Woman's 'Allergies' Were Actually Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak

When a lady complained to doctors of an unusually runny nose, headaches and trouble getting to sleep, they put her symptoms down to an allergy. But years later, specialists confirmed her “waterfall” nose was in fact caused by fluid leaking out of her brain.

The lady first noticed the symptoms following a car accident in 2013, when she hit her head on the dashboard.  “The running nose was like a waterfall, continuously, and then it would run to the back of my throat,” she told local news station.

“I couldn’t sleep,” she continued. “I was like a zombie.”

After years of struggling, she visited the ear, nose and throat clinic at a hospital. Doctors there diagnosed her with a cerebrospinal fluid leak (CSF). She was found to be losing, on average, half a pint of brain fluid every day, she told.

Cerebrospinal fluid circulates through the brain's ventricles and around the spinal cord. A leak can happen when the watery liquid seeps through a layer in the brain called the dura, the skull itself, or out through the nose or ear, according to literature from the doctors.
Head injuries or damage caused by brain or sinus surgery can cause the fluid to leak. Symptoms include headaches, a runny nose, visual disturbances, tinnitus and a potentially deadly bout of meningitis. These symptoms get markedly worse when the person sits or stands, according to the doctors.

CSF will often heal on its own. However, due to the risk of meningitis more severe cases of the condition can be treated with endonasal endoscopic surgery—where medics operate on a patient using a camera and tools sent through the nose.

In this lady's case, doctors used her fatty tissue to plug the leak. She is now recovering following surgery earlier this year.

“I don’t have to carry around the tissue anymore and I’m getting some sleep,” she told .

Silent Migraine Symptoms

What makes a silent migraine different to experiencing a full-blown one is that the actual migraine never actually shows up. Symptoms usually include feeling foggy, coordination that’s a little off, or feelings of uneasiness.
How Many People Suffer From Silent Migraines?
It’s said that a quarter of all migraine sufferers experience a migraine aura prior to their migraine setting in. This usually includes visual, sensory or speech disturbances, as well as seeing spots, lights or zigzags. Some also report numbness or tingling in one arm, or having trouble speaking.  A migraine would typically hit about half an hour after these symptoms are experienced.
What Are the Symptoms Like?
Luckily, migraine auras usually last just 15 to 20 minutes, but there are exceptions. Some individuals report experiencing continuous auras, meaning that the symptoms continue to present themselves throughout the day or stick around longer than usual.
Are Silent Migraines Easily Treatable?
Migraines have always been difficult for medical practitioners to treat, and this is because symptoms differ greatly from patient to patient. In fact, it’s said that no two are alike, and they actually change over a sufferer’s lifetime.
Postdrome Symptoms
In the aftermath of a migraine, it’s also possible to experience postdrome symptoms. These usually present themselves the day after a migraine itself, and they tend to feel like a hangover. Postdrome symptoms can also leave individuals feeling washed out and unable to think as sharply as they normally would, and are usually associated with silent migraines.
Treatment Options
Silent migraines can be treated with preventative migraine drugs, but they won’t necessarily help everyone. In some instances, off-label use of anti-epileptic medications might work to treat them, and this is because they can help to stabilize the function of brain cells.
If you happen to experience visual symptoms such as spots, flashes or sparkles, you might be inclined to see an ophthalmologist, but the likelihood is that they won’t be much help. These symptoms are better seen to by a headache specialist.
The Importance of Getting a Diagnosis
An eye-opening statistic in this regard is that half of all migraine sufferers never actually get a proper diagnosis, and only half of those diagnosed are ever prescribed treatment by their physicians. Although a primary care physician is a good place to start if you’re seeking treatment for migraines, you’ll likely need to be referred to a headache clinic or neurologist.

Advanced treatment for brain aneurysm conducted at AIMS

Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) here has performed the most advanced treatment for brain aneurysm, the 'flow diverter pipeline stent', the First of its kind in a private hospital in Kerala.

The treatment was performed by a team of doctors Endovascular Division, Neurosurgery Department of AIMS, on a woman patient who had developed disturbances in vision due to a large aneurysm of the brain. The patient was discharged from the hospital within three days after 'the flow diverter pipeline stent' procedure, a press release said.

Aneurysms of the brain's blood vessels are abnormal balloon-like projections that form on the wall of an artery. When these rupture, they can cause disasters. Some patients have complex aneurysms that are large and involve multiple branches of the blood vessel. Traditionally treated with major open skull base surgery and clipping, but the surgery is very complex and required longer hospital stay, the release said.

In the flow diverter Pipeline Embolization Device (PED) which is American FDA approved, is a new alternative that allows for a more natural healing of the aneurysm avoiding a major open surgery.
The device is attached to the end of a catheter that is inserted through the Femoral artery in the right leg. The catheter is threaded into the carotid artery of the brain and into its final position where it is then expanded against the walls of the artery to block off the mouth of the aneurysm, thus cutting off the blood flow into the aneurysm which later shrinks and heals over the next few months. The device also reduces the risk of the aneurysm rupture.

The procedure considerably reduces the hospital stay of the patient to two or three days and the recovery is fast in comparison with similar open surgeries.

Amrita Hospital is one of the only six centers in India that is performing this specialized procedure. The Neurovascular center at Amrita Institute is also providing facilities to tackle the most difficult disease conditions involving the brain's blood vessels - including complex neurosurgical procedures, aneurysm coiling/stenting and stereotactic radiosurgery for vascular malformations of the brain.

The division also offers regular disease-specific screening programmes for carotid disease and stroke prevention, early detection of diseases of the brain's blood vessels.
