researchers. Although the benefits of these ‘triple agonist’ drugs have so far only been found in mice, other studies with existing diabetes drugs such as liraglutide have shown real promise for people with Alzheimer’s, so further development of this work is crucial. This is the first time that a triple receptor drug has been used which acts in multiple ways to protect the brain from degeneration.

It combines GLP-1, GIP and Glucagon which are all growth factors. Problems with growth factor signalling have been shown to be impaired in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. The study used APP/PS1 mice, which are transgenic mice that express human mutated genes that cause Alzheimer’s. Those genes have been found in people who have a form of Alzheimer’s that can be inherited. Aged transgenic mice in the advanced stages of neurodegeneration were treated. In a maze test, learning and memory formation were much improved by the drug which also enhanced levels of a brain growth factor which protects nerve cell functioning. It also reduced the amount of amyloid plaques in the brain linked with Alzheimer’s, chronic inflammation and oxidative stress.

The drug also slowed down the rate of nerve cell loss. “These very promising outcomes demonstrate the efficacy of these novel multiple receptor drugs that originally were developed to treat type 2 diabetes but have shown consistent neuro- protective effects in several studies,” said a researcher. “Clinical studies with an older version of this drug type already showed very promising results in people with Alzheimer’s disease or with mood disorders,” he said. “Here we show that a novel triple receptor drug shows promise as a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s but further dose-response tests and direct comparisons with other drugs have to be conducted in order to evaluate if this new drugs is superior to previous ones,” he added.

Type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s and has been implicated in the progression of the disease. Insulin desensitisation has also been observed in the Alzheimer’s disease brain. The desensitisation could play a role in the development of neurodegenerative disorders as insulin is a growth factor with neuroprotective properties.

To remember something

If you want to make sure to remember something, timing is key. Encoding information before you go to sleep is one of the best ways to help your memory. This is because memory consolidation happens when you’re sleeping - that's when all the short-term memories are transferred to the long-term memory. If you want to do well on a test or work presentation, it’s best to review before you head to bed.
