Can cervical cancer be cured?

What causes cervical cancer?

Also known as cervical cancer, cervical cancer is caused by persistent infection with some type of human papillomavirus – the human papillomavirus, called a neoplasm. It is sexually transmitted and can cause damage to the vagina, cervix, penis, and anus. In some cases, cellular changes occur that can develop into cancer.

These changes are easily detected on preventive examination – Also known as a Pap smear – it can be cured in most cases. for this reason, It is important to carry out regular preventive examinations.

paying off:

Cervical cancer is a slowly developing disease and may not have symptoms at an early stage. In more advanced cases, it can progress to intermittent or post-coital vaginal bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge and abdominal pain associated with urinary or intestinal diseases.

Is there a cure?

The American Cancer Society (ACS .)) reports that the overall five-year survival rate for cervical cancer is 66%. This number jumps to 92% when cancer is detected in its early stages. Treatment becomes more complex when the cancer is more advanced. Depending on the stage of the disease, a person may need surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or a combination of treatments.

protection

The main form of prevention is the HPV vaccine, available for girls aged 9 to 14 and for boys aged 11 to 14, in all family health units, where they are able to prevent 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of cervical cancers. Genital warts.

Another way to avoid the disease is to reduce the risk of infection with HPV, which occurs through sexual contact, while using a condom during intercourse. In addition, a preventive examination should be periodically performed by all women after the onset of sexual life, as it is able to detect early precancerous changes that, if treated, are cured in almost all cases, and do not develop into cancer.

Cervical cancer is 2nd most diagnosed cancer in India

Cervical cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in India, according to Dr D. Leela, Gynaecology Oncologist of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCH&RC) at Aganampudi in Visakhapatnam. She was speaking after screening mother-daughter pairs at Visakha Vimala Vidyalayam at Pedagantyada on Friday.

She said a mother’s awareness about symptoms and risk factors for cancer has a large impact on the daughter’s knowledge and attitude. As a cancer prevention measure, mother and adolescent daughter pairs are selected as sample cases, because they are the target population at risk of carcinoma cervix.
Mothers aged 30 years and above are screened for breast and cervical cancer. Daughters, aged between 10–14 years, are given two doses of HPV vaccination at an interval of six months while those above 15 years are given three doses at 0, 2 and 6 months interval to protect them against HPV infection, thereby preventing cervical cancer, Dr Leela explained.

Dr D. Raghunatha Rao, director of HBCH&RC, said in a bid to prevent incidence of cervical cancer, the hospital has adopted remote villages like Appapuram and Dhana-nipeta in Srikakulam district for complete screening of all women and vaccination of all girls against HPV virus, wh-ich causes the cancer. Till now, they screened over 100 pairs of mother-daughter.

‘Secret handshake’ detected between sperm and uterus

A team of researchers has discovered the making of a “secret handshake” between sperm and the cells lining the uterus that finally let one sperm out of nearly 200 million to make it through and fertilise a single egg, say researchers.

Uterine cells express a receptor that recognizes a glycan molecule on the surface of sperm cells.

It’s possible that this interaction may adjust the female’s immune response and help sperm make it through the leukocytic reaction, said the researchers. The leukocytic reaction is not well understood.

What we do know, explained molecular anthropologist  is that “after crossing the cervix, millions of sperm that arrive in the uterus are faced by a barrage of macrophages and neutrophils”.

This attack by the innate immune system kills a majority of the sperm cells in semen, winnowing hundreds of millions of sperm down to just a few hundred that enter the fallopian tubes.

The defensive response may be beneficial in preventing polyspermy, when an egg is fertilized by more than one sperm and cannot develop.

“It’s somewhat embarrassing how little we can say about what this [interaction] means,” said  a researcher.

Reproduction, he said, “is a very, very delicate tug-of-war at many levels. The fact that there is (also) this immune game going on is completely fascinating.”
