You Won't Get the Vitamin D You Need If You Suffer From.

For those of us who live in North America, there is a very good chance that we don't get all the Vitamin D we need. In fact, about 42% of American adults are deficient in this nutrient. Though other studies suggest that the number is actually closer to 75%. Being deficient in vitamin D is associated with a number of health concerns including risk for Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease.

It has also been found that if you have been diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer, your chances of survival may be lower than someone with normal levels of vitamin D. This may sound alarming, though it shouldn't come as a surprise. After all, vitamin D isn't found in too many foods - with the exception of salmon and fortified milk and yogurt. The only other way to get the nutrient, is to expose your bear skin to the sun. But if you work indoors all day, this is highly unlikely.

The best way to discover whether you are deficient in vitamin D is to take a blood test. Your levels should be between 45 to 50 µg/mL. This is something you may want to consider if you form part of these groups:

1. You are over 55 vitamin D deficiency
vitamin D deficiency
Of course, aging does have its perks: you are smarter, more confident and may be enjoying a leisurely life of retirement. Nevertheless, there are some downside. As we age, we tend to become less mobile, making it difficult to spend time outdoors, which would result in getting less vitamin D. In addition, ageing skin cannot synthesize vitamin D as efficiently. According to a 2007 Canadian study, about 50% of older American adults with hip fractures were found to have low levels of vitamin D in their blood. So, you're likely falling short on the nutrient unless you are taking a daily supplement.

2. You work in an office
vitamin D deficiency
Working a 9 to 5 job would mean that you don't get much sun. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), people with occupations that limit sun exposure are unlikely to obtain adequate vitamin D from sunlight. This makes supplementation and a smart diet key to staying healthy.

3. You have dark skin
vitamin D deficiency
Reports continue to show lower levels of vitamin D in those that identify themselves as black in comparison to those who identify themselves as white. This is because darker skin makes it more challenging for the body to produce vitamin D from sunlight, according to experts from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine's Foods and Nutrition Board. If you're darker skinned, you should rely on dietary sources of the nutrient, rather than sunlight to reach your daily vitamin D mark.

4. You suffer from inflammatory bowel disease
vitamin D deficiency
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, this means its absorption depends on the gut's ability to take in fat. Fat malabsorption is associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) - this includes conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. In fact, it has been shown that up to 70% of people with IBD have insufficient vitamin D levels, according to a Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology report. If you suffer from IBD, speak to your doctor and check whether you are getting enough vitamin D.

5. You have a high body fat percentage
vitamin D deficiency
If your body mass index (BMI) is over 30 or you have a high body fat percentage, it may be more challenging for vitamin D to circulate throughout your body, the NIH reports. Nevertheless, this doesn't mean that you will always be deficient. Be sure to speak to your doctor and find out just how much vitamin D you will need.

6. You are taking certain medications
vitamin D deficiency
We do need certain medications to keep our health on track, however, corticosteroid medications such as prednisone, as well as weight-loss drugs like orlistat, and the cholesterol-lowering drug cholestyramine can impair vitamin D metabolism. If you take any one of these drugs, be sure to check in with your doctor to find out the best way for you to get the right dose.

7. You suffer from depression
vitamin D deficiency
Did you know that people with low levels of vitamin D in their blood are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression, than those with higher levels? Medical experts aren't sure why this is the case, however one hypothesis is that the vitamin may alter hormones and areas of the brain that affect and regulate mood.

8. You suffer from chronic headaches
vitamin D deficiency
If you suffer from regular headaches, low blood levels of vitamin D may be to blame, according to a 2017 study of 2,600 men. Study participants with the lowest vitamin D levels had a twofold risk of chronic headaches compared to study participants with the highest levels. The specific link between headaches and vitamin D remains unclear, researchers believe the nutrient may help combat the inflammation that causes migraines and headaches.

8 Essential Oils for Treating Headaches

Your day is going along as usual, work, running errands, and suddenly you feel that oppressive and familiar feeling seeping through - a headache. Over 50% of people today suffer from some kind of pain that does not go away quickly and often causes them to reach out for painkillers to get rid of this negative feeling which affects both our mood and our functioning.

If you are among the people who suffer from headaches regularly or even occasionally and don’t want to be dependent on chemically filled drugs every time one hits you, you can use these following 8 essential oils to treat the problem in a natural, simple and pleasant way.

1. Tension Headache

Tension headaches are among the most common headaches. They are hard on all those who experience them and are known to cause a decrease in mood and in one’s ability to perform basic functions. To solve this problem, add 10 drops of mint oil into 28 ml (about 1 ⅙ cup) of a carrier oil, such as jojoba or coconut, mix well and massage the neck and shoulders with the oil. Thanks to mint’s research-proven soothing effects, you can get rid of the pain and continue your day without problems.

2. Stress Headache

The stress we feel has a direct effect on our overall wellbeing and often causes terrible headaches that cause a feeling of paralysis and inability to perform various tasks. These annoying headaches can be eliminated by using fragrant oils, such as frankincense, lavender, citrus or neroli oils, which can work miraculously.

You can use these oils in a number of ways, such as putting 2 drops on a tissue and sniffing it, using a diffuser or rubbing it into your hands with a carrier oil, like jojoba. Smelling the fragrance for a few minutes will help to relieve the pain.

3. Migraines

Migraines tend to attack people without warning, usually on one side of the head, and they cause the senses to blur because of their intensity. These severe pains and their accompanying symptoms can be eliminated with lavender oil, which, apart from its wonderful fragrance, helps calm the mind, regulates levels of serotonin and improves the quality of sleep.

To take advantage of lavender’s benefits and get rid of migraines, take in its intoxicating aroma straight from the bottle. In addition, you can mix 1 drop of oil into an odorless facial cream, and massage the jaw, temples, and neck to relieve the pain.

 4. Hormonal headache

Hormonal pain, which primarily affects premenstrual women, can be quite difficult for those who experience them. These sensations can be dissipated with essential geranium oil that affects hormonal glands and helps regulate the levels of estrogen hormones in our body. You can add 5-8 drops of this wonderful oil to a bath to enjoy its beneficial effects or mix a drop of it along with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil and massage the stomach with it.

5. Dehydration Headache

With today's hectic lifestyle, many of us have days when we forget to do the small stuff, like drinking enough water. As a result, headaches caused by dehydration form, but happily they can be treated naturally. Drinking water will quench your thirst, but to get rid of the headaches caused by dehydration, you should mix 2 cups of cold water with 1-2 drops of mint, orange or mandarin oil. After that, soak a piece of cloth or a small towel in the mixture, squeeze the excess water and put the compress on your forehead while you rest.

6. Sinusitis Headache

If you have regular sinusitis or colds/flu that cause your nose to clog, Melissa oil can make you feel great. This oil helps calm the brain, as well as relieves headaches that result from the accumulation of phlegm in the throat, nose, and sinuses. You can smell the fragrant Melissa oil for a few minutes to enjoy its effects, or drip a few drops of it into the diffuser and let the steam do its job.

7. Chronic headache

Some people suffer from headaches on an almost daily basis because of the use of various medications or other causes of the unpleasant phenomenon. These pains can be relieved with chamomile oil that has especially calming effects on the body and mind, as well as on chronic headaches that usually last for several days. Adding 4 drops of chamomile oil to a bowl of hot water and inhaling its steam can do wonders with chronic headaches, and using it in a bath is good for those whose headache lasts several days at a time.

8. Undefined headache

If you don’t suffer from one of the headaches listed above, but rather are attacked by an ordinary run of a mill headache, you can use rosemary, mint, lavender or a mix of them to help make the pain better. Just place 1 drop from each of these oils in a diffuser or mix 3 drops of the desired oils with 10ml of carrier oil and smell the fragrance for a few minutes to relieve the pain.

8 Warning Signs of a Blood Clot.

Blood clotting is a normal process that the human body carries out in order to stop external bleeding. However, sometimes blood clots happen when they're not meant to, such as when it's still within your veins. When this occurs, blood clotting can become life-threatening. Internal clotting can be a cause of heart attacks, strokes, as well as other serious medical conditions. Fortunately, there are 8 common ways to notice if you're suffering from a blood clot:
1. Swelling in One Limb
One serious type of blood clot is deep vein thrombosis (DVT). When DVT occurs, oxygen is prevented from reaching your vital organs. This results in poor blood circulation, which ends up causing swelling. If one or more of your limbs is inexplicably swollen, it would be best to consult your doctor.
2. Leg Pain or Tenderness
People suffering from DVT also commonly experience leg pain or tenderness. In addition to making the limbs swell, DVT may also cause the legs to ache, be sore to the touch, or to cramp up.
3. Chest Pain and Heavy Breathing
Chest pain should never be ignored, and neither should heavy breathing. If both of these symptoms are experienced simultaneously, experts say that you could be suffering from a blood clot in the lungs. Such a clot can quickly turn fatal, so should you experience these symptoms, then stop whatever you're doing, and seek medical attention right away.
4. Shortness of Breath
Much like with heavy breathing, shortness of breath is never a symptom you should ignore. If you notice that you're finding it hard to breathe, have a racing heart, feel a fluttering sensation in your chest, or experience any dizziness, then you may be suffering from a clot in the lungs. These symptoms, particularly when experienced simultaneously, warrant immediate medical attention.
5. A Random Cough Without a Cold
If you aren't ill but are coughing for seemingly no reason, then look out for other potential signs of a blood clot. These include chest pain, shortness of breath, and a noticeably increased heart rate.
6. Red Streaks Along Your Veins
If you notice red streaks on your skin that run down much of the length of your veins, then you should contact your doctor immediately. While blood clots typically cause bruising, streaking is a sign of a more severe and potentially life-threatening concern. These streaks will also make your skin feel a lot warmer to the touch, which is another way of identifying a clot.
7. Severe, Chronic Headaches
If you are continually experiencing very painful headaches, whilst also having trouble speaking or seeing, then this may indicate a blood clot in your brain. Needless to say, this is extremely serious, and you should seek medical assistance immediately.
8. Vomiting or Diarrhea
Severe diarrhea and/or vomiting is never normal under any circumstances. However, if these symptoms keep persisting, then you should contact a medical professional, as they could indicate a blood clot in the abdominal region.
