Neck and shoulder pain could be warning signs of THIS medical condition

Have you ever woken up to excruciating pain in the shoulders and neck? How often do you experience this? Have you ever thought of consulting a doctor? Or do you ignore it assuming it would wane away soon?
Many of us associate shoulder pain to bad sitting posture or sleeping position and ignore it assuming that it will go away when it has to.

Leaving pain unattended is as harmful as the pain itself.
We  spoke to experts on why one experiences neck and shoulder pain and what could be the medical conditions which trigger pain in these areas. The experts also suggested what lifestyle changes one must adopt in order to alleviate such pain.

Common causes of neck and shoulder pain

"Sprains and strains from sports, overexertion, and poor posture are the most common causes of neck and shoulder pain," says Dr. Satnam Singh Chhabra, Director, department of Neurosurgery, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and adds that some people have stiffness in their neck, shoulder, or back as they wake up. Mattresses, pillows, and sleeping postures all have an impact on how much strain a person's neck, shoulder, and spine suffers when sleeping.

Strains from overexertion, dislocated shoulder, spinal cord injury and damage to bones and cartilage due to arthritis also cause immense pain in shoulders.

Dr Chhabra also warns against carrying heavy shoulder bags or purses.

Frozen shoulders are also the main reason why many people experience terrible pain in shoulders and despite trying home remedies do not get any relief, the expert says.

What is a frozen shoulder? What are its symptoms?

Frozen shoulder, or medically termed as adhesive capsulitis is a condition characterized by stiffness with reduced movements and pain in shoulder joint. "It is commonly seen in Diabetic and post injury immobilized patients," says Dr. Rajendra Reddy, Sr. Orthopaedic Consultant and Head of Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma, Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, HSR Layout, Bangalore.

"In this case, the capsule which is the covering layer of the joint holding the bones together becomes thick, stiff and inflamed causing adhesions and fibrosis thereby reducing the space for the Humeral head movement in the joint and reducing the range of movements," Dr Reddy says.

This painful condition emerges slowly and advances into three stages and each stage can last for a number of months, says Dr Reddy. In the first stage, shoulder movements are painful and in due course movement restrictions are noted; pain in upper parts of arm and behind the shoulder are common. In the second stage pain improves but movements become more restrictive, stiffer and using it becomes more difficult. Pain also worsens at night and thereby significantly disturbing the sleep which can lead to a series of cascading effects that negatively affects many elements of a person’s day-to-day lifestyle, including their relationships at home and at work. In the third stage, which is also called thawing stage, in people with other obstructive pathology like bony spurs or tendinopathies the condition advances to shoulder impingement and full recovery may never be seen, the expert says.

What underlying disease can cause pain in the neck and shoulder?

Osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease and disorder in the rotator cuff which surrounds the shoulder joint and helps to keep it stable can be a cause for shoulder pain as it can damage the tissues in the shoulder, says Dr Chhabra.

When should one start taking shoulder and neck pain seriously?

In most cases, Dr Chhabra says, neck and shoulder pain can be a symptom of a more serious problem however one should get it checked if the pain continues for more days. "If the pain is accompanied by numbness or loss of strength in your arms or hands or persists for several weeks without any relief or if you have shooting pain into your shoulder or down your arm or if the shoulder pain is accompanied by redness or swelling then one should visit the doctor," advises Dr Chhabra.

Hinting towards the possibility of heart attack due to shoulder pain, Dr Chhabra says, "shoulder pain should be taken seriously if the pain goes down to the chest and there's a difficulty in breathing which can be a sign for heart attack or stroke."

What are the lifestyle changes one must adopt?

Lifestyle changes do play an important role in managing shoulder pain, says Dr Reddy. Diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish contain proteolytic enzymes and Omega 3 fatty acids are known to be helpful, while a reduction in carbohydrates and saturated trans fats can do wonders.

He advises cutting down on a sedentary lifestyle and having more physical activity.

"One should pay attention to posture and sleeping position. Don’t sleep on the affected side and during sleeping on back do always use a pillow under the affected arm, with the hand resting on the stomach," says Dr Reddy.

On self medications which people often take during pain, Dr Reddy says "if self medications are not helpful in a couple of weeks, it may never be helpful. Seeking medical advice in these situations is important to prevent further damage and aid in faster recovery."

Few common questions related to neck and shoulder pain answered:

  1. What causes neck and shoulder pain?
Sprains and strains from sports, overexertion, and poor posture, overexertion, dislocated shoulder, spinal cord injury, frozen shoulder and damage to bones and cartilage cause neck and shoulder pain.

Don't Ignore the Expiry Dates for These Foods

Think a sniff test or a quick glance can always tell you if food is off and should be thrown away? Think again! Looks and smells can sometimes be deceiving, which is why the expiration dates that are stamped on packaging can guide you and help prevent illness. Below are ten foods that you should never consume once the expiration date has passed.

1. Egg Substitutes
A carton of eggs has a little more leeway than their boxed substitutes, but both need to be consumed in a timely manner. So, if you’re debating whether to finish off that two-week-old carton of whites – don’t! It’s safe to keep eggs in the fridge for three to five weeks if they’re in a shell, but for egg substitutes, you only have about 3-5 days on average once they’re open. If they’re unopened then you have about 10 days.

2. Soft Cheeses

Harder cheeses such as cheddar or Gouda have a longer shelf life because it’s more difficult for mold and bacteria to permeate them. Once opened, these cheeses can last up to 6 months in the fridge. However, softer cheeses such as goat cheese, ricotta, or cream cheese are more susceptible to mold and bacteria and should be thrown away at the first sign of spoiling or once the expiration date has passed. As a general rule, soft cheeses last about a week in the fridge once opened.

3. Jarred Condiments

It might seem like spreads and sauces last forever, but just because they’re in a glass jar tucked away in the fridge, doesn’t mean they’re protected from bacteria. Once the lid has been opened, the safety seal is broken, and the condiment should be consumed in a timely fashion. Furthermore, when we make sandwiches, for example, we dip our knife into the spread container and wipe it on the bread and then dip it back into the container. By doing this, you’re putting some of that bacteria back into the container. Jarred condiments tend to have more exposure to bacteria and therefore they can lead to foodborne illnesses if not trashed at the appropriate time. If you notice water floating on the top, some discoloration, or weird smells, it’s safer to just throw it out.

4. Cold-Pressed Juice

Green juices might be filling up your social media feeds each day, but they shouldn’t find a permanent home in your fridge. Cold-pressed or raw juices are incredibly popular among the health-conscious since they’re full of nutrients, but it’s important to consume them very soon after buying. Unlike typically processed juices which undergo pasteurization to destroy harmful bacteria and increase shelf life, these raw juices are not pasteurized, making them much more prone to contamination by bacteria.

5. Fresh Meat

When it comes to fresh meat, you’re usually dealing with a “sell by” date, which tells the store the last day it can keep that product out for sale. So, what does this mean for you? Well, you either need to eat it or freeze it when you get home.

6. Ground Meats

Ground meats should be eaten or frozen within two days of purchase. This applies to beef, turkey, pork, lamb, and any other type of ground meat. Since it’s ground, the bacteria that were originally present on the surface might be mixed throughout the meat, increasing your risk of contracting food poisoning or another illness.

7. Fish

Fish are no less prone to bacteria than meat and should be consumed in one or two days after purchase. Otherwise, Whole Foods advises tightly wrapping it in moisture-proof freezer paper or foil and putting it in the freezer.

8. Fresh Berries

Whether you buy them from the store or farmer’s market, berries have a short lifespan. Raspberries and strawberries are only good for about three days after purchase, while blueberries can last a couple of days longer in the fridge. After that, they turn mushy and become susceptible to a bacteria called cyclospora cayetanensis, which can cause bloating, diarrhea, vomiting, and other food poisoning symptoms.

I found a simple way to make the strawberry last long without getting spoiled. I washed it in water adding little vinegar, then stored it. Normally the berries which was getting spoiled within 2 days, didn't get spoiled ! Simple trick, which surely help to save your expensive and healthy berries longer.

9. Leafy Greens
Yup, even those packaged ones that are pre-washed. Leafy greens have the potential to carry bacteria such as E. coli because they’re touched by so many hands. For your own safety, wash all types of greens before eating them and never consume them after the date on the packaging.

10. Sprouts

Sprouts are grown in warm climates, which makes them ideal breeding grounds for bacteria right off the bat. Eat them past their ideal date (about two days after purchase) and your risk of getting sick increases. If you’re already sick or pregnant, avoid them altogether.

What happens to your body when you hold your pee?

You may not know but holding your pee for an extended period of time can be harmful in a number of ways. The truth is that going to the washroom is a necessity for everyone, although finding a place to go may not be always convenient. So, when you feel the urge to urinate, it tells that your body needs to get rid of those toxic waste products. Urination is a complex process involving various muscles, organs, and nerves that work together to tell you that it’s time to go.

So, it is important to not ignore the urge to empty your bladder. The human bladder can hold up to 16 ounces, or 2 cups, of urine, but the perception of feeling full varies from person to person as it depends on a number of factors and how fast the bladder fills.

Know the health risks of holding urine

Holding pee for a short time may not be harmful, but when you don't empty your bladder on a regular basis, it can have grave health outcomes. Ignoring the urge to pee can increase the risk of certain health problems, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). This may be due to the fact that the urine standing in the bladder can increase the bacteria growth there.

Other possible complications that can arise from not emptying bladder may include an infection or kidney damage. This is possible because your bladder is a part of your urinary system and is connected through the ureters to your kidneys. Holding urine may be particularly bad for people who have certain conditions such as - enlarged prostate, neurogenic bladder, kidney disorders, urinary retention, etc - as they can increase the risk of infection or kidney disease.

Pregnant women, who are already at an increased risk for UTIs, should not hold their urine at all.

The bottom line is that it’s best to have healthy bladder habits and consider using the bathroom, especially when drinking fluids. This will help you to keep your bladder healthy as well as maintain the kidneys in perfect conditions.
