3 Exercises for Shoulder Aches

When you spend most of your day hunched over, your shoulders will pay the price. But when you're feeling achy, there are plenty of stretches that you can do to ease the pain. The below three moves will help you improve your shoulder mobility that will loosen your shoulders and correct imbalances caused by bad posture. To do these exercises all you need is a kettle bell and a resistance band. The key to remedying shoulder discomfort is to put the time into your treatment. Consequently, these exercises will improve the aches you feel. All it takes is just four minutes each morning and evening. Give it a go:

Exercise 1: Egyptians

achy shoulders

Here's How:
• Keep your feet slightly wider than your hips.
• Reach your arms out by your sides to shoulder height keeping your palms facing down.
• Lean your torso to one side and turn that palm up, externally rotating your shoulder.
• At the same time turn the back palm up, internally rotating your shoulder.
• Return to center, then switch sides. The side-to-side action will pivot your shoulders inward and outward.
• Repeat for one minute at a pace of one repetition per two seconds.

Exercise 2: Halos

achy shoulders

Here's How:
• Use the kettle bell in this exercise to give your shoulders greater range of motion for the movement. Use a dumbbell or just clench your hands together if you don't have a kettle bell.
• Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a medium-weight kettle bell at the center of your chest by the side handles with the bottom of the bell facing up.
• Clench your glutes tight and brace through your abs to protect your back as you move through this exercise.
• Gently loop the bell behind your head and neck, then around the other side.
• Now loop the next halo in the other direction.
• Repeat for two minutes at a pace for one repetition, per 10 seconds.

Exercise 3: Band Pull-Aparts

achy shoulders

Here's How:
• This exercise helps train the shoulders to move in the opposite direction that they usually move when you slouch. Using band pull-aparts help sculpt your upper back too.
• Start with your feet shoulder-width apart.
• Clutch your hands on a medium resistance band and hold them straight ahead and in line with each of your shoulders. You should feel some tension between your hands.
• Draw your arms out to the sides and stretch the band with your elbows slightly bent.
• Hold the pose momentarily, then resist the pull.
• Take three times as long to slowly bring your arms back to starting position.
• So, take one second to pull out and three seconds to return.
• Repeat this exercise for a minute in total, or about 15 repetitions.

Heart abnormalities from premature birth can be corrected with exercise in young adulthood

People who suffer from heart abnormalities due to preterm birth could correct the damage with exercise in young adulthood, according to a study. Around one to two per cent of adults today were born more than two months prematurely (very preterm) and have heart abnormalities that increase their risk of cardiovascular disease.

For instance, the heart is smaller and has to pump harder to supply the body with blood. "Until now we did not know if this was permanent or amenable to improvement.

Now, for the first time, we have shown how to make preterm hearts function as well as their peers. No drugs were required - just a 14-week exercise programme," said co-principal investigator.

The study enrolled 14 participants aged between 18-29 years, of whom eight were born very preterm and six acted as controls.

Gene therapy first to halt most common cause of blindness

Researchers claim to have carried out the world's first gene therapy operation to halt age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of untreatable blindness in the developed world.

Dry AMD is a slow deterioration of the cells of the macula.

It affects the central part of a patient's vision with gaps or 'smudges', making everyday activities like reading and recognising faces difficult.

If successful, the treatment could have a beneficial impact of patients' quality of life and their ability to remain independent.

"A genetic treatment administered early on to preserve the vision in patients who would otherwise lose their sight would be a tremendous breakthrough and certainly something I hope to see in the near future," said a Prof.

The first person to undergo the procedure was  a lady, said  the Prof., who carried out the procedure.

Like many people with AMD,she has the condition in both eyes, but it is more advanced in her left eye.

As is typical with this condition, the central vision in her left eye has deteriorated and is very hazy, although her peripheral vision is better.

The operation involves detaching the retina and injecting a solution containing a virus underneath.

The virus contains a modified DNA sequence, which infects cells, called the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), and corrects a genetic defect that causes AMD.

Ideally if successful, gene therapy would only need to be performed once, as the effects are thought to be long-lasting.

A key factor in AMD is the complement system, a system of proteins in our immune system that fights bacteria.

In macular degeneration, these proteins are over-active and start to attack the retinal cells, in a similar way to how they would attack bacteria.

"We are harnessing the power of the virus, a naturally occurring organism, to deliver the DNA into the patient's cells," the Prof. said.

"When the virus opens up inside the retinal cell it releases the DNA of the gene we have cloned, and the cell starts making a protein that we think can modify the disease, correcting the imbalance of the inflammation caused by the complement system," he said.

"The idea of this gene therapy is to 'deactivate' the complement system, but at a very specific point at the back of the eye, so the patient would otherwise be unaffected by it, and we hope that in future it will slow down the progression of macular degeneration," he said .

"We have a better understanding now on the relationship between the complement system and the AMD disease which lead us to the discovery that restoring the balance of a hyperactive complement system could be a potential therapeutic approach in dry AMD," he said.

The aim of the therapy is to halt the progress of the condition and preserve what vision patients have remaining.

It is hoped that gene therapy can be used in the future on patients with early AMD and so halt the disease before their vision has started to deteriorate.
